QuickStart Guide- Maths Planning

This QuickStart Guide provides step-by-step guidance for how to plan a sequence of learning in mathematics. At the end of this guide you will find quick links to key planning resources. Maths planning begins in every Year Group (Reception-6) with Long Term Plans for the year, broken down termly. We use the White Rose Maths Hub long term plans; this guide uses Year 5 to model the planning sequence but the process is the same for each year group.

From the Long Term Plan, teachers follow the mathematics content. The sequence of learning is important and is always maintained. Within the Long Term Plan, statistics and elements of measure are often taught through Science and the Creative Theme.

Once the appropriate content is selected, planning is guided by the National Curriculum and its objectives. Teachers begin with the 2014 objectives and use Maths Hub Mastery Schemes of learning to support planning:

Then teachers use the mapping tools from the Surrey Maths Hub. These are available for all year groups on the Curriculum shared area.

The Lesson Breakdown and Textbook Mapping guides link the National Curriculum objectives to the relevant supporting resources from Maths No Problem.

Planning must be outcome led rather than content led. Teachers always begin with the intended outcome and then plan content and tasks to reach this objective. The Maths No Problem Resources are to support planning rather than providing daily tasks in sequence.

Each objective is broken down into three ‘I can’ statements selected by teachers which are personalised to pupils in their classes. All children will be learning the same but teachers will often present their learning in different ways or using different resources to achieve their objective.

Resources for independent activities can be taken from Maths No Problem, White Rose Maths Hub Mastery resources or self-created questions/ activities.

Maths No Problem also has a Teacher Hub with electronic resources and electronic versions of the Textbooks and Workbooks. The teacher Hub provides crucial guidance which teachers must use if they plan to follow the lesson approach suggested in the Maths No Problem textbook as this guides the teachers questioning and develops reasoning skills throughout the lessons.

The updated resources from the White Rose Maths Hub are broken in to a ‘small steps’ guidance whereby each of the national curriculum objectives is broken down in to contributory steps leading to the overall objective. The ‘small steps’ then feed into the ‘Guidance and Examples’ document, which gives more exemplar questions and problems which meet each of the curriculum objectives.
