OFFICERS & DIRECTORS

President: Erika Lindemann The now Associate Director of Wilderness Youth Project,Erika has been involved with the Coalition since 2001. A founding member of Bici Centro, she is shaping us into an efficient, effective and high profile non-profit organization advocating for winnable campaigns to craft a bikable, livable SB.

Treasurer: Dave BourgeoisA proud co-founder of Bici Centro, Dave believes that more cyclists with a stronger common voice will create better conditions for all. He cycles for health, environmental benefit, fun and adventure around town and the globe. His skills are helping us outreach that vision throughout this fair county.

Vice President: Howard BoothNot afraid to get down to “business” he’s actively

sharing his experiences, commitment, energy andmad management skills to connect some of our

diverse communities in the SB biking scene. Howard bikes to connect with old and new

friends alike, as transportation, and fun!

Secretary (Scribe): Erik Wright½ of the WheelHouse Bikes founding duo, Erik would

like to see our fair city become totally immersed in cycling and eventually get to a point where the bike permeates SB

culture. We will no longer view those who ride and those who don't in separate categories, but rather see the bike

as a piece of everyday life.

Expand conventional Bici Centro open shop to4 days per week

By the end of 2011, the newly elected SB City Council willdemonstrate, by their public statements, an understanding of cycling as a legitimate and growing form of transportation in the county.

FROM YOURnotesnotesEXECUTIVEDIRECTOR> > > > > M o v i n g F o r w a r d The 'bicycling as a legitimate form of transportation' movement has come a long way. We all beamed as Obama's Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood (the one republican in his cabinet) announced a sea change in the federal approach to bicycling and walking as healthy, active transportation. Bike Share programs have outdone their "Yellow Bike' predecessors with international acclaim. Bicycling and Walking trips have more then doubled in the last twenty years, as overall bicyclist fatalities have decreased. Cities like Portland, NY, San Francisco, and even L.A. are breaking new ground in fundamentally bike-friendly facilities. Your bicycle coalition has changed a lot over the last few years as well. With the merge of SB Bike and Bici Centro, we are reaching more cyclists more meaningfully then ever before. Please read through our program overviews to see how. With bicycling heroes such as Wilson Hubbell, Robert Bernstein, and Don Lubach, and others, our President Emeritus Ralph Fertig has stewarded the coalition for over twenty years to help make Santa Barbara county one of the best places to bicycle. We've built upon that base of volunteerism and community involvement to move forward into the next stage of bicycle advocacy. As staff for over three years now, and the Executive Director for slightly over a year. In that time our board members have stepped up over and above the call of duty to lead various efforts, committies, and transform this shoe-string nearly all-volunteer effort into a higher-capacity organization with concrete vision, goals and strategies. I am so proud to say that every one of our board members volunteers, contributes financially, and cares tremendously about the future of bicycling in our county. And from here? We are growing bicycling in Santa Barbara county. Our offerings aim to be universally accessible by south coast residents, and yes, we are making strong in-roads into programming in the north county as well. We are hosting events like those of CycleMAYnia that share not the smugness of cycling (come on, we've all got a little of that), but the exhilaration of it. We also are fully plugged in to public policy and advocacy to make cycling safe and viable throughout the county, using best practices from around the world. What all of us, racers, weekend adventurers, tourers, utilitarian commuters, hipster track standers, and cruiser types all inherently connect with is the feeling of being alive that a bicycle, human-scale movement, sparks. It is that joy that is our mission to share. All the Best, Ed France

Dear Wet Willy,

I use a rearview mirror when I ride and find it invaluable. I’ve noticed that you don’t use a rearview mirror and I was wondering why. Thanks,

Perplexed--Dear Perplexed,

Wet Willy does ride with a 9mm rearview mirror that is attached to the inside of his glasses. It works as well as (or better than) mirrors that protrude from helmets, glasses or handlebars. Basically, you can’t tell that I’m riding with a mirror because it’s located where you can’t see it. In case you’re interested, here it is: It’s called the Viewpoint Mirror and you can find out more at: www.cycleaware.com. I’ve found a rearview mirror to be essential when riding because it allows me to quickly glance at overtaking traffic several times a minute (or more) without having to turn my head and shoulders to look to the rear. Not having to turn to look to the rear also allows me to spend more time focused on what’s happening infront of me. Being able to stay abreast of the road ahead and behind simultaneously is important, particularly in urban environments where lanepositioning or turning movements can be frequent and occur in close proximity to other road users.

Bottom line: Rearview mirrors are important because you can glance at that mirror a lot easier and a lot more often than you can turn your head and shoulders. However, this does NOT mean that cyclists wearing mirrors can forget about turning to look to the rear. Rear view mirrors can – and do - provide a good look at specific areas behind you, but sometimes there may be a need to see the bigger picture.

FUTURE YOUTH PROGRAMS:

SBJH, La Colina, GVJH: April 2011 www.bicicentro.org/youth

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Our Youth Earn-A-Bike programs (called Pedal Power) are pedaling fasterthan ever. This Spring, all Junior High students at 3 different schools are given the opportunity to learn basic bike mechanics and practice safe riding skills on the road while getting fit and having fun with new friends. At the end of 6 weeks, they can earn a refurbished bike, a helmet, a lock and lights. Thank you to the Santa Barbara Foundation for supporting Pedal Power and all the dedicated volunteers who make our youth programs such a great success!

Need to clear out your garage this month? Donating used bikes and parts to Bici Centro is a great way to support our work.

For the whole month of May, Traffic Solutions is bringing you the BIKE CHALLENGE as part of CycleMAYnia. As with our challenges every year, co-workers and friends can participate by forming a team of five and registering at www.TrafficSolutions.info. You will earn points and prizes for riding your bike everywhere, any day in May! There are awesome prizes awaiting you, courtesy of the 2011 CycleMAYnia sponsors, which include our local bike shops, VeloPro, FasTrack, Cranky’s, Bicycle Bob’s and WheelHouse, as well as Horny Toad Active Wear, Nau, Lezyne, and Thule.

So, how does it work? The Bike Challenge is a friendly competition with five-member teams making round-trips by bike instead of by car. Team members log each day they bike on their Commute Calendar. This year teams who attend CycleMAYnia events earn extra points. At the end of the competition, the 1st place team and other top teams win a variety of prizes. Businesses can also compete for prizes and glory.

The Bike Challenge is open to anyone who lives or works in Santa Barbara County, as well as local businesses. Log-in to your existing Traffic Solutions account (or create one) at www.TrafficSolutions.info and register your team.
