QUICK ... SIMPLE ... VALID ...URINARY TESTING METHODS
By George J. Goodheart, D. C., 542 Michigan Theatre Bldg, Detroit, Michigan
Many tests have been proposed andused for urine diagnosis and analysis.Kits of unusual reagents have been assembled and offered to the profession. All the tests on urine are useful in excluding gross pathology but of whatvalue in treating a patient is a urineanalysis report which is negative for albumin - sugar, blood, pus cells - andpossibly indican, bile and casts?
A negative respond is an assuranceof some sort, not always valid, of freedom from gross pathology - but it isof little value in treatment and maintenance of a particular patient.
Tests which do have a bio-chemicalsignificance and which materially helpin the care of patients directly aresometimes little known. An evaluation0,£ the specific gravity, total calcium, chlorides, phosphates, judgment as toliver function and vitamin C level, ispossible and simply done in a matterof minutes without expensive kits orequipment by use of simple - yet fullyauthentic and standardized tests onurine samples. These tests are regularlyperformed in our office - take littletime - require little equipment andyield much positive information in thecare and management of patients habitsand diet as well as specific indicationsfor treatment.
Urine specific gravity is usuallychecked - if within normal limits forgotten - or disregarded - this simpletest is an aid if interpreted properly toliver - not only kidney function. Generally speaking 1.018, not 1.021 or1.022 is normal, if specific gravity is aslow as 1.010, ,three factors may bepresent:
1. Kidney elimination is poor.2. Faulty assimilation.3. Mineral intake is low.The most common t;ause of low
specific gravity is a sluggish or torpidliver - body wastes do not eliminatewhen liver fails to function properly. Some low gravities are the result of alow food intake of individuals tryingto control hypothyroidism by diet.
Only a very few low specific gravities are caused by kidney disfunction*Applied Nutrition - Hawkins. Thesefacts justify the thought that lowspecific gravity of urine specimens in-
dicate poor liver and thyroid functionrather than a possible kidney difficulty.Treatment suggestions therefore, wouldbe to stimulate liver and thyroid function. Since the liver is supplied roughlyby 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, spinal sympatheticsand vagal parasympathetic; inhibitoryadjusting in parasympathetic regionsupper cervical and lower lumbars andsacrum would be a good approach use the specific gravity as an indication

of treatment liver and thyroid technicsand support would also be indicated. There is biochemical application oftreatment based on a simple specificgravity test. What could be easier?
The well known Sulkowitch reagentfor estimation on urinary calcium isavailable through a California supplier"uri-blood-cal" or it can be made up
as follows: 2.5 gm oxalic acid - 2.5gm ammonium oxalate - 5 cc glacialacetic acid. Dilute up to 150 cc withdistilled water. Add equal parts of thissolution and morning prebreakfasturine and observe for about 20 secondsfor cloudiness and flocculation. A hazycloudiness is the general rule in mostpatients since most patients have a disordered Ca-P ratio. This indicatesheavy amounts of urinary calcium an absolutely clear solution indicateslow urinary calcium. This test taktsabout 40 seconds, can be performedwhile patient is dressing, and yields useful information. Unless the patient is
ingesting a high calcium diet whichis well nigh impossible with our superrefined foods, or supplementing withcalcium in some forms, the heavy calcium indicates, generally speaking, lossof calcium via urinary route - foodshigh in vitamin D will help to bind calcium to blood stream - foods high invitamin F transport calcium from bloodsteam to tissues. Foods high in A andC help keep it there. Many factors influence calcium in the body rather thanreglect any - here they all are - someare useful, some are not.
I. Amount and character of calciumin diet.
2. The hydrochloric acid levelspecial attention is directed here to thefact that if HCL level is good it doesn'tseem to make much difference whatform of calcium is ingested if not the lactate or the gluconate is best try to raise the HCL by adjusting this is also best! HCL support may beneeded.
3. The amount of phosphorus assimilated a high protein and cereal-nuts,chocolate, and bean diet is high in phosphorus and causes an increased loss ofcalcium in urine.
4. The amount of potassium, assimilated potassium has a high electrochemical activity and can displace Ca andincrease it in urine. Modern diet trendsmake it difficult to keep a level of potassium rich foods such as juices fruit, vegetables, wheat bran, softdrinks, low enough in diet.
5. The amount of magnesium in diet, magnesium displaces calcium like potassium but with exception of milk ofmagnesia addicts it is not essential toconsider.
6. Basal metabolic rate - high thyroids lose Ca easily in urine - lowthyroids do not assimilate it, thereforeboth cause high urine calcium.
7. Vitamin D and bile both act alikeon calcium, increase its excretion in theurine but - increase its assimilationwith an edge toward assimilation.
8. Rate of growth is self-explanatory.A decrease during this period would beexplainable this way.
9. The level of iron in the body. A

