Quick Tips1, 2, & 3: Engine Information I would like to order the correct parts for rebuilding my engine. How do I determine the cubic inch displacement (CID) of my flathead 6? Installation of, and Cylinder Head Tightening Sequence When installing a cylinder head, always use a new gasket. Make sure the cylinder head and cylinder block are free from carbon and dirt. Inspect your bolts and studs carefully and replace any that are corroded, stretched, thread damaged or stressed in any way. Don’t forget to use sealant on all head bolts and studs before installation. We recommend plumber’s pipe joint compound. Tighten the cylinder head cap screws in sequence as shown in the illustration (right), by drawing all cap screws and nuts down evenly. Repeat this operation until all screws and nuts are tight. Use a torque wrench and tighten cap screws to 65-70 foot-pounds and stud nuts to 52-57 foot-pounds. Just a note on machine work when either rebuilding or per- forming a valve job: Make sure you check cylinder head for flat- ness. Have the head planed if necessary. Quick Tips1, 2, & 3: Engine Information I would like to order the correct parts for rebuilding my engine.How do I determine the cubic inch displacement (CID) of my flathead 6?

Installation of, and Cylinder Head Tightening Sequence When installing a cylinder head, always use a new gasket. Make sure the cylinder head and cylinder block are free from carbon and dirt. Inspect your bolts and studs carefully and replace any that are corroded, stretched, thread damaged or stressed in any way. Don’t forget to use sealant on all head bolts and studs before installation. We recommend plumber’s pipe joint compound.

Tighten the cylinder head cap screws in sequence as shown in the illustration (right), by drawing all cap screws and nuts down evenly. Repeat this operation until all screws and nuts are tight. Use a torque wrench and tighten cap screws to 65-70 foot-pounds and stud nuts to 52-57 foot-pounds.

Quick Tip 4: EliminatingMetal Debris in Engine Oil When I change my oil I fi nd tiny bits of metal fl akes. Is there anything I can do to solve this problem besides

rebuilding the engine? If your engine is a bit tired, try attaching an old speaker magnet tothe side of your oil pan. This will trap metallic particles and keep them from cir-culating in the oil, thus reducing excessive wear on engine bearings, as well as preventing the clogging of oil passages. Of course ultimately the engine will have to be replaced or rebuilt.

Quick Tip 5: Replacing an Oil Pump Any special procedures required for replacing my oil pump? It’s very important to prime the oil pump prior to installation. Before you start the engine, remove the oil pump and completely submerge oil pump in clean oil. Turn the shaft by hand until there are no more

air bubbles. Reinstall the pump with a new gasket. Fill the engine with fresh oil. Disconnect the coil wire and crank the engine until you have pressure on the gauge. Reinstall the coil wire and start the engine.
