Library Board Update National Library WeekIt has been a while since you've heard from the Board sosome of this info reaches back a bit.

The removal of the two trees at the library has certainlyopened up the front of the library so the landscaping wasmore noticeable this year. Comments are running aboutequal - some like the look just as it is and some miss thetrees. The Board is looking into replacing the trees withsmall ornamental ones that don't bear fruit.

A write up about the Quincy Library has been submittedfor inclusion in the 3rd Branch County History Book beingcompiled.

The Nika Club of Quincy donated over $1500 from theirannual auction that supports the library.

The library continues to run smoothly but monies to runall the libraries are down and District has asked eachlibrary to cut their hours open to 25, the number allowedin the Plan of Service. The board voted to go to thefollowing hours as of January 1, 2012:

Monday ClosedTuesday 9-5Wednesday 11-5Thursday ClosedFriday 9-5Saturday 9-12

One more item of interest to some of you is that overduefees will increase from 10 cents per day/per item to 25cents.

In October, the board voted to retain the present officersfor another year. They are President, Teddy Sinclair;vice-president, Mary Jo Kranz; Secretary, Judy Dobson;Treasurer, Connie Karney and trustees Carol Ludlow andBarb Rockhold complete the board.

At our December meeting, Lisa informed the board thatthe library had received a $4000 donation from AndyZeck in memory of his sister, Susan Zeck. This donationis to be used for a need at the library and we continue tobe amazed at the generosity of those who have aconnection with the library - either at present or from thepast.

It was noted that during the 2011 ice storm early in theyear with all the power outages, the library was a warmand entertaining place to be. I think it should be notedthat the library is a comfortable place to be no matterwhat the temperature or time of year. Please come inand learn to use all of the services available.- Judy Dobson, Secretary

We all know about the National Library Week, but manyof us do not know how or when this event started.Below is a bit of the history behind this week. In 1954the American Library Association and the American BookPublishers formed the National Book Committee as anon profit organization and the group started to plan forthe first National Library week. In 1958, the committee'swork was finally recognized and the first National LibraryWeek was held with the first theme of "Wake Up andRead!" From then on the National Library Week was heldtypically the second week in April. In 1974, the NationalBook Committee was disbanded and the ALA assumedfull sponsorship of the program.

Many school libraries celebrate the whole month of Aprilas School Library Month which is sponsored by theAmerican Association of School Librarians, which is adivision of the ALA.

Below is schedule of events for this year'sLibrary Week which will be April 8-14, 2012.
