Welcome to Iowa Baseball

Student-athletes throughout the country each year face the difÞ cult task of selecting a University in which to pursue their college degree while reaching their full potential academically and athletically.

Selecting a University and baseball program that is the right Þ t for you is a very important decision. This decision is one that will have a great impact on both the near future as well as the many years to follow your collegiate experience and baseball career.

As you begin to compare all of your options, I strongly encourage you to consider The University of Iowa and our baseball program. Many of the same qualities which distinguish Iowas academic reputation are the foundation we are building within the baseball program a commitment to excel-lence, tradition of success, strong community support and Þ rst class facilities.

Iowa is an outstanding university with a worldwide reputation of academic excellence. The university features faculty and staff members who are committed to making your experience as a student-ath-lete a positive experience academically, not to mention Iowa City is a classic college town that prides itself on the success of the university in every regard.

We are also looking forward to regaining the past success that Iowa Baseball has had in winning seven Big Ten Championships, qualifying for three NCAA Tournaments and one appearance in the College Word Series. Our Coaching staff is looking forward to taking The University of Iowa Base-ball program to new heights. We believe that we have an opportunity to become one of the Þ nest baseball programs in the nation, while helping to produce graduates who are prepared for success-ful careers.

The athletic department at the University of Iowa has built its reputation on the sound foundation of academic, athletic and personal integrity. These qualities are present at the very top in University President, Dr. David Skorton; Athletic Director, Bob Bowlsby; and Associate Athletic Director Fred Mims (Baseball Administrator) and are embraced by each member of our coaching and administra-tive staff.

It is our hope that you will continue to consider The University of Iowa as a place for your future. Our program offers incredible academic opportunities combined with a Big Ten athletic experience that is unparalleled. The University of Iowa and the Iowa City Community will provide all the necessary ingredients to make your academic and athletic experiences as rewarding as possible.

We hope you will share in the excitement about The University of Iowa and our program. Its great to be a Hawkeye!

University of Iowa baseball coach Jack Dahm heads into his sec-ond season with the Hawkeyes with a seasoned squad and sense of optimism.

We are really looking forward to our second season here, Dahm said. Weve made a lot of strides since last year. We have so much more competition within our program and a much better work ethic. I truly feel that we are headed in the right direction and that we will continue to build the foundation of a successful program.

PITCHINGThe pitching staff will have a host of new faces after the Hawkeyes lost three of their top four starters from a year ago to graduation. The biggest shoes to Þ ll will be those left by Þ rst team all-Big Ten selection Nathan Johnson, who was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies after his senior season.

There is no way to replace a pitcher the caliber of Nathan Johnson, Dahm said. He was a real luxury last year, knowing that every Friday he was going to go out there and give us a chance to win.

While the Hawkeyes will enter the season without a clear-cut ace on the staff, the coaches are excited about the potential of this group of arms from top to bottom. Seven hurlers will come into the season bat-tling for starts.

We need guys to step up and establish themselves early in the season, Dahm said. There is a lot of competition that we didnt have last year.

The top question for Dahm and pitching coach Nick Zumsande is where they are going to use talented and versatile southpaw Tim Gudex. The junior served as the Hawkeye closer last season, but has the tools to be an effective starter in the Big Ten.

Gudex isnt overpowering, but he is a great competitor and always

gives you a chance to win in whatever situation you put him in, Dahm said. He has three quality pitches he can go to, and could be very valuable in a number of roles as a lefthander.

With a strong showing in the fall, sophomore Casey ORourke has made a strong case for a spot at the top of the rotation. The Wil-

liamsburg, IA, native appeared in 11 games last year and made Þ ve starts in mid-week games.

Casey has established himself as someone who should be considered as a weekend starter for us, Dahm said. He likes to have the ball in his hand in big games, which is exactly what we look for in a starter. Two other pitchers that had solid falls and should be in the mix as start-ers are sophomore Ryan Dupic and junior Austin Seward. Dupic made eight starts last season as a fresh-man, while Seward made 13, posting a 5.21 ERA.

The coaching staff will also have a lot of options with their newcomers, led by 6-5 junior Luke OLaughlin, who comes from Triton Junior College. David Conroy and Travis Sweet are also talented freshmen who could battle for starts.

In the Hawkeye bullpen, Scott Brune and Kevin Sunderman will be looked

at in short relief. Sunderman, who split time between third base and the mound last year, will become a full-time pitcher this year.

Both Brune and Sunderman have stepped up during the offsea-son, Dahm said. They give us good options in short relief, as both can close the door.

In long relief, Aaron Reasland has experience and should provide solid innings for the Hawkeyes. Cory Dawson, Brian Furlong and Andrew Sparks will also be counted on in long relief.

The status of Jeff Maitland, who is still recovering from the elbow injury that caused him to miss all of last season, is uncertain for this

season. Iowa will be without the services of Danny Bales and Josh Wheatly, who will miss the season with arm injuries.

INFIELDThe inÞ eld should be a strength of the 2005 Hawkeye team after returning quite a bit of experience from last season. With a young pitching staff, strong inÞ eld play will be paramount for the Hawk-eyes.

We will need to be one of the top defensive teams in the league to be successful, because we dont have a lot of strikeout pitchers, Dahm said. We will have to be able to catch the ball well, and I have conÞ dence that we will. Were trying to build the program around pitching and defense.

The double play combination of shortstop Andy Lytle and Jason White returns for another season and could end the year as one of the best combos in the conference. Lytle hit .305 last year and has all the tools to succeed in the Big Ten.

Lytle is an extremely talented offensive and defensive player, Dahm said. I believe he can develop into one of the better inÞ eld-ers in the Big Ten. He has an above average arm, speed, and he is a good hitter. He was also one of our most consistent players last year.

At second base, White is an explosive athlete that gained valuable experience last year and pushed Lytle for the starting shortstop spot in the fall.

Senior Andy Cox will split time at both corner inÞ eld spots, and Coach Dahm likes his work ethic and defensive abilities at both third base and Þ rst base.

Luis Andrulonis will see action at the hot corner after an injury plagued season last year in which he started 32 games and hit .264.

They will be challenged by freshmen Travis Sweet and Kody Mc-Manis. Sweet will also see action on the mound this season, while McManis can play second base as well.

Splitting time with Cox at Þ rst base will be freshman Dusty Napoleon. Brian Burmester and Skylar Moss should also challenge for playing time.

Neal Coleman, T.J. Cataldo, Justin Petty and Luke Sassano will pro-vide quality depth in the inÞ eld.

CATCHERSenior Kris Welker returns after a solid season behind the dish for the Hawkeyes in which he hit .284 and was second on the team with 50 hits and 32 RBIs.

