I made a questionnaire in order to gather data on the type of magazine I would make. I asked various questions ranging from personal details of the participant, to their preferred genre of music in order to get their opinions.

I asked them music – related questions to see which type of magazine I would make and also asked questions regarding the magazine itself such as pricing etc. to ensure that the magazine would have the best opportunity to sell.

I asked 12 people to take the questionnaire and have collated their results together in a spreadsheet using Microsoft Excel. From their results I have made tables and charts in order to see the results clearly and be able to analyse them as well as comparing and contrasting the different answers. This will help decide upon important factors when producing my music magazine.

I found that giving out the questionnaires was extremely beneficial as I was able to obtain the views of the potential buyers of my magazine and also from knowing their opinions, I’ll be able to make it to the highest standard to suit their preferences.

Age AnalysisAs the graph shows, I asked an equal number of participants aged 16 and aged 17. I pre-planned before to use participants of these ages as they’re my target audience who the magazine is going to try to appeal to.

I also wanted to see whether participants of similar ages think a similar way on issues raised in my questionnaire. Using this method of choosing people of specific ages benefitted me a lot as if all or the vast majority of participants didn’t like one possible aspect of my magazine, then I would know to remove it in order to maximise the chance of my target audience buying the magazine.

Gender Analysis

Male

Female

As the graph shows, I asked an equal number of males and females – 6 of each gender. This was because I wanted to compare the results of males and females and see if a particular gender felt certain way about one particular topic.

I also wanted to get a diverse selection of people that represent each gender equally. The graph below shows the proportion of males and females.

Question: What is your preferred music genre out of the following?

I asked this question to find out the target audience’s favourite genre of music in order to find out what music genre my magazine should be based on.

I provided 9 options in which participants can choose as well as the additional ‘Other’ category to get any alternate genres that are not mentioned.

Question: How often would you like a music magazine to be released?

I asked this question in order to find out how often a new issue of a music magazine the reader would like to be released. This is a key question as it could affect the sales of the magazine because if it is not released enough, then the readers would be kept waiting for the next issue. However, if it is released too many times then the readers could feel that they’re paying for the same updates just in a different issue.

Price AnalysisQuestion: What is the maximum price you’d be willing to pay for a music magazine?

This was a key question in my questionnaire as the price is a vital factor in whether a customer buys an item. I had 3 options of different price ranges and wanted to see what the majority of participants chose to make sure I chose the right option to suit my target audience.

When posing the question; I asked for the maximum price they’d be willing to pay as opposed to the minimum because when choosing the price options for the minimum amounts, the options could hinder the results as I could be selling myself and the magazine short of a regular music magazine price. This was a better method as I got to see where the cut-off point was for the pricing of my magazine as it takes into account the participants price range.

Title AnalysisQuestion: For a hip-hop magazine, which title do you prefer?

I asked this question because I wanted to gain the opinion of the participant on the title of the magazine. This is because having a catchy title could contribute the person in buying it.

I gave 6 title options with the intention of having the title for a hip-hop magazine as this was the music genre I probably knew most about and also it was the preferred genre of most of my participants also. The results of the preferred title can be seen below:

Font AnalysisQuestion: Which font would suit the magazine title best?

This was an important question to ask as the font used in a magazine is a key tool in the overall look and presentation of it. Font is a key tool which needs to be of a high standard as it needs to be clear, yet interesting in order for the person to be able to read it as well as be interested and not bored whist reading. The font should also be consistent in a magazine as the fonts that are used on the front cover should also be used in the Table of Contents to achieve a magazine of professional, high-looking quality.

I provided 6 options from which the participants could choose from. Because I knew there was a high possibility that I’d end up making a music magazine, I chose certain fonts that were relatively similar which I thought went well with the hip-hop genre.

Front Cover Features AnalysisQuestion: Out of the following, which features would most attract you to buy a music

magazine if it was displayed on the front cover?

This question is a fundamental factor for the research of the production of my magazine. Not only is it important as it gets the reader’s opinion, but it also decides what appears on the front cover. This is extremely important because if a potential buyer of the magazine glances at the front cover and does not like what they see, this may dissuade them from buying it. It could be argued that the features on the front cover are the deciding factor in which a person chooses to buy the magazine are not, so asking this question is an imperative part in my research.

From being a reader of magazines myself, I provided 5 options of features that normally appear in magazines for my participants to choose from.

Music Awards Show AnalysisQuestion: What is your favourite music awards show?

I asked this question to find out some more music-related information about the

participant. Music Awards shows are considered a big even to music fans as it

shows their favourite artists getting recognition fro the work they’ve done.

I was thinking that a possible feature of my music magazine was to make a

competition and offer tickets to a music awards show as a prize. In order to do

this, I had to find out the popular award shows that my target audience like in

order to make it a good prize worth winning.

Music Method AnalysisQuestion: What method do you listen to your music with most?

This question helped to discover more information about the participant. However, it

is also very important because a possible magazine feature could be to offer a prize

draw to the first 50 buyers of the magazine to win a music-related item.

Therefore, I needed to carry out research to find out which music-related item

people would be most interested in winning as it could possibly enhance the person

into buying the magazine.

Because the results show a unanimous choice, it is now clear which music device

would be offer through the prize draw.
