COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING KIDANGOORSeries Test August 2015For Third Semester Electrical&Electronics EngineeringFluid MechanicsMaximum Marks: 50Duration: 2 hoursPart A (Answer All Questions) 4 X 5 Marks = 20 Marks

1) Explain any 4 properties of fluids.

2) Briefly explain each of the following and indicate them on a Pressure scale.a) Atmospheric pressureb) Gauge pressurec) Vacuum pressured) Absolute pressure

3).State and Prove Pascals Law.

4) Calculate the specific weight, density and specific gravity of 1 litre of a liquid which weighs 7N.

Part B (Answer All) 2 X 15 Marks = 30 Marks

1) A plate of area 0.6 sq m is sliding down an inclined plane at an angle of 30 degrees to the horizontal with a velocity of 0.36 m/s. There is an oil film of thickness 1.8 mm between the plane and the plate. Find the viscosity of fluid if the weight of the plate is 280 N.(Hint: take component of weight along the plate as Wsin30.)- (Refer Figure 1)

2) A U tube manometer is used to measure the pressure of oil of specific gravity 0.85 flowing in a pipeline. Its left end is connected to pipe and the right limb is open to the atmosphere. The centre of the pipe is 100 mm below the level of mercury (specific gravity = 13.6) in the right limb. If the difference of mercury level in the two limbs is 160 mm, determine the absolute pressure of oil in the pipe(Refer Figure 2)(Specific weight w= 9.81kN/m3. Atmospheric pressure = 100 kPa or kN/m2)