high urin.: calcium with poor assimilation is often associated with a low ironor hemoglobin level.
10. The activity of parathyroids.Calcium levels are raised in both bloodand urine levels by parathyroid increasein activity but is followed later by adecrease.
II. Intestinal rates too fast will decrease calcium in urine and blood.
So find out what calcium level is,apply yardstick of above items andgen.:rally speaking, an increa e in Vitamin F, liver function, HCL or calciumintake will change the urinary calciumincredibly quick. Here again adjusting for better liver function is important - loosening of neck musculatureand lymphatics promote parathyroid activity. Certainly enough gastric disord
ers due to low HCL have re ponded toadjustings in the upper dorsal region(even though this is a sympathetic area)to warrant careful adjusting, not overlystimulating. Apply logic in analysis use adjustment as indicated, and watchthe calcium level change - a simpletest - 40 seconds - a few minutesthought and common sense in treatment gives a bi0chemical control.
A simple test for chloride level andadrenal function. Also important in thecontrol of hypertension, in the treatment of hypertension and in generaluse is the Koenigsberg Test. Two solutions are used - Potassium chromate10% - Silver Nitrate 0.74%.
Take ten drops of morning urine addone drop of potassium chromate shake well - add drop by drop silvernitrate until a brick red color develops- a low sodium diet gives about eightdrops to the end point. A regular dietbased on about 1000 specimens testedruns 23-35 drops.
The urine chlorides is a good indexof total intake and can be used in allbut a few liver and kidney and adrenalpathologies. A low level with hypertension would warrant an increase intable salt, a high level with hypertensionwould warrant a decrease in salt andhigh sodium foods. A high level of fatsin the diet show an increase in urinechlorides. as also with potassium. Sincea good HCL level favors better calciumlevels and since many patients sufferfrom calcium losses and hypertensionand low gastric acidi"ty causing gastricsymptoms, two problems can be solvedby gelling the chlorides normaJ-
Urinary phosphates can be detectedmicroscopically or by boiling urine ifa couldiness develops following boilingwhich disappears on addition of acid.
these are phosphates. Another methodis the ph determination with PHdrionpaper or with Squibbs nitrazine PHtesting strip - simple alld quick.USUally the greater the acidity thegreater the phosphorus. The samefactors controlling calcium and control phosphorus since in the mainit is excreted in combination withcalcium or with potassium. So. therefore, these factors are involved.
I. The level of phosphorus in die!.2. The level of fally unsaturates.3. The level of HCL.4. The level of bile and vitamin D.5. Pancreatic function.6. Vitamin 8 - vitamin 8 stim
ulates the pancreas and aids phosphorusassimilation.
7. Presence of infections - theseseem to increase the phosphate level
tremendously in our experience, slowing up almost always, and changingwith the subsidence of the infection how many of you recall seeing a urineloaded with some deposit in infectionsthen clearing - again phosphates. Therefore, to sum up modify diet toprovide adequate amounts of phosphorus - generally present in meat, fish, and eggs - supply foods in high"F" and adjust to get better HCL andliver function as before and try carefulamounts of high 8 foods or concentrates to improve phosphorus assimilation.
The following chart, if copied andkept near urinalysis table, will materi<Jlly aid in dietary changes to be madefrom the tests run.

The Ames Company of Elkhart, Indiana. produces excellent enzyme reactant strips which will quickly givepH, albumin. sugar, blood, and forthose interested in infant care, the presence or absence of phenylajanine in theurine. These enzyme coated strips aremarketed as combi-stix. (albumin, sugar, and pH.) Hemi-stix's give blood inurine and other solutions; Pheni-stix'sgive phenyl-alanine, and keto-stix's giveacetone. A multiple dipping of combistix's, keto-stix's, hemi-stix's gives a yesor no answer to sugar, albumin, blood.acetone, and pH levels within 15seconds after dipping, with no otherpreparation. What could be simpler orquicker for detecting gross urinal pathology. Hemicombistix now are available.
Vitamin C levels can be estimated bythe usc of dichlor phenol, indo phenylindicator material using equal quantities of urine and indicator material. This indicator in tablet form can besecured from Good Health SupplyCompany, 16 Gothic Avenue, Toronto,Canada. The Sulkowitch agent for calciuol is also available from~ this source.
