Question code- 641 Subject name-Manufacturing Technology
PART-A
1. What are the ingredients of moulding sand?
a) Sand
b) Binder
c) Additives
d) water
2. What is green sand?
Moulding sand with moisture is called green sand. it has 80%silica sand,10% to 20% clay,
5 to 10% water and some additives
3. Define spot welding.
Spot welding is one kind of resistance welding.
Spot welding is used to join over lapping sheets or plates of metal at small areas
4. What are the uses of forging?
The uses of forging processes are that, although the metal piece has to be heated to the correct forging
temperature before shaping, less metal will be used than if the shape were machined from a solid block of
metal
5. Define forgeability.
Forgability may be defined as the tolerance of a metal or alloy for deformation without failure, regardless
of forging-pressure requirement
6. What is counter sinking?
Counter sinking is the process of producing a conical enlargement at the end of a hole. This is done to
seat the counter sink heats of the screws and rivets
7. Specify a planer.
Planning is one of the basic operations performed for machining large flat surfaces. These surfaces may
be horizontal, vertical or inclined
8. Draw and write the parts of gas welding flame.
a) Neutral flame
b) Oxidizing flame
c) Carburizing flame
PART-B
9. Write a note on split pattern.
Split patterns are for making symmetrical shaped castings.cylinders.spindles, valve bodies, bearings and
pulleys are some examples of castings made by the use of split pattern.if the pattern is made in three parts,
the pattern is called three piece split pattern
10. Describe about tumbling.
This method is used for removing the sand and other impurities from the surface of small castings. many
castings can be cleaned at a time. The castings are loaded into a barrel. sharp cornered small pieces of
white iron are also loaded. the barrel is rotated slowly slowly around a horizontal axis
11. Write about gas welding.
In gas welding a gas flame is used for melting the edges of work pieces to the joined.gas welding is a
process of joining metals by the heat of the flame formed when oxygen burns with another gas (acetylene)
In this method, welding is done by using filler rod without applying pressure
12. Describe thermit welding.
Thermit welding processes involves quickly creating hot molten in the prefabricated moulds or reaction
chambers
The essential reaction is an exothermic reaction between metallic, oxides and aluminium
13. Write about rolling.
Roll forging is the process of production of discrete pieces of lengths of varying cross section by rollers.
Roll forging may be used to make reductions in the cross section and distribution of the metal of a billet,
thus saving considerable work in the forging hammer or press.
14. Describe about batch type furnaces.
A box furnace is used for heating small and medium size stock. It may also be employed
for heating large heavy ingots for forging in presses.
Box furnaces are available in many designs differing from one another in the location of their charging
doors, their firing devices and the methods used for discharging the products of combustion.
15. Write about the types of shaper operations.
The different operations that a shaper can perform are
1. Machining horizontal and vertical surface
2. Machining vertical surface
3. Machining angular surface
4. Cutting of grooves, slots and keyways
5. Machining splines or cutting gears and
6. Machining irregular surface
16. Write about apron mechanism.
* When the spindle gear rotates, the lead screw and feed rod will rotate through tumbler gears.
* The rotation of lead screw is transmitted to worm wheel through gears A, B, C and D.
* As the splined shaft (S) with the worm wheel rotates, gears F and C will be always rotating.
* The feed check knob (E) can be positioned as push in, neutral and pull out positions.
* When the feed check knob (E) is in neutral position, cross feed and longitudinal feed can be given
manually by rotating the hand wheel.
*Thread cutting can also be done by engaging the half nut lever.

(b) Explain about electron beam welding.
19 (a) Define hot working and cold working processes. Compare them.
(or)
(b) Explain about hydraulic press in detail.
20. (a) Explain about lathe parts and its function.
(or)
(b) Explain about radial type drilling machine.
21.(a) Explain about the quick return mechanism of a shaper machine with diagram.
