As we cruise into 2018, let me wish everyone a very Happy New Year! Although it may seem like just the start of another year, it is in fact a huge milestone for the Association as we conclude our 110th Anniversary celebrations of 2017.

As you will read on pages 6–12, the Safe Driving and Mobility Conference and AA 110th Anniversary Dinner were organised with great success. At the conference, a diverse range of road safety topics were covered extensively, illustrating the importance

cooperation is needed from every arm of the industry, including other automotive-related organisations, knowledge and service providers, the authorities and motorists themselves; it cannot be the sole effort of the Association.

The AA 110th Anniversary Dinner was held at the end of the one-and-a-half-day conference, and we were delighted to share a special birthday celebration for the Association that night as we cut into the birthday cake, which weighed more than 100kg (check page 12 to see a photo).

Those who have gone on driving trips overseas would have noticed that different countries have their own unique driving cultures — and some practices can leave you bewildered! On page 24, read more about some unusual road rules that apply in other parts of the world.

If you are planning to go for a road trip soon, it would be helpful to know the different types of tyres best suited to handle the various terrains and seasons. Page 28 has that information for you.

With the popularity of our Autoventure tours, we know Singaporeans are keen to travel and drive in foreign places. AA Singapore always advocates following local road rules no matter

CELEBRATING 110 YEARS IN STYLE

The Automobile Association of Singapore (AA Singapore) turned 110 in 2017, a milestone celebrated throughout the year with numerous events, including an Autoventure drive. The celebrations ended with the Safe Driving and Mobility Conference 2017 and AA 110th Anniversary Dinner.

THE CONFERENCE Renowned speakers and road safety experts from around the world convened in Singapore to share their insights at the Safe Driving and Mobility Conference 2017. Held at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre on 20 and 21 October, the event attracted more than 200 participants.

Apart from showcasing the latest developments in mobility

technology, the event was aimed at encouraging dialogue among government authorities, road safety professionals, automotive manufacturers and other relevant industry players. Points brought up by the speakers as well as during panel discussions and a networking session shared a common goal: to make the roads safer for drivers, passengers and pedestrians.

AA 110TH ANNIVERSARY DINNER The gala dinner at Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre was probably the most glamorous event in the range of activities held to celebrate AA Singapore’s 110th anniversary.

Held on 21 October, the dinner was jointly organised by AA Singapore and the Singapore Road Safety Council (SRSC). More than 500 guests turned up, including Guest-of-Honour Mr K Shanmugam, Minister for Home Affairs and Law.

Apart from celebrating AA Singapore’s anniversary, the event was also a platform to showcase the Singapore Road Safety Awards and thank partners for their support and contribution towards the road safety cause.

Mr Shanmugam lauded the efforts of AA Singapore and SRSC in partnering the Ministry of Home

These efforts have helped to reduce road fatalities by 30% over the last decade. “In some ways, these are unsung efforts because it is not the sexiest part of what is done out there. One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of

the Singapore Road Safety Awards (SRSA) 2017, which comprises the Champion and Merit awards. Introduced in 2015, the SRSA

companies that had actively promoted road safety through safety policies and appropriate training for their drivers and riders, vocational drivers/riders who had maintained good driving records, and vocational drivers/riders who had shown an improvement in their driving behaviour over a period of three years. This year, the Champion awards for all three categories were sponsored by AAS Academy and

What happens when diesel is used in a petrol engine

in that situation?

Do you remember that episode of the reality TV show, The Amazing Race, where one of the

contestants pumped petrol into a diesel car? Needless to say, the car broke down after a while. It was not a pretty sight — and it could happen to you!

WHEN YOU PUT PETROL IN A DIESEL ENGINEIf you put petrol in a diesel car, you need to act quickly. If you drive away or even start the car with petrol in the mix, you could be dealing with potentially costly damage to the engine.

A diesel engine has parts, such as the fuel injection pump, that depend on the diesel’s lubricating properties to run smoothly. Petrol, acting as a solvent when mixed with diesel, has the opposite effect — it increases friction between parts, causing damage to the fuel lines and pump.

Unfortunately, it takes a while for a diesel engine to begin showing signs of processing the wrong fuel. This may start with the emission of black smoke — due to unburnt fuel — before sluggishness and stalling set in. Your car will most likely not be able to start after that.

KNOW YOUR CAR

WHEN YOU PUT DIESEL IN A PETROL ENGINEPutting diesel in a petrol engine isn’t as bad, since diesel needs to be compressed before it’ll ignite. Chances are, you may not even be able to start the engine. Additionally, diesel pump nozzles tend to be larger than most petrol fuel necks, so putting diesel in a petrol car doesn’t happen all that often.