Welker is the leader of the team, Dahm said. He is a competitive kid who takes charge of things on the Þ eld with his Þ ery personality. He runs the staff really well and is a good middle of the order hitter.

A pair of talented youngsters will provide depth behind the plate in Dusty Napoleon and Ben Geelan.

We are not only excited about having Welker back, but we are really excited about the future of the position with Dusty and Ben, Dahm said. Both of these players have a chance to be special.

The Hawkeyes also have Tom Moreland, Chase Metzger and John Suvada ready to step up and play.

OUTFIELDThe Hawkeye outÞ eld will be anchored by all-Big Ten rightÞ elder Nate Yoho, who returns after a breakout year in 2004. Yoho led the Hawkeyes in hits (63), doubles (15), home runs (4) and RBIs (48).

Yoho is the leader in the outÞ eld, Dahm said. He is a talented Þ ve-tool player who continues to improve. He has gotten more consistent throughout his career and should have a great senior season.

In centerÞ eld, L.J. Mims returns after a productive offseason that should set the stage for successful junior season.

L.J. had one of the best falls of anyone on our team, Dahm said. Hes worked very hard and has much more conÞ dence. He was a bit overpowered last year, but he gained strength in the offseason and is ready to dive into the leadoff spot.

In leftÞ eld, the Hawkeyes have plenty of options, led by Nate Price and Jeff Boomer Engel.

Price is a 6-2 lefty with speed that Dahm says reminds him of Steve Finley. He can play center or left, along with being a designated hitter.

Engel is coming off a strong fall and can also DH when not playing the Þ eld.

Boomer is a big strong kid who brings a real physical presence to the lineup, Dahm said. Hes even stronger than he was last year, and should be a good, solid player for us.

Jesse Brownell and Mike Mogard will also challege for starts in the outÞ eld. Dahm says Brownell is the best defensive outÞ elder on the team, while Mogard is the hardest worker of the Hawkeyes.

Matt Wooldrick, Skylar Moss, Marcus Thompson and Ryan Consi-dine will add depth to the outÞ eld and should challenge for playing time throughout the year.

We are going to play a lot of guys early, and whoever steps up will play during the season, Dahm said. Its nice to have options like that, but we do need guys to step up and establish themselves. SCHEDULEThe Hawkeyes will play a demanding schedule that starts with their season opening tournament in Alabama, a three-game series with 2003 College World Series participant Southwest Missouri State and a spring trip to Florida. Iowa will face the top teams in the Mid-west, including Wichita State, Nebraska, and the annual Corridor Classic with Northern Iowa.

We have one of the toughest schedules an Iowa team has had in a while, Dahm said. Were going to be challenged early, but that will prepare us for the Big Ten season. We will play all the NCAA Qualifying teams from the Midwest, and it will be good to see how we stack up against them.

Jack Dahm enters his second season as the head coach of the University of Iowa baseball team.

In his Þ rst year, Coach Dahm began building the foundation of what he expects to be a top-notch ballclub. The Hawkeyes went 20-35 with a very challenging schedule, and Þ nished eighth in the Big Ten with a 12-20 record.

Dahm helped guide both Nathan Johnson and Nate Yoho to All-Big Ten honors. Johnson was named to the Þ rst team and Yoho earned his way onto the second team. Iowa also had eight play-ers on the Academic All-Big Ten team in Dahms Þ rst year.

Before coming to Iowa City, Dahm spent 18 years as a member of the Creighton Bluejays baseball program. He left the Bluejays as the winningest coach in school history, having compiled 283 wins against 276 losses in 10 seasons as a head coach.

Building the Foundation is the theme that Coach Dahm has stressed since he was hired in July of 2003. Dahms plan for Hawkeye baseball is to build the program from the ground up.

In order to build a consistent program we must have a solid foun-dation and that starts with quality student-athletes who are willing to make personal sacriÞ ces on and off the Þ eld, said Dahm. We must also develop a level of trust and belief in each other and in the program. If we can build that solid foundation the success on the Þ eld will start to take care of itself.

That foundation is not just on the Þ eld, but off it as well. Players have been busy giving back to the community by helping raise money for breast cancer and helping the Iowa Childrens Museum at the Crystal Ball dinner. Dahm also arranged the annual Lead-Off Dinner, which featured Cubs General Manager Jim Hendry as a speaker in 2005.

Other new and exciting events were added to the schedule. The I-Cubs/Hawkeye Classic at Sec Taylor Stadium in Des Moines and an exhibition game against the Triple A Iowa Cubs was a rousing success, as was the Þ rst annual Corridor Classic against intra-state rival, Northern Iowa. The Classic, which is held at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids, helped raise over $85,000 for the American Diabetes Association with a Kiss A Pig contest held before the game. It was the third largest ADA fundraiser in Iowa history.

Dahm gained praise nationally for his Þ rst recruiting class, after it was ranked in the top-50, and perhaps the top-25, by Jerry Ford, the National Director of Perfect Game U.S.A. Collegiate Base-ball named it the top-ranked class in the Big Ten and the No. 44 class nationally. Dahm and the Hawkeyes made their mark on the in-state recruiting trail when they inked six of the top eight high school prospects in the state of Iowa, which included the top four pitching prospects.

In year two on the recruiting trail, Dahm and his staff continued its success by signing some of the top players in the Midwest.

Dahm went to Creighton in 1986 to play under Hendry and spent four years as a student-athlete from 1986-89. In 1990, Dahm ac-cepted a position as a graduate assistant coach for Hendry and spent four years helping build Creighton into a Missouri Valley Conference power.

In 1991, Dahm was promoted to a full-time assistant as he helped the Bluejays reach the College World Series. That Creighton squad ended the season as the second-highest hitting club in the nation, batting .355 as a team. The teams 60 triples in 1991 led the nation and remain a school record.

In October of 1993, Dahm was hired as Creightons head coach, becoming the youngest head coach in Division I at the age of 25. For the next ten years, Þ ve of Dahms ten teams would Þ nish in the top three of the Missouri Valley Conference.

In 1999, Dahm earned his Þ rst of two Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year honors as the Bluejays advanced to the NCAA tournament for the Þ rst time in the Dahm era. Creighton posted 38 wins that season, the most since Dahms Þ rst year in 1994, before being eliminated from the South Bend Regional.

In 2000, Dahm guided the Bluejays to their second consecutive NCAA Regional appearance at the Arizona State regional in Tem-pe, AZ, after Þ nishing the season with a 38-23 record. During the season, Dahm led Creighton into the national spotlight as they peaked at No. 15 in the Collegiate Baseball poll and were ranked in the top 25 of the Baseball Weekly/ESPN Coaches Poll and Baseball America.

