Questionnaire Results
• In my questionnaire, I asked a combination of quantitative and qualitative questions. Quantitative questions provide the audience with a selection of answers to choose from. This is beneficial as it creates numerical data as I can view how many people chose each answer and create percentages from this. Qualitative data requires the audience to create their own personal answers and this gives me in depth detail and more variety as there are no limitations to the answers and answers can be more specific to the audience.
• I asked 10 males and 10 females, all aged 16-24, to fill out my questionnaire. I chose to question both male and female as I want my magazine to appeal to both genders therefore I felt it was important to ensure I research both views in order to use appropriate magazine conventions in my magazine. The age range I selected is also convenient as age 16-24 is the target audience for my magazine therefore by asking a variety of ages 16-24 gave me varied opinions according to the different ages. I made sure that the people I gave my questionnaire to share an interest in indie rock music to make the outcome beneficial as if I questioned people who enjoy R&B music; a pop magazine has different conventions to indie rock magazines.

NME Spin Kerrang Q The RollingStone
From these results, NME was the most popular answer overall therefore in my magazine I will include similar content and magazine conventions in order to attract my audience. Kerrang was the most popular answer for the male gender and I believe that this is due to the magazine appearing heavier and more manly. I will ensure that my magazine mirrors some of the heavier themed content in order to retain a male audience as well as females.

From these results, I have concluded that the majority of the people I questioned, both male and female, said that they attend concerts when they can afford to. I assume this is because this age group are still students therefore may struggle to fund festivals/concerts on a regular basis due to them being so expensive now-a-days. Therefore in order to appeal to my audience I will include special offers and details regarding concerts and festivals and also offer competitions to give them the chance to win festival/concert tickets. This will encourage them to purchase the magazine.

The results clearly show that the most popular answer was £1-2.99. This price range shows that the audience would be unwilling to pay high prices for magazines however would still purchase magazines up to £2.99 showing that they still request magazines of a good quality. This gives me guidance as to an appropriate price to charge for my magazine.

These results show that the most popular answer was to release a magazine fortnightly. Presumably this is because my target audience may not be able to afford a weekly magazine and a monthly magazine may not be a good frequency for exclusivity as the music industry is constantly releasing information therefore I have chosen to release my magazine fortnightly based on these results.
Question 5 – Why would you say you read music magazines?
• This question asked the readers what motivates them to purchase and read magazines. Answers varied from general interest into the music genre and artists within that genre to others saying they only read them on the rare occasion mainly for exclusive interviews. A few of the people questioned also said that sometimes they buy the music magazine for the free items inside such as posters and for any special offers on concert tickets etc. This information tells me that my target audience are keen to stay updated on current artists and music therefore I will include a charts playlist feature in my magazine and also that they enjoy reading interviews therefore I will feature exclusive interviews in my magazine as well. These observations reflect the age group as music is a very popular conversation topic for 16-24 year olds therefore I assume they want to keep updated on new and exclusive information.
Question 6 - What genre of music would you say you listen to the most?
• As I questioned people specific to my music genre, the answers were as followed:
-Indie
-Indie folk
-Indie punk
-Rock
-Metal
-Alternative rock
This gives me an insight to the sorts of bands/artists I should include in my magazine, that fall under these genres.
Question 7 - What bands/artists do you enjoy listening to or reading about the most?
• A wide range of artists came from this question, including:
-Arctic Monkeys
-1975’s
-Mumford and Sons
-Vampire Weekend
-Jake Bugg
-Kate Nash
-The Courteneers
-Kings of Leon
-The Kooks
This tells me the sort of artists my target audience are interested in therefore I will ensure that the images I take appear similar to these bands iconic looks in order to appeal to the audiences interests.
Question 8 - What do you prefer to see in a music magazine?
• This question focus’ on the audiences opinions as to what magazine
conventions appeal to them. Popular answers were interviews and special offers on concert tickets. Again this comes back to the age group as they show interest into exclusive gossip and are most probably students therefore special offers on concerts would appeal to them due to concert tickets being so expensive. Other answers included reviews on current artists songs and albums and I assume this is because usually people like to see what others thought of an album before actually purchasing it themselves. In addition to these answers, many people said they like to see images as apposed to loads of texts therefore I will try to include an even balance of images and texts to make my magazine appear aesthetically pleasing. This feedback has helped me to decide which conventions are essential to include in my own magazine.
