• To display the libraries and devices that are availableto a Storage Node, double-click the Storage Node inthe navigation tree

Note: Auto-detection should not be used for devices on a Storage AreaNetwork (SAN) while the devices are in use, because this may cause themto become unresponsive. To avoid this situation, do not configure a devicein multiple EBS data zones.

During library configuration, the software automatical-ly detects that a library is a VTL, and updates theread-only Virtual Jukebox attribute to Yes.

Virtual Tape Library(VTL) configuration

Page 14: QUICKSTART GUIDE SUN STORAGETEK™ …mbw/OLD/networker/EBS_QSG.pdfQuickStart Guide: Sun StorageTek Enterprise Backup Software (EBS) 9 Use the Scan for Devicesoption to add devices

To back up to a File Type Device (FTD) or Advanced FileType Device (AFTD), you must create a new DeviceResource for the Storage Node.

• To copy your disk-based backups to tape, use SavesetStaging.

Note: Do not modify the directories or files created by FTDs or AFTDs, asthis will prevent the software from locating the device.

Create a directory for each disk (or partition) to be usedfor an FTD or AFTD. This will be used as the Devicename. For an NFS-mounted FTD or AFTD, ensure theNFS mount point is available by either automountingor manually mounting it as required.

Note: Do not use the /tmp directory for Devices because the data couldbe overwritten.

In the server’s Administration interface, click Devices.Right-click Devices in the navigation tree

Select New to open the Create Device window.

Replace the default Name with the complete path ofthe directory you created.

a. If the device is configured directly on the EBS Server, the name is the simple device path, such as /back-up/d0.

b. If the device is configured on a remote storage node, the name must indicate that by including rd= andthe name of the remote storage node. For example,if the remote storage node is neptune, then thedevice path might be rd=neptune:/backup/d0.

A Client is both a physical computer with EBS clientsoftware installed on it and a set of files and directoriesto be included in a scheduled backup. A Client resourcealso specifies information about the backup, such asthe backup schedule, the backup group, browsepolicies, and retention policies.

4. Under Save set, type the name of the file(s) ordirectories to be backed up.

a) Type All to back up all client data, including ACLs(access control lists). For Microsoft Windowsoperating systems, the SYSTEM or Volume ShadowCopy Service (VSS) SYSTEM savesets that determinethe client system’s state should be backed up on aregular basis.

b) If you only want to back up specific directories, placemultiple entries on separate lines. For example, toback up only the system configuration files and theoptional files, enter:

/etc/opt

Click OK when finished.

To verify that a client is enabled for scheduled backups, look for a check mark under the Scheduled backupcolumn.

Testing theInstallation

Page 22: QUICKSTART GUIDE SUN STORAGETEK™ …mbw/OLD/networker/EBS_QSG.pdfQuickStart Guide: Sun StorageTek Enterprise Backup Software (EBS) 9 Use the Scan for Devicesoption to add devices

To monitor the backup, right-click the group name andselect Show Details.

Note: The Operations tab and the Log tab in the Monitoring windowprovide additional detail.

If the backup completes successfully, you will see acheck mark in the Status column of the Administratorscreen.

Follow the instructions at the beginning of this Guideto install the client software on the additionalmachines that you wish to back up.

Note: Do not press Enter for the default response All. Accepting thedefault installs the server.

Define Client Resources using the steps under Testingthe Installation.

A single client computer can have several Clientresources, although clients with the same savesetcannot be in the same group.

• Suppose the accounting data on a computer shouldbe backed up according to a different schedule thanthe operating system files on the same computer. Toaccomplish this, create two Client resources on eachcomputer: one for accounting data andanother for operating system data.

• Another common reason to create multiple Clientresources for the same computer is to back up largeclient file systems more efficiently.

• A Client resource for each file system on a computercan be scheduled to back up its data separately.