Dahm earned his second coach of the year honor in 2002 when the Bluejays Þ nished the season 30-24 against one of the nations toughest schedules. Victories over nationally ranked Nebraska, Notre Dame and Wichita State were overshadowed by the teams best-ever season in the Missouri Valley Conference. Despite hav-ing a lineup top-heavy with underclassmen, Creighton Þ nished second in MVC play with a 21-10 record.

A native of Morton Grove, IL, Dahm entered Creighton as a highly recruited inÞ elder in 1985 and left 18 years later as the all-time winningest coach in school history. As a player, Dahm shared the dugout with former Major Leaguers Mike Heathcott, Dax Jones, Scott Servais, Dan Smith and Scott Stahoviak. Eighteen of Dahms players have been selected in the Major League draft since 1994, four of which have played at the Major League level. Since 1994, Dahm has produced 16 Þ rst-team all-MVC players, seven freshman All-Americans and two All-Americans.

Besides being a student of the game on the Þ eld, Dahm was ac-tive in community service, fundraising and his teams have strived academically as well.

The Bluejays were actively involved in the community under Dahm, as they held various free baseball clinics, raised money for the Nebraska Childrens Home and were a part of Opera-tion Bluejay, a program that provided tutoring for young people in Omaha.

Dahm also played a large role in the planning, designing and fund raising for the $3.5 million Creighton Sports Complex. The Kitty Gaughan Pavilion baseball facility is one of the Þ nest indoor base-ball complexes in the country. It featured a state of the art hitting facility, locker rooms, Legends View Club and coaches ofÞ ces.

Dahms teams have not only had success on the Þ eld, but in the classroom as well. During his tenure at Creighton, Dahms play-ers were named to 32 spots on the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete teams, 10 Verizon Academic all-District honors and three Verizon Academic all-Americans. His teams also con-sistently Þ nished with G.P.As around 3.0.

Dahm has also been active in the advancement of college base-ball by being a member of the many national committees. He was a ten-year member on the College World Series Board of Direc-tors and served on the American Baseball Coaches Association Change of Season Committee. He was also a part of the NCAA Division I Regional Advisory Committee and was an onsite direc-tor of the NCAA Yes Baseball Clinic for 11 years.

As a speaker, Dahm has been the featured speaker at the Young Leaders Society of Johnson County, the United Way Board of Di-rectors in Iowa City and at numerous Rotorary Clubs, I-Club func-tions and baseball clinics throughout the Midwest.

The 38-year old Dahm and his wife, Lynn, have been married for 11 years. The couple has three children - sons Casey and Tyler and daughter Lyndsey.

Iowa made a great choice in hiring Jack Dahm to be its new baseball coach. I have admired him for many years as a tough competitor, an outstanding game coach and a great person. He competes hard on the Þ eld, but he always does so with a tremendous amount of class. We had many great games against his Creighton teams and I hope we will have the same in the future with his Iowa Hawkeyes. I have no doubt Jack will lead the Hawkeyes to the upper echelon of the Big Ten Conference in the near future.

Jack Dahm is a perfect Þ t for the future of the University of Iowa Baseball. He has a great understanding of the commitment it will take to have a winner in Iowa City. Jack possesses the work ethic as a coach and recruiter to make the Hawkeyes a consistent contender for the Big Ten title and NCAA Regionals.

Nick Zumsande enters his second season as Iowas pitching coach.

Last season, Zumsande guided Hawkeye hurler Nate Johnson to a fan-tastic season that saw him named Þ rst team all-Big Ten and drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies.

Zumsande was also a big factor in helping Iowa land the top-ranked recruiting class in the Big Ten during the coaching staffs Þ rst year of recruiting.

Prior to being named Iowas pitching coach in August of 2003, Zum-sande served as a pitching instructor at Indiana State University. Zum-sande joined the Sycamores in 2001 as the pitching instructor, recruiting coordinator and baseball camp director. In his second and Þ nal season with the Sycamores in 2003, Zumsande guided the Indiana State hurl-ers to a 36-21 record and a 4.15 earned run average, the second lowest team ERA in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Before arriving at Terre Haute, IN, Zumsande served one year as the pitching coach at Iowa State University. In his lone year at Iowa State, the Cyclones team earned run average lowered nearly two runs and led the team to its Þ rst Big 12 Tournament appearance in school his-tory. Zumsandes staff Þ nished the conference season with a 4.38 ERA, which was tied for fourth with Nebraska in the conference.

Zumsande held the head coachs position at Muscatine Community College before accepting the assistant position at his alma mater, Iowa State. Zumsande headed the Muscatine program from 1988-2000, re-cording 431 career victories against 195 losses, a .688 winning percent-age. The Indians Þ nished in the national polls six times in the 1990s under Zumsandes guidance. During that period, Zumsande earned NJCAA Region IX Coach of the Year honors in 1990, 1994 and 1999.

Over 50 of Zumsandes former MCC player were sent on to major four-year colleges and 30 former players signed professional baseball con-tracts.

A member of the American Baseball Coaches Association and Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association, Zumsande has twice guid-

ed his team to the NCJAA Division I World Series (1994 & 1999). In 1994, the Muscatine baseball program was awarded the Homa Thomas Team Sportsmanship Award by designated members of the media.

In the professional ranks, Zumsande spent the 1993 season working for Major League Baseball International in Northern Europe. While in Europe, he served as an ambassador as he promoted and instructed baseball for MLB.

Born July 17, 1961, Zumsande graduated from Iowa State in 1984 with a bachelors degree in Physical Education. He earned his masters de-gree in Athletic Administration from Northwest Missouri State in 1986.

Coach Zumsande is a proven winner that has had success ev-erywhere he has coached. He has developed outstanding pitch-ing staffs in the Big 12 and Missouri Valley Conferences and I believe he will do the same in the Big Ten. I enjoyed watching Nick work with and develop our pitching staff last year. He took a very inexperienced staff and taught them how to compete on a daily basis. Nick has the unique ability to teach not only the mechanics of pitching, but also the mental side. The one char-acteristic that has stuck out to me about his pitching staffs is that they will compete.

Ryan Brownlee enters his second season as the Iowa hitting, in-Þ eld instructor and recruiting coordinator.

In his Þ rst season as recruiting coordinator at Iowa, Brownlee inked one of the Þ nest classes the Hawkeyes have seen. The class was ranked No. 1 in the Big Ten by Collegiate Baseball. As the batting coach, Brownlee was also key in the success of Nate Yoho, who earned all-Big Ten honors for the Þ rst time last year.

