Question tags
Question tags are short questions at the end of sentence.
They are mainly used in speech when we want to:
confirm that something is true or not
to encourage a reply from the person we are speaking to.
Modal verbs
The verbs can, could, will, would, should, may, might, must, ought and shall are verbs which 'help' other verbs to express a meaning.
Modal verbs are NEVER used with other auxiliary
Modal verbs NEVER change form: you can never add an "-s" or "-ed", for example.
Modal verbs are NEVER followed by to, with the exception of ought to.
If in the main clause there is an auxiliary or modal verb:
In the negative form if the main clause is affirmative
Ex:
she has paid the bill, hasn't she?
We have already seen that tv programme, haven't we?
In the affirmative form if the main clause is negative
Ex:
We didn't go to the mall last Saturday, did we?
You won't come back late, will you?
If in the main clause there isn't an auxiliary or a modal verb, we use do/does or did
Ex
She still lives with her parents, doesn't she?
