Welcome to tonight’s program. What a privilege it’s going to be to spend our evening in the company of a true music industry legend.

After tonight, we’ll have a bit of a break in the season as we make way for a long run of The Lion King at the Landmark Theater. When our crew trucks leave the theater late tonight, the Lion King tractor trailers will begin pulling in behind them, and the transformation of the Landmark for this amazing, award-winning Broadway musical will begin. The curtain will go up on February 15th.

It’s great to see productions like Wicked and The Lion King coming to Richmond and doing so well. It’s good for our community’s lovers of arts and culture, and it’s good for the Landmark Theater. Ultimately, it’s these kinds of large commercial productions that will make the extensive theater upgrades that we’ve all been waiting for possible. In fact, I am very pleased to share with you that you will be seeing renovated restrooms and brand new restrooms next season! So, we are more than happy to spread out our dates in order to accommodate The Lion King.

When we reconvene, seven weeks from tonight on March 24th, we’re going to have an extremely lively program on our hands! Nothing could be more central to American political debate today than the state of the American Social Contract. The questions involved in that debate are at the core of the Occupy Wall Street movement, as well as the individual health care mandate that will be before the U.S. Supreme Court just days after our March program.

Charles Krauthammer and Robert Reich have each written and spoken extensively on the topic, but have never taken the stage together to

to

r

debate their viewpoints. Dr. Krauthammer and Professor Reich

have agreed to give focus to the discussion by zeroing in on the question, “Should the American Social Contract be more like Europe’s?” We look forward to a lively and civil discourse.

Also at our March program, we’ll be announcing the speakers for our 2012-2013 season; always an exciting event.

Our April program, “Revolutionizing Education in America,” has also generated a great level of interest and conversation. Those who know Sir Ken Robinson from his famous presentation at the TED Conference several years ago know that we’re in for a real treat. It’s recently been announced that our second speaker for that program, Rafe Esquith, will appear at TED this year, on the same stage that made Robinson so famous. We look forward to bringing both—the education visionary and the acclaimed classroom teacher—together for the first time on our stage.

But first things first! Please enjoy tonight’s very special program at The Richmond Forum and, as always, we thank you for your support.

Last year, a Los Angeles Times reporter wrote, “A conversation with Quincy Jones is like talking to a jukebox loaded with platinum singles.” Tonight, the music industry legend known to his friends as “Q” will sit down and share the stories of his life and career with The Richmond Forum.

Born in Chicago’s South Side ghetto during the Depression, young Quincy spent his early years in a dangerous world filled with crime, violence, and poverty. When he was seven, he was attacked on the street, his hand pinned to a wooden fence with a switchblade.

When he was ten, his family moved to Seattle, Washington, where Quincy discovered a vibrant music scene, as well as his own musical talents. At 13, Count Basie became his mentor and Quincy began playing trumpet at weddings in a combo that he formed with a teenage singer-pianist named Ray Charles.

Soon, Jones was on the road with Lionel Hampton and playing and arranging with such greats as Tommy Dorsey, Sarah Vaughan, Count Basie, and Duke Ellington. The “who’s who” of Jones’ career hasn’t stopped in the six decades since and has included chart-topping collaborations with Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Michael Jackson, and hundreds more.

Quincy won his first Grammy in 1963, for his Count Basie arrangement of “I Can’t Stop Loving You.” In the mid-60s, Quincy served as conductor and arranger for Frank Sinatra; Quincy’s arrangement of “Fly Me To The Moon” was the first recording played by astronaut Buzz Aldrin when he landed upon the moon’s surface in 1969.

An impresario in the broadest and most creative sense of the word, Jones’ résumé has

included the roles of composer, record producer, artist, film producer, arranger, conductor, instrumentalist, TV producer, record company executive, magazine founder, multi-media entrepreneur, and humanitarian.

In 1985, Jones produced the film The Color Purple, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey, and Danny Glover. He also produced the television series The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and published the magazines Vibe and SPIN.

He produced the top-selling album of all time —Michael Jackson’s Thriller—and the top-selling single of all time—We Are The World.

Quincy Jones is the all-time most-nominated Grammy artist, with a total of 79 nominations and 27 awards. He has also received an Emmy, seven Academy Award nominations, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

In 2001, Jones was a Kennedy Center Honoree and, in 2011, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Obama.