Prior to joining the Iowa staff, Brownlee served as the inÞ eld/bas-erunning coach and assisted with hitting and recruiting at James Madison University for four years. Brownlee did a variety of game-day assignments during his tenure at JMU, including coaching Þ rst base, bench coach, inÞ eld shifts, defensive plays and opponents scouting reports. In back-to-back years (2001-02), Brownlee guided the Dukes to school record .967 and .968 Þ elding percent-ages. Also in 2002, the Dukes broke the school record for wins in a season with 43 and advanced to the NCAA Southeast Regional at Columbia, SC, after winning the Colonial Athletic Association crown.

Before joining the James Madison coaching staff, Brownlee served as an assistant coach under his father, James, at Evansville for

two seasons. While at Evansville, Brownlee was responsible for outÞ eld, catching and hitting instruction. Brownlee advanced to the Purple Aces coaching ranks after excelling as a player for four seasons. A four-year starter at second base, Brownlee earned all-MCC honors in 1994 and all-MVC accolades in 1996. He was also selected to the American Baseball Coaches Associa-tion all-Region squad. In 1997, Brownlee was tabbed a TPX pre-season third-team all-American and he received the University of Evansvilles William V. Slyker award for the most outstanding male athlete at the university.

Brownlee, a native of Evansville, graduated with a bachelors de-gree in psychology with a minor in biology in 1997. He received his Masters in athletic administration in 2002 from James Madi-son. He and his wife, Aimee, welcomed their Þ rst child, Jackson, on Dec. 31, 2002.

The Iowa baseball program has a long history of former athletes competing on the professional level. Over 100 Iowa players have been sent into the pro ranks. Recently, the Hawkeye baseball program has reached new heights by combining talented student-athletes with Þ rst class facilities and superior coaching.

In 2004, Þ rst team all-Big Ten pitcher Nate Johnson was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.

Two Hawkeyes prolonged their 2003 baseball seasons at the professional level. Junior Kyle Thousand surrendered his Þ nal year of eligibility to pursue a professional career with the Toronto Bluejays. The two-time all-Big Ten centerÞ elder was selected in the 26th round of Major League Baseballs amateur draft. Former Hawkeye MVP and right-handed pitcher Reed Pawelk signed a free-agent contract with the Florida Marlins following Iowas 2003 season.

Four Hawkeyes were drafted by the major leagues after the 1999 season. Pitcher, Wes Obermueller was drafted in the second round by the Kansas City Royals, second baseman Brian Mitchell went in the 40th round to the Toronto Blue Jays and pitcher, Matt Sawvell signed a pro contract with the New York Mets.

Obermueller started the 2002 season as a member of the Wichita Wranglers, a Double-A afÞ liate of the Kansas City Royals, before being promoted to the parent club and making his Major League debut September 20th, against the Cleveland Indians. In 2003, Obermueller was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers, where he won two games and struck out 34 hitters in 65.2 innings. Last season Obermueller went 6-8 with a 5.80 ERA in 118 innings pitched.

Signed by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, hurler Jim Magrane, set Iowas single season records for innings pitched (107.2) and strikeouts (110) during the 1999 season. He also tied a 63-year old school record with 17 strikeouts against Western Illinois. Magrane pitched a 9-3 complete game win over nationally ranked Miami (FL). Magrane is currently a member of the Durham Bulls, a Triple-A afÞ liate of the Devil Rays.

In 1998, Iowa inÞ elder, Nate Frese, was drafted in the 10th round by the Chicago Cubs. He currently serves as shortstop for the Iowa Cubs, a Triple-A afÞ liate of the Cubs.

In 1993 outÞ elder Bo Porter was drafted by the Chicago Cubs. During the 1999 season, Porter was brought up from the minors by the Cubs. Porter saw action in 24 games, while starting Þ ve in the outÞ eld. Porter was the opening day centerÞ elder for the Texas Rangers during the 2001 season.

OutÞ elder, Chris Hatcher was drafted following the 1990 season. He has been a member of many minor league organizations, compiling a .275 batting average in 953 games. During the 1998 season, Hatcher was a member of the Kansas City Royals, where he saw action in eight games.

Tim Costo was a Þ rst-round draft pick of the Cleveland Indians in 1990 before being traded to Cincinnati. He spent the 1995 season at the Indians AAA class Buffalo team, playing in 105 games. He was also a member of the St. Louis and Toronto organizations.

Cal Eldred was a Þ rst-round draft pick by Milwaukee in 1989 and remained there until he was traded to the White Sox in 2000. In 1994, he had the honor of being the opening day pitcher, and led the American League in starts (25). Eldred made a name for himself in 1992 by going 11-2 for Milwaukee, winning 10 straight decisions. In 1993 he led the American League in innings pitched (258). After a two-year stint on the Chicago south side, Eldred signed a free-agent contact with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2003. In 2004, he was a key part of the Cardinal team that advanced to the World Series.

Mike Boddicker, a native of Norway, Iowa earned all-Big Ten honors as a pitcher and inÞ elder during his campaign as a Hawkeye (1976-78). In 1983, he was named the American League Rookie of the Year. After pitching in the major leagues for 11 years, Boddicker retired in 1993. He played for the Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals.

Mike Boddicker Scholarship

Former Iowa standout Mike Boddicker, and his family, have established the Mike Boddicker Scholarship. The scholarship goes each year to a member of the Iowa baseball team who is in good academic standing and displays outstanding character and personality.

Boddicker, a native of Norway, Iowa earned all-Big Ten honors as a pitcher and inÞ elder during his campaign as a Hawkeye (1976-78). In 1983, he was named the American League Rookie of the Year. After pitching in the major leagues for 11 years, Boddicker retired in 1993. He played for the Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals.

The Mike Boddicker Scholarship was established in 1993. Pitcher Colin Mattiace was the Þ rst recipient and held the scholarship all four years of his Hawkeye career. InÞ elder Nate Frese received the scholarship in 1997 and 1998, Iowa City native Brian Mitchell won the scholarship in 1999, and the 2000 and 2001 scholarships were awarded to outÞ elder Andy Jansen, a Bancroft, Iowa native. Four-year starter Ian Mattiace received the scholarship in 2002 and former Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Reed Pawelk has beneÞ ted from the scholarship in 2003 and 2004. Kris Welker is the 2005 recipiant.

Senior Kris Welker is this seasons re-cipient of the Mike Boddicker Schol-arship.

Endowed Scholarships

Cal Eldred has lit up Hawkeye baseball once again. But this time, instead of employing his expert pitching, the major-league star and his wife, Christi, made a gift to fund the installation of lights at Iowas Duane Banks Field. The Cedar Rapids couple gave $245,000 for the installation of lights at the baseball Þ eld named after Cal Eldreds former coach.

