President’s Message

Our 2018 Raffle Quilt had its debut at our February meeting. This is a really special

and unique quilt, and there are so many people to thank. First, there are the 30 mem-

bers who created the blocks. Each block was a unique expression of one person’s crea-

tivity. Actually, there were three more that could not be fit into the quilt, but they will

be made into a wall hanging or table runner to be given to the person who sells the

most raffle tickets. So everyone make your best effort to sell your tickets, and more if

possible, to try to win this great prize!

Thank you to Jo Lynn O’Neil for the fantastic custom quilting that elevates the overall

beauty of this quilt, to Betty New for binding the quilt, to Donna Motley for the hang-

ing sleeve, and to Marsha Corlley for the great embroidered label. It takes a village to

make a quilt this special.

Beverly Lindsey deserves many thanks for all her effort over the years to sell raffle

tickets at special events throughout the area and at other quilter’s guilds. She has put

in many hours and miles promoting this Guild’s raffle quilts. So, when she asks each

of us to sell $30 of raffle tickets, remember she has travelled all over to sell thousands

of dollars in tickets over the years.

Our Raffle Quilt is one of the two primary fund raisers we have each year. We depend

on funds from this quilt, plus either the Quilt Show or Quilt Auction, to further the

Guild’s purpose of preserving the art of quilting, stimulating interest in quilt making,

providing assistance to the community concerning the art of quilting, and providing

educational instruction in the art of quilting to our members and to the public. And, one

of the ways we further that purpose is by providing quality speakers and workshops.

Each year, one of our major expenses is the contracts with those program and work-

shop providers. Our average annual expense for program speakers is $4,800 and for

workshops is $3,800. In addition, there are costs for charitable donations, comfort

quilts, rent, the newsletter, association dues, insurance, and others. Membership dues

only bring in an average of $3,000 annually. As you can see, membership dues don’t

begin to cover our expenses.

Therefore, fund raising is an important part of our activities and I thank everyone for

their efforts to sell raffle tickets, make and donate quilts for our auction, make and en-

ter quilts in our show and mini quilt auction, and make the many great items we sell in

the Country Store. I hope you do these things because it is fun and gratifying, but also

know the Guild needs your participation to have successful fund raisers. Thank you

all!

2018 Programs and Workshops

March – Maggie Ball, Dragonfly Quilts

Program: “Innovative Quilts, Traditional Roots—Trunk Show”. This is a lecture with quilt show, reviewing Mag-gie’s years as a quilter including her experiences teaching kids to quilt and voluntary work in Mongolia—inspirations, growth, and evolution. Maggie began quilting in 1986 and enjoys creating her own designs from ele-ments of traditional patterns. She is an award winning national and international quilter. She has extensive teach-ing experience in the US and abroad, including many school children. She was instrumental in organizing quilting in Mongolia.

Workshop (Saturday, Mar. 17, North Side Baptist Church, 910 N. Main St.): “Op-Art Kaleidoscope”. You will create a small wall hanging, approximately 36 inches square, using a template-free, ruler-free method. The process involves making large kaleidoscope blocks that are cut into sections, rearranged, and them reassembled using only two fabrics. A simple process gives a stunning result. The pattern is available for $5 at the workshop.

See her website dragonflyquilts.com

April– Comfort Quilt Sew-In 2:00 PM. - 8:30 P.M. dinner will be provided.

May – Maria Hall, Charming Prints Quilting

Program: “No Pattern, No Problem”. Afraid of buying panels or large-scale fabric because you don’t have a pat-tern to fit it into? Some fabric is just too cute to be cut up into small pieces! In this trunk show of quilts, Maria will display a wide variety of quilts, from simple to complicated, small and large, that can be made without a pat-tern. You will be eager to visit the local quilt shop afterwards to purchase those panels and cute large-repeat fab-rics!

Workshop (Friday, May 18, North Side Baptist Church, 910 N. Main St.): “No Pattern, No Problem”. You will need to bring focus fabric and coordinating material. You will receive personal instruction and attention and may very well leave the workshop with a finished quilt!

COMFORT QUILT SEW-IN

APRIL 19, 2018 2 P.M.

It’s time once again for our sew-in for Comfort Quilts. This year will be a little different. We will have some kits available but this year some of us will be bringing our own patterns and fabric from our stash to make the quilts that our charities really love. We are also asking that you com-plete the quilts before you turn them in. If you need help in the quilting of the smaller quilts, there are some members who do quilt on their domestic machines that can help.

So this year, we are listing the items that you need to bring:

1. Sewing machines

2. Sewing tools and supplies (rulers, thread, cutters, etc) extension cord

3. Sewing table (optional)

4. If you are bringing your own pattern and fabric, a suggestion is to have it cut before you come to the sew-in. Be sure to have enough fabric for the backing and binding. There will be fabric for you to take in addition to what kits will be available.

5. There will be patterns available at the March guild meeting for you to take and then pre-pare your project for the Sew In in April.

The room will be set up as it was for last years sew-in.

Dinner will be provided along with water.

2018 Quilt Show – Quilts in Bloom

We have 2 challenges going for the quilt show. First is the show theme challenge, your interpretation of the

theme “Quilts in Bloom”. Any size is eligible for this category, so anything goes. Let your imagination run

wild!

The second challenge is Mary’s Presidents Challenge. Fat eighths were distributed at the last guild meeting,

fabric to be used for a mini quilt. The mini quilt is to be donated to the miniature quilt auction at the show and

a ribbon will be awarded by our judge for the challenge. The quilts will then be sold in the auction. This is a

fun way to show your creativity.

We hope everyone will have quilt in the show. Please share your work to make our show our best. And re-

member, all quilts must have a sleeve.

Fat Quarter Raffle

Our first winner in the Fat Quarter Raffle was Marsha Corlley. She won 76 red and pink fat

quarters. For March the Raffle will Quilting Retreat be black and white fat quarters. Remem-

ber to bring your fat quarters and see how many you can win.

Good Luck to all