But let’s say you manage to drive off. The diesel, which is heavier and oilier than petrol, will

quickly. This will cause your car to shudder and maybe stall. The next part to get affected would be the spark plugs. Your car will most likely start to emit white smoke and lose power before it stalls completely.

REMEDIAL ACTIONIf it is your lucky day and you realise your mistake before starting the engine, DO NOT start the engine. DO NOT even put the key in the ignition.

After the six-month internship, I joined the company as a permanent staff. We were taught to repair cars as part of my diploma but it was during my internship, when I was attached to a senior mechanic, that I learnt many practical skills.

BUY THE RIGHT TYRES

The lifespan of a tyre depends on its design as well as the climate, road conditions and how well

it has been maintained. It is also affected by the way you drive. If you drive like you are in a Formula One race, you will obviously wear out your tyres faster. If you drive cautiously, your tyres should last

While we cannot control factors such as strong sunlight, potholes and other obstacles, we can do our part to do routine maintenance

If you are wondering whether it is time to change the tyres, start by doing the following checks:

Look at your tyres: Check for uneven tread wear or shallow tread and inspect for holes or damaged valve caps. You should also look out for rocks, nails and other small bits that may have lodged in the tyres — these will damage your tyres over time.

Pay attention to the feel of your tyres when driving:indicates that your tyres may be worn or damaged. If you notice vibrations or other disturbances, reduce speed immediately and drive cautiously until you can safely stop somewhere to inspect your tyres. If a tyre is damaged, replace it with your spare one. If you cannot identify the problem, take your vehicle to a workshop for a thorough inspection.

With combined fuel consumption of just 5.0 litres/100km, and emitting only 114g/km of CO2, the TSI is arguably one of the most eco-conscious cars on the road.

Safety systems that were previously found only in higher-end models are now standard in the VW Golf. The proactive occupant protection system detects potential accidents like the initiation of hard braking, then activates brake assistant,

which automatically pre-tensions the seatbelts of the driver and front passenger to ensure the best possible protection. When an unstable driving situation is detected — such as severe oversteer or understeer with ESC intervention — the side windows and sunroof are also closed, except for a small gap to allow for the head and side airbags to absorb crash energy optimally and thereby achieve their best possible effectiveness (in Comfortline and up).

The Falls is one of the most popular waterfalls in Tasmania. That may be because it’s one of the tallest in the state, with a drop of over 90m. The beautiful forests and wooded hills of the reserve are an attraction in their own right, lush with beech, myrtle, sassafras and tree fern. Many visitors also come here to enjoy the tumbling waters of the South George River, which falls over steep granite ledges.

B R I D E S T O W E L A V E N D E R E S T A T E At a sprawling 260 acres, Bridestowe Lavender Estate is the world’s largest privately owned lavender farm and an agro-tourism star. Each year, more than 50,000 visitors walk through its beautiful

There is an interesting story behind this farm. It originated with a London perfumer named C K Denny, who migrated to Tasmania with his family in 1921.

He brought with him a packet of lavender seeds from the southern French Alps, the source of true French lavender. C K realised that the similar climate between the lavender-growing regions of Provence, France, and Tasmania, Australia, would enable him to make his dream of producing the best lavender in the world come true. He and his family started Bridestowe Estate with

The family discovered that planting in curved rows helped to make the most of the rainfall and reduce erosion. They also used cuttings instead of seeds, which enabled them to control the lavender oil quality and produce a high-quality product consistently.

Their gift shop has heaps of lovely things to buy as presents, from skin creams, soaps and linen sachets to lavender pancakes and teas to their mascot Bobbie Bear’s heat packs.

D E V I L S @ C R A D L E T A S M A N I A N D E V I L S A N C T U A R Y The eastern side of the Sanctuary is about 500m from the entrance of Cradle Mountain National Park. From the Sanctuary, you can take in panoramic views of Cradle Mountain’s untouched beauty

1,500m. There are other natural features, such as the temperate rainforest, alpine woodland, vistas of buttongrass moorlands and high plateaus. These natural features all make Cradle Mountain a teeming home for alpine creatures.

The Sanctuary is situated on a property that has largely been left wild, so it has an abundance of eucalyptus trees, myrtle forests and mountain grasslands. These are important natural habitats for Tasmanian devils and other marsupials. The western side of the sanctuary faces Reynolds Falls and Vale of Belvoir Reserved Land, which provide an undisturbed