The gift, the largest ever from a current professional athletes family to Iowa athletics, allowed the project to be completed in September 2001. The Hawkeyes won the Þ rst night game played at Banks Field April 10, 2002, against Northern Illinois, 11-9. The University of Iowa ofÞ cially dedicated the lights Saturday, April 13, 2002.

Iowa Athletic Director Bob Bowlsby hailed the Eldreds generosity, saying, Cal and Christis gift shows that once a Hawkeye, always a Hawkeye. Cal has been representing Iowa well for years, Þ rst with the Milwaukee Brewers, then with the Chicago White Sox and now with the St. Louis Cardinals, all the while making us all proud. But the fact that he and Christi have remained true to their Iowa roots in this very generous way makes us even prouder.

Former Iowa Baseball Coach Scott Broghamer noted that the Eldreds gift is another chapter in their long association with baseball in the state. I coached Cal when he played for Urbana High School in the mid-1980s, and he and Christi have been Hawkeye supporters for years, Broghamer said. This gift will make Iowas Þ eld one of the Þ nest anywhere. Were very excited and grateful.

The Eldreds cited their desire to give back to Iowa and to honor former Hawkeye coaches Banks and Broghamer-who they said are their good friends and longtime mentors-as reasons for making the gift. The gift was commemorated by a plaque at the Þ eld.

Cal Eldred, who grew up in Urbana and attended Iowa for three years before being drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in 1989, said, My experience at Iowa helped shape me as a player and as a person. And Coach Banks has stayed involved in my life and has always been there for me. I couldnt be happier about making this gift for Hawkeye baseball. I hope others will consider helping out however they can.

Why Iowa?

The main reason I chose Iowa was because I saw it was the best Þ t for me. Iowa has everything I feel I need to be successful both on the baseball Þ eld and out in the working world. I feel Iowa has prepared me for the things that I will encounter in my life. I not only feel I have matured as a baseball player, but as a person too.

The Iowa Baseball program is on the rise. Since the addition of the new coaching staff, which brought in a whole new outlook on Iowa baseball to a program that had been mediocre in the last several seasons, we have been working hard and starting to get a lot more competition in the program. Everyday in practice its a chance for you to try and earn a spot on the Þ eld. When you hear from the coaches that each practice is an evaluation it pushes you to bring out your best everyday otherwise someone else will take your spot. I believe this is only making us better and tougher. I feel we are starting a good foundation for a program that will soon be a contender year in and year out for the Big Ten Championship and the College World Series.

Scott BruneSophomorePeosta, IA

University of Iowa Baseball is headed toward great success in the future, because nothing in the program is taken for granted. The coaches and players come to work everyday focused on the task at hand. While there are high goals for the future of the pro-gram, these goals never serve as distractions from what needs to be accomplished that day.

The coaching staff has created an atmosphere within the pro-gram that makes you feel as though you are apart of a family. There is a genuine feeling that everyone in the program cares for everyone else and would do anything for anyone afÞ liated with the team.

Luis AndrulonisSeniorMiami Lakes, FL

I chose Iowa because the at-mosphere in the athletic de-partment as well as the com-munity are all for Hawkeye support and advancement. The people around Iowa have always given the impression that they are proud and hon-ored to be Hawkeyes, and care about being a part of the University.

L.J. MimsJuniorCedar Rapids, IA

I dont believe there has ever been a better time to become part of the baseball program at the University of Iowa. The coaches have had success at the collegiate level both as play-ers and coaches, and they understand what it takes to win. The players are continuing to improve on a daily basis and are beginning to understand what it takes to have success.

Everything the entire program is doing is improving it and moving things forward. It will only be a matter of time before the baseball program earns a Big Ten Championship and is mentioned among the other elite schools in the Midwest on a yearly basis.Ryan DupicSophomoreEmmetsburg, IA

Iowa City is a college town, and there are no professional sports so everyone around here loves the Hawkeyes. The University of Iowa has an attitude that is second to none in academics and athletics. This University is willing to do anything to help its students and athletes succeed. Boomer EngelSophomoreMinnetonka, MN

I choose Iowa because, being an Iowa City native, I knew what a great opportunity it was to be given a chance to attend the University of Iowa. The facilities are top of the line, and I wanted to surround myself in a winning environment.

The atmosphere at Iowa is incredible for a student-athlete. If you show the people in this city that you are a competitive team, they will come out and support you.

Matt WooldrikSophomoreIowa City, IA

Duane Ban

In the fall of 2001, the Iowa baseball Þ eld was re-named The Duane Banks Baseball Field in honor of the Hawkeyes former head coach. Banks, the winningest coach in Iowa history, served as Iowas head baseball coach from 1970-1997.

Banks Field was originally built in 1974. The 3,000-seat stadium has dimensions of 330 feet down the lines, 375 in the power alleys and 400 to centerÞ eld. As a whole, the complex is one of the top facilities in the Big Ten and the Midwest.

In 2002, former Hawkeye and current Major Leaguer Cal Eldred donated $245,000 to fund the installation of lights at Banks Field. It is the largest donation by a current professional athlete to Iowa Athletics.

The inÞ eld was re-designed following the 1999 season with a new playing surface and ten-foot fences were added to the outÞ eld. The Þ elds drainage system was also improved. Both bullpens were restructured and the hitters background was replaced. Located next to the Hawkeye bullpen are two Astro Turf batting cages.

The complex features locker rooms for both teams and umpires. In 1998, Iowas clubhouse was expanded, giving the Hawkeyes one of the best college baseball environments in the nation.

Prior to the 1996 season a Daktronics state-of-the-art scoreboard system was installed. In addition to providing spectators with pertinent game information, the system also has a marques that is capable of displaying player information.

A new press box was built in 1989 and renovated in 2002. It can accommodate several radio stations and up to 25 media members.

During inclement weather, the Hawkeyes can move to the Bubble, Iowas indoor facility located right next to Banks Field. The Bubble is a 120-yard expanse of state-of-the-art Prestige XT artiÞ cial surface that includes four full-size batting cages and Þ ve raised pitching mounds. The bubble gives the Hawkeyes a top-notch facility to train in year-round.

Home of the Hawkeyes - Duane Banks Field

Dedicated in 1998, the Pavillion at Banks Field is in memory of Diane Mitchell, mother of Hawkeye athletes David, Mark and Brian Mitchell, and wife of former football player Bob Mitch-ell. Diane died in an automobile accident en route to the 1996 Alamo Bowl. During her life, Diane never missed an inning or a down of her sons games and was always their biggest supporter. Her dedication to the Hawkeyes was surpassed only by her love for her family.

