Read the following passage and answer the questions given below:-

In the poorer parts of New York, there was a colony where many struggling

artists lived, among them were Sue and Joanna. They had come to New York from

different parts of the United States. When they met, they found that they shared

the same interests, and so became friends. Together they set up a joint ‘studio’,

and tried to earn a living through art.

Joanna was small, thin and not very strong. After spending few months in

New York, she became ill with pneumonia. In those days, it was not easy to cure

pneumonia patients. Though Sue looked after her well, Joanna or Johnsy as she

was called, showed no signs of improvement.

One day, the doctor told Sue that Johnsy had one chance in ten. “And that

chance is for her to want to live,” he said. “Your little lady has made up her mind

that she’s not going to get well.” He told Sue that medicines alone did not help if

the patient did not wish to live.

That day, Johnsy just lay in bed without making any sound or movement.

First, Sue thought that she had fallen asleep but then she noticed that Johnsy was

looking out of the window and was counting something again and again in a very

low voice – almost a whisper.

II. UNSEEN PROSE PASSAGE: [9]

Read the given passage and answer the following questions:-

In a small village in Holland, a young boy taught the world about the rewards of

unselfish service. Because the entire village revolved around the fishing industry, a

volunteer rescue team was needed in case of emergency.

One night the winds raged, the clouds burst and a gale storm capsized a fishing

boat at sea. Stranded, and in trouble, the crew sent out the signal. The captain of the

rescue rowboat team sounded the alarm and the villagers assembled in the town

square overlooking the bay. While the team launched their row boat and fought their

way through the wild waves, the villagers waited restlessly on the beach, holding

lanterns to light the way back.

An hour later, the rescue boat reappeared and falling exhausted on the sand,

the volunteers reported that they had to leave one man behind. Even one more

passenger would have capsized the rescue boat and all would have capsized the

rescue boat and all would have been lost.

Frantically the captain called for another volunteer team to go after the lone

survivor. Sixteen year old Hans stepped forward. His mother grabbed his arm,

pleading, ‘Please don’t go. Your father died in a shipwreck ten years ago and your

older brother Paul has been lost at sea for three weeks. Hans, you are all I have left.’



Hans replied, “Mother I have to go. What if everyone said “I can’t go, let

someone else do it?” Mother, this time I have to do my duty. When the call for service

comes, we all need to take our turn and do our part.”

Cook’s answer was to lock herself in her room.

It was William who discovered first that it was tea-time and there was no

tea. At first he felt slightly upset. Then he thought of the larder and his spirits

rose.

George drank a whole jar of cream with great gusto, William and

mother, looked up to William’s window and caught sight of William’s untidy

head.