Tim Reid is as much “Venus Flytrap,” the quick-witted, philosopher of the airwaves he portrayed on WKRP in Cincinnati, as he is Frank Parrish, the struggling restaurateur he portrayed in the critically acclaimed series, Frank’s Place.

A fixture in Hollywood for more than 30 years, his work in front of and behind the camera has afforded him unique insight into the ways in which media can be, and often is, used to manipulate and influence public opinion. Thus, while he still enjoys acting, Tim currently devotes much of his time to producing documentaries and television programs that provide unique views of the legacy of a people who played an essential role in shaping the destiny of America. This work, reaching across cultures and generations, provides a much-

needed and potent antidote to the tired and often negative portrayals of Americans of African decent in the mainstream media. Through his Legacy Media Institute, Tim is sharing with emerging filmmakers the skills and responsibilities inherent in being a part of the content creation business.

Tim and his wife, Daphne Maxwell Reid, live in Petersburg, Virginia where they also own and operate New Millenium Studios, a full-service film studio.

The Quincy Jones Musiq Consortium

The Quincy Jones Musiq Consortium was founded in April 2009 for the purpose of improving the availability and quality of music education for children in the United States.

QJMC’s mission is to support cooperative music education endeavors that could not be accomplished by any organization working alone.

QJMC collaborates with over 175 community and organizational leaders in 35 cities across the United States, working together to create a unique and unprecedented advancement toward reversing the endemic decline of music education in schools in the U.S. QJMC has combined the resources of professional experience in music education, the music industry, the philanthropic sector, and the private citizenry to bring the positive power of music to children.

A core QJMC initiative is its signature Quincy Jones American Popular Music Curriculum. A collaboration with the project RECORDING: The History of Recorded Music will infuse the curriculum with exclusive interview and video footage.

Next steps for the Quincy Jones American Popular Music Curriculum include production, piloting, and eventually disseminating to all students in the U.S.

Jazz 21The Voice of Social Change

What’s jazz got to do with it? Jazz is creative expression. It is collaboration and improvisation. It tells a story. It is an American art form that has been a vehicle for social change throughout history, especially during the Civil Rights Movement.

In partnership with Elegba Folklore Society, the VCU Jazz Studies department, and Richmond Shakespeare, middle and high school students from Chesterfield, the city of Richmond, and a consortium of private schools are exploring history through the literature, music, and other social commentary that influenced the Civil Rights Movement. They are using arts-based strategies to more personally connect with the events of the era. For example, students learn the theater technique of “tableau,” which means “frozen picture,” to explore the thoughts and feelings of participants in sit-ins and protests. Ultimately, students will create new jazz works and works of visual art to promote positive social change around current issues in our 21st-century global society.

Tonight, we are pleased to have Jazz 21 students with us in our Student Room. This evening, they will have a unique opportunity to visit with Quincy Jones, one of the iconic names at the center of their studies.

Jazz 21 is just one facet of the BrightLights Education Initiatives of Richmond CenterStage. For nearly three years, CenterStage has

been working with area teachers and artists to design unique opportunities for learning in and through the arts. Who’s involved? Schools in Richmond, Chesterfield, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, New Kent, Powhatan, a consortium of private schools, and arts organizations across our community. CenterStage strives to give all these students access to arts education. Part of this access includes giving teachers what they need to shape their arts classes. CenterStage wants arts

education opportunities for our kids that can change their lives, while promoting greater access to the arts in their daily learning and living.

We were so fortunate to see and hear this man. My friends all over the USA wonder why there is not a forum in their town.

The American Social Contract

March 24, 2012

Sir Ken Robinson & Rafe EsquithRevolutionizing Education in America

April 21, 2012

The debate of the American Social Contract may be the most important debate of our time. While some Americans argue that individual freedoms are being eroded at an unprecedented rate, others advocate for protections meant to benefit society as a whole. We have invited two of America’s most respected intellects to tackle the topic head-on. Charles Krauthammer is a Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post columnist and conservative commentator. Robert Reich is one of the nation’s leading thinkers about work and the economy and the former U.S. Secretary of Labor.