Academic Student Services

Since its inception in 1979, Athletics Student Services has evolved from a two-person, academic support service to a broad-based, nationally prominent student support services operation. Its purpose is to assist student athletes to become tomorrows leaders by offering academic and personal support services to assist them in making timely and satisfactory progress toward their degrees. Athletic Student Services focuses on four important areas academic counseling and monitoring, educational and support programs, retention programs and compliance services when working with student-athletes. Following are descriptions of some of the programs, services and opportunities available to student-athletes in those areas.

Athletics Learning Center The $4.6 million Russell A. and Ann Gerdin Athletics Learning Center opened in August of 2003 and gives all Iowa student-athletes a state of the art facility to help them with their educations. The Athletics Learning Center is a multi-level, 20,000 square foot facility which will provide a computer center, study areas, classes and meeting places for all Hawkeye student-athletes. The Learning Center will feature an auditorium that converts into two classrooms, separate study rooms for under and upper-class student-athletes that feature 28 study carrels, a computer lab, Þ ve tutorial rooms, the book loan repository, ofÞ ce space for Iowas Student Services staff and a display area to

recognize the academic accomplishments of Iowas student-athletes.

Academic Counseling and Monitoring Athletics coordinators work closely with student-athletes and their university-assigned advisors from the time they arrive on campus until the time they leave the University. Along with focusing on academic planning matters such as goal-setting, plans of study, choosing majors and degree requirements, athletics coordinators also help student-athletes

understand NCAA, Big Ten and University academic policies. They also solicit feedback from instructors on academic progress made by student-athletes.

Tutoring Tutoring is available free of charge to all student-athletes. Tutors, who are post-graduates and teachers, help with course content as well as study strategies and are available in virtually all general education program subjects.

The Russell A. and Ann Gerdin Athletics Learning Center is the headquarters for the University of Iowas Athletic Student Services.

The Russell A. and Ann Gerdin Athletics Learning Center has a large computer center for use by all Hawkeye athletes.

The Gerdin Learning Center is a great place to work on your academic goals. It is a quality learning environment with every-thing you need in order to make a smooth transition into being a student-athlete.

- Brian Burmester

Retention A full-time staff member directs the retention program, which identiÞ es student-athletes who may need tailored academic assistance and structure, and implements individualized learning plans to help them succeed. Such plans may include daily and weekly planning sessions with athletics coordinators and retention staff, tutoring, study groups, mainstreaming into on-campus services like the writing center, math labs and services for students with learning disabilities.

Transition Seminar All new student-athletes attend an eight-week transition seminar during the fall semester that is geared toward helping them make the transition from high school to college successfully. Seminar topics include time management skills, learning and study strategies, the culture and rules of the university, and life skills concerning alcohol and other substances, relationships and intimacy, diversity, tolerance, values and character.

CHAMPS/Life Skills Life skills programs are conducted throughout the year with and for student athletes on quality of life issues critical to personal growth, such as personal accountability, responsible use and nonuse of alcohol, diversity and gambling.

Career Guidance and Development Planning a meaningful career and a fulÞ lling life is an ongoing process of expanding and narrowing choices, beginning when student-athletes arrive on campus and continuing throughout their college career and lifetime. The professional staff works with other career development professionals on campus to offer individual consultation, career development seminars, workshops, referrals to other campus ofÞ ces and special events like the Senior Recognition Banquet for graduating student-athletes.

Minority Enrichment Program This program offers a culturally supportive environment in which minority student-athletes have the opportunity to develop friendships and a support network in the university. A core focus group of students and staff coordinate programs such as guest speakers, holiday celebrations, community service activities with the local neighborhood centers, events with Cultural Centers and networking with minority faculty, staff, professional and business leaders.

Compare the Numbers Iowas student-athletes have outperformed the Universitys entire student population each year since the NCAA started requiring a report of student-athlete graduation rates.

The Gerdin Athletic Learning Center has plenty of places for Hawkeyes to study.

Located near Hillcrest residence hall, the Russell A. and Ann Gerdin Athletics Learning Center is easily assessable to Hawkeye athletes.

The Gerdin Athletic Learning Center offers our student-athletes at The University of Iowa the most modern, state of the art aca-demic facilities at their disposal. It is located in the heart of cam-pus right across from the Hillcrest Dorm. When you combine our facilities with the outstanding leadership of our Academic Student Services Staff, our student-athletes are provided the direction and assistance needed to be very successful in their academic pursuits.

- Head Coach Jack Dahm

The Gerdin Learning Center is the ultimate academic tool for student-athletes. The academic assistance you receive is invaluable. The support staff, facilities and learning environment allows students great opportunities to reach and exceed their academic potential while competing as NCAA Division I athletes.

-Luis Andrulonis

On April 21, 2004, the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa ushered in a new era of Iowa collegiate baseball with the inaugural I-380 Corridor Classic. The game, played at Memorial Stadium - home of the Class A Cedar Rapids Kernels, will pit the two intrastate rivals against each other annually.

The game is a real event for eastern Iowa baseball fans, fea-turing spirit squads from both teams, Þ reworks and the Kiss a pig/Ride a hog contest where fans were able to see local celeb-rities lip-lock with a pig while getting a chance to win an Harley Davidson motorcycle. The Kiss a pig/Ride a hog promotion was sponsored by the American Diabetes Association.

The Panthers won the Þ rst Corridor Classic, 8-3, in front of 2,098 fans.

The First Corridor Classic was very successful and we are looking forward to making it even bigger and better. I be-lieve that the Corridor Classic will develop into one of the premier college baseball games in the country. This event would not have been possible without the cooperation and hard work of KCRG TV-9, the Cedar Rapids Kernels, the American Diabetes Association of Iowa and the marketing departments at Northern Iowa and Iowa.

On April 7, 2004, the Hawkeyes ventured into the world of profes-sional baseball when they took on the Chicago Cubs Class AAA afÞ liate Iowa Cubs in an exhibition game at Principal Park in Des Moines, IA.

In front of 4,173 fans, the Hawkeyes gave the I-Cubs all they could handle before falling 4-2.

The game was a rousing success and it gave Iowa fans in central Iowa a chance to see their Hawkeyes dig in against top profes-sional talent.

The Hawkeyes hope to make events such as this a staple of their schedule.

The Hawkeye baseball program likes to kick off each season in style, and thats what they have done each of the past two years with the Lead-Off Dinner. Its a chance for fans to meet the years team and get a sneak preview of the upcoming season.

