>n my way home from school one day, 1 saw a student from my class walking ahead

of me. ;is name was en. ;e was one of those students who never mi2ed around and

was always being teased for his Dnerdy- appearance. 1t looked like he had emptied his

locker and was carrying all his books home. 1 thought to myself, Dhy would anyone

bring home all his books on a #ridayE ;e must really be a nerd.-

As 1 continued walking, 1 saw a few students deliberately running towards him."hey knocked him over and sent his books scattering on the muddy ground. ;is

spectacles went flying, and when he looked up 1 saw this terrible sadness in his eyes.

*y heart went out to him. +o, 1 went over to him and as he crawled around looking

for his glasses, 1 saw a tear in his eye.

As 1 handed him his spectacles, 1 said, D"hose guys are jerks. 8et me help you.-

;e looked at me and said, D;ey thanksF- "here was a big smile on his face.

1t was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude. 1 helped him pick up his

books, and asked him where he lived. As it turned out, he lived near me. e talked

all the way home, and 1 carried his books. ;e turned out to be a nice guy. e hung

out all weekend and the more 1 got to know en, the more 1 liked him.

*onday morning came, and there was en with the huge stack of books again. 1

stopped him and said, DAre you planning to build some serious muscles by lugging

this pile of books every dayE- ;e just laughed and handed me half the books.

>ver the ne2t four years, en and 1 became best friends. hen we finished

school, we both went on to different universities. hen en completed his medical

studies, he invited me for his graduation. ;e had been selected to give a speech on

behalf of the students and he wanted me to be present.

really found himself after high school. ;e seemed more confident and actually

looked good in glasses. And judging by the people around him, he had become one

of the most popular guys on campus.As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began. D@raduation is a time

to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years = your parents,

your teachers, your siblings, but mostly your friends. 1 am here to tell all of you that

being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give them. 1 am going to tell you a

story.-

1 just looked at my friend with incredulity as he told the story of the first day we