The Lead-Off Dinner also features speakers such as Chicago Cubs General Manager Jim Hendry, former NBC News President and Pulitzer Prize winner Michael Gartner, and former Hawkeye and currently Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Wes Obermueller. There is also a chance for baseball fans to get their hands on great memorabilia in the live and silent auctions. Past items have included autographed items from Hall of Famers Robin Yount, Paul Molitor and Steve Carlton; current stars Mark Prior, Alex Ro-driguez and Roger Clemens; and great baseball experiences like a luxury suite at an Iowa Cubs game, tickets to see the Chicago Cubs and Colorado Rockies Dream Package including tickets, accommodations and the opportunity to throw out the Þ rst pitch at the game. Training PhilosophyAt the University of Iowa, we strive to create a positive training en-vironment that will give each participant the very best opportunity to become better student-athletes. Individualized sport-speciÞ c training programs are designed to meet each student-athletes needs. The true success of any training program is in the imple-mentation. We believe that trust and adherence to a prescribed training program are established by educating student-athletes about their training throughout the process. Experience has shown that better educated student-athletes are more likely to train harder and smarter. Our training programs promote competi-tion, accountability, team unity and discipline.

Our training programs encompass all aspects of speed, agility, conditioning, strength, ß exibility and injury prevention with an em-phasis on proper technique and safety. Our programs are cen-tered around functional, free weight exercises such as the Olym-pic lifts (clean, jerk, snatch, etc.). These exercises are ideal for simulating the physiological rigors of athletic competition.

Following the completion of the 2004 baseball season and my four years of eligibility, I felt that the baseball program at the University of Iowa is on pace to becoming the premier program in the Big Ten and among the elite in the country. The University of Iowa provided me with an abundance of facilities fostering an environment of success for both the team and me as a student athlete. I strongly believe the Iowa baseball program brings together the student and the athlete whether it is through the Gerdin Learning Center, Athletic Student Services, the Bubble, or Duane Banks Field. I can proudly attest that all of these Þ ne facilities provide the setting for a person to reach their scholastic and athletic potential.

Jack Dahm and his coaching staff visibly create a positive environment for the Iowa Baseball program. I am conÞ dent that their dedication, commitment and knowledge of the game will guarantee the success of the student athlete and the baseball program for many years to come. The camaraderie and chemistry among the coaches and players was something special to be a part of and a chapter in my life I will always remember and treasure. The friendships I have made during my ten-ure at the University of Iowa will be with me for the rest of my life. I look forward to following the positive progress of the program. As a proud alumni of the University of Iowa and the Baseball Program, GO HAWKS!!

-Jim Reid, Class of 2004 Forever Iowa baseball will bring to my mind great memories of competi-

tion and camaraderie. Donning the Black and Gold was a tremendous experience. I will never forget running out onto Duane Banks Þ eld Þ lled with the pride of being a Hawkeye. Knowing that both teammates and coaches were there with the common goal of winning in mind, made it a pleasure to play for the University of Iowa. I owe a great deal to the Iowa Baseball program, allowing me to follow my dreams toward a professional career in baseball. I am excited for the bright future in the years to come. Coach Dahm and his staff have brought a great enthusiasm about baseball to the University of Iowa. I have no doubt that in the very near future Iowa baseball will be the team to beat in the Big Ten Conference.

Iowa baseball is fortunate to have the pitching coach it does in Coach Zumsande. He is a great teacher of the mental and physical aspects of pitching. His leadership inspired the pitching staff to accept their role; reminding us daily that to be a successful team, the pitchers must do their part. Coach Zumsande would never let us back down. He urged us to push ourselves to be better competitors on the mound. During my year under his leadership, he helped me to develop into a more experienced pitcher. Coach Zumsande motivated me to become the player that he knew I could be, inspiring me to take the next step in the pursuit of my dreams. I cannot say enough good things about Coach Zumsande, or thank him enough, and feel privileged and blessed to have been a player under his watch.

I origionally chose the University of Iowa because of the top notch academics and the environment. But being around the coaching staff here has shown me how important it is to have coaches who can teach me the game of baseball and give me an opportunity to play.

You can get a quality education at many places if you work hard, but it is the opportunites you take advantage of at your school that truly matters. If I was to choose a school all over again, my number one criteria would be the coaching staff, and I would once again come to Iowa.

Everything is in place here to help a person become successful after they graduate in both life and athletics.

With the NCAA limiting the number of scholarships a team can give, a successful walk-on program is essential for any team hop-ing to compete at a high level. No where is this more evident then at the University of Iowa, where Head Coach Jack Dahm has a history of developing walk-on players.

In his career, Coach Dahm has had eight players begin as walk-ons and end up playing professional baseball.

Two members of the current team, Austin Seward and Tim Gu-dex, began as walk-ons, became strong contributers and have now been put on scholarship.

Joining the University of Iowa baseball team as a walk-on gives a young player the chance to grow and mature as an athlete, as well as an opportunity to get an outstanding education, Dahm said. The entire coaching staff is committed to the deveopment of our walk-on program, because there is no question that in order to build a championship caliber program, you need a program that allows kids to develop and contribute to the success of the team.

Director of Athletics Bob Bowlsby is in his 14th year as the head of the University of Iowa intercollegiate athletics program.

As the chief administrator for Iowas athletic department, Bowlsby has earned a reputation as one of the most respected, energetic and ambitious athletic

administrators in the nation. Over the past four years Bowlsby has guided and supervised the merger of the womens and mens athletics departments. The combined entity encompasses 24 varsity sports and an annual budget in excess of $40 million.

As the head of Iowa athletics, Bowlsby has been involved in the hiring of new head coaches in football, mens and womens basketball and wrestling, enabling Iowa to maintain its standing as one of the most visible, successful and progressive departments in college athletics.

The success of Iowas athletic teams on the Þ eld is due, in part, to the behind the scenes work of Bowlsby and his staff. A number of major building and fund raising projects over the past few years enable Iowas student-athletes to train and compete in some of the Þ nest facilities in Division I athletics.

A Waterloo native, Bowlsby became Iowas 10th Athletic Director in June, 1991 after serving in the same role at the University of Northern Iowa since 1984. He previously served as Assistant Athletic Director for Facilities at Northern Iowa.

Bowlsby earned his bachelors degree from Moorhead State University (Minnesota) in 1975 and his masters degree from the University of Iowa in 1978.

The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) named Bowlsby in 2001-02 as Central Region Athletic Director of the Year and Sports Business Journal selected him from the four regional award winners as the National Athletics Director of the Year. The award highlights the efforts of the athletic directors for their commitment and positive contributions to campuses and their surrounding communities. Bowlsby was recently appointed to the 15 member commission on Opportunities in Athletics by US Secretary of Education, Rod Paige.

Bowlsby served as chair of the NCAA Wrestling Committee and has served on NCAA committees on Financial Aid and Amateurism, the Special Committee to Review Amateurism Issues and the Special Committee to Review Financial Conditions in Athletics. Bowlsby is in the midst of a Þ ve-year term on the NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament Committee, serving as committee chairman in 2003-04. The committee selects, seeds, brackets and manages all rounds of the NCAA Basketball Tournament, including the Final Four.

Bob has served as an Executive Committee member with both the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and the Division I-A Athletic Directors Association and served in 2002-03 as President of the I-A Directors group.

Bowlsby has also elected chair of the NCAA Olympic Sports Liaison Committee and represented the NCAA as one of two voting members on the United States Olympic Committee. Bowlsby also was appointed by former United States Olympic Committee President LeRoy Walker to the NCAA/USOC Liaison Committee, chaired by George Steinbrenner and former NCAA President Cedric Dempsey. Bob has also served as a member of the Board of Governors for the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Bowlsby is a charter member of the Iowa Olympics Committee and a current member of the Board of Directors of the Iowa Games. Bob is a board member of the Iowa Scholarship Fund, Inc. and a Board member on the Honda Awards program, which recognizes our nations top female collegiate athletes each year.

He and his wife, Candice, have four children, Lisa, Matt, Rachel and Kyle. Bowlsby was born Jan. 10, 1952.

The University of Iowa Athletic Department, un-der the direction of Athletic Director Bob Bowlsby for the past 13 years, is regarded as one of the top intercollegiate programs in the nation.

The mens and womens departments, operating separately for over 25 years, merged in 2001 under Bowlsbys direction. It combined nationally recog-nized programs for both genders into one success-ful and progressive athletic program.

Combining their successes on the playing Þ elds with continued success and recognition in the classroom, UI student-athletes practice and perform in some of the best facilities in the nation, while knowing the support of their efforts and at-tendance by Hawkeye fans ranks among the best in the country.

While the Hawkeyes continue to compete with the best in the nation in a variety of sports, Iowa continues to boast some of the most impressive athletic facilities in the nation, operated by one of the most respected departments.

Several new projects are underway on the Iowa campus. The goal is to improve all areas of the col-legiate experience for Hawkeye student-athletes. One of the latest additions to the UI campus is the Roy G. Karro Athletics Hall of Fame and Visitors Center.

Additional priorities for the Iowa program include the establishment and development of endowments for all sports programs, the continued enhance-ment of graduation rates, and the implementation of a long-range plan to ensure Iowas Þ nancial, academic and competitive future. As an example, all of Iowas 13 scholarships for mens basketball are fully endowed.

The graduation rate of Iowas student-athletes has improved in each of the past 10 years and has consistently ranked above the graduation rate of all UI students. Hawkeye athletes have garnered more than 55 academic All-America honors since 1992. In 1998-99 Iowa led the Big Ten in academic

all-Big Ten selections and Iowa ranked second in 1999-00. In 2002-03, over 140 male and female Iowa athletes earned academic all-Big Ten recogni-tion. During the 2003 fall semester, Iowas male and female athletes posted a combined grade point average of over 3.0.

Iowa athletes have been recognized as all-Americans in their sport on more than 185 occa-sions during the past 13 years.

Iowas athletic teams during the 2003-04 athletic year continued their trend of success, on the play-ing Þ elds and in their academic pursuits.

The Hawkeye football followed its 11-2 mark of 2002 with a 10-3 record in 2003, including a 37-17 win over Florida in the Outback Bowl in Tampa, FL. The Hawkeyes are one of 12 teams in the nation to win 21 games over the past two seasons. Iowa has played in January bowl games in each of the last two years and completed both the 2002 and 2003 seasons ranked eighth in the Þ nal national rankings.

Iowas mens and womens basketball teams have advanced to post-season play in each of the last four seasons. The mens squad earned sole possession of fourth place in the Big Ten Confer-ence, while the Hawkeye women tied for fourth and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

The Iowa wrestling squad earned the Big Ten title and went on to place second in the nation at the NCAA Tournament. Coach Jim Zalesky was named Big Ten Coach of the Year. Iowa has won six of the last 10 NCAA wrestling titles and nine of the last 14 championships.

Iowas mens and womens and gymnastics teams continue to rank among the best in the nation. The mens team again advanced to the NCAA Championships and the womens gymnas-tics squad advanced to the team competition at the NCAA championships for the second straight year.

Iowas womens softball team advanced to NCAA regional action for the ninth time in 11 sea-sons. Iowa has advanced to the softball World Series on four occasions over the past 10 seasons as Coach Gayle Blevins is one of three coaches to reach 1,000 career victories.

From the rankings on the courts and playing Þ elds, to the rankings in the classroom, to the rank-ings in fan and community support, to the ranking as a program that boasts some of the best athletic facilities in the nation, its easy to understand why Iowa fans everywhere truly believe, Its Great to be a Hawkeye.

Big-time athletics is a staple of student life at the University of Iowa.

Iowa hosts many post-s e a s o n champion-ships, in-cluding the 2005 Big Ten W r e s t l i n g Champion-ships.

HERKY THE HAWKEYE

THE HAWKEYE NICKNAME

SCHOOL FIGHT SONG

For 40 years Iowa was without school colors, but in 1887 a group of 50 seniors met on the steps of the Old Capitol to decide what are now the school ofÞ cial colors. They chose Old Gold, the color of Iowas vast corn Þ elds and Black, the color of the rich soil.

The University of Iowa borrowed its athletic nickname from the state of Iowa many years ago. The name Hawkeye was originally the name of the hero in the Þ ctional novel, The Last of the Mohicans, written by James Fenimore Cooper. Cooper had the Delaware Indians bestow the name on a white scout who lived with them. In 1838, 12 years after the book was published, people in the territory of Iowa acquired the nickname, chieß y through the efforts of Judge David Rorer of Burlington and James Edwards of Fort Madison. Edwards, editor of the Fort Madison Patriot, moved his paper to Burlington in 1843 and renamed it the Burlington Hawkeye. The two men continued their campaign to popularize the name, and territorial ofÞ cials eventually gave it their formal approval.

The Hawkeye nickname gained a tangible symbol in 1948 when a cartoon character, later to be named Herky the Hawkeye was hatched. The creator was Richard Spencer III, instructor of journalism at Iowa. The impish Hawk was an immediate hit and acquired a name through a statewide contest staged by the athletic department. John Franklin, a Belle Plaine alumnus, was the man who suggested Herky. Since his birth more than 45 years ago, Herky has symbolized Iowa athletics and epitomized University life. He even donned a military uniform during the Korean War and became the insignia of the 124th Fighter Squadron. During the mid-1950s, Herky came to life at a football game as the Iowa mas-cot. Since that time, Herky has been a familiar Þ gure at Iowa athletics events.
