• Choose the type of question you wish to add

OPTION 2: UTILIZING QUESTION BANK

• From the same screen that appears after selecting ‘Edit Quiz,’ Change the category on the right side of the screen to the ‘Default for

the appropriate test’

At this point you can add questions from the Question Bank

• Open Course and Select Question Bank from the Settings Bar

• Go back to the settings on the right side and click ‘Import’ under Question Bank

USING GIFT FORMAT

• Symbols to know:

• {} Creates a text box

• ~ Indicates an incorrect answer

• = Indicates a correct answer

• # Indicates a numerical answer

• TRUE/FALSE Indicate the correct answer only

GENERAL GIFT GUIDELINES • GIFT format only works in a pristine text document, so you can’t use Microsoft Word

for this function because it has formatting.

• Open WordPad or NotePad

• WordPad tends to be more user-friendly because it looks a lot like Word, which is what most of us are familiar with

• NotePad acts more like a sticky note – you cannot format in any way. It only saves the text you are typing.

• If you already have your quiz questions typed up in a word file, simply copy and paste them into WordPad or NotePad. However, simply copying and pasting your questions does not automatically convert it to GIFT format, so you can wait to do this until you have already written the questions in the GIFT code.

• Copying and pasting into WordPad or NotePad gets rid of all the formatting and leaves you with plain text.

• Save your file in WordPad or NotePad as a (.txt) file. This will save it as a “text document” or “plain text document.” Different programs call it different things, so just make sure it says (.txt)!

MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS AND GIFT

NOTE: For multiple choice questions, you’ll be using the following symbols:

• {} brackets to indicate answer choices

• ~ to indicate incorrect answers

• = to indicate correct answers

MULTIPLE CHOICE EXAMPLE• Typically, your multiple choice question might look like this:

• Abraham Lincoln was born in which state?

• Kentucky

• Illinois

• Tennessee

• Rhode Island

• Kentucky is correct, so the same question in GIFT format would look like this:

• Abraham Lincoln was born in which state? {=Kentucky ~Illinois ~Tennessee ~Rhode Island}

• The equal (=) sign is in front of “Kentucky,” indicating that “Kentucky” is the correct answer. The tilde (~) sign is in front of “Illinois,” “Tennessee,” and “Rhode Island,” indicating that they are all incorrect answers.

SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS AND GIFT

• For short answer questions, you’ll be using the following symbols:

• {} brackets to indicate answer text

• = to indicate correct answers

SHORT ANSWER EXAMPLE

• Normally the question may look like this:

• “Abraham Lincoln was born in which state?”(The correct answer is Kentucky)

• In GIFT format the question would look like this:

• Abraham Lincoln was born in which state? { =Kentucky}

ESSAY QUESTIONS AND GIFT FORMAT

• For essay questions, you’ll be using the following symbols:

• {} brackets to create a text box

ESSAY EXAMPLE

• Normally your question may look like this:

• “Discuss three ways that Abraham Lincoln’s presidency impacted the outcome of the Civil War”

• In GIFT format, the same question would look like this:

• Discuss three ways that Abraham Lincoln’s presidency impacted the outcome of the Civil War. {}

• You don’t put any text within the brackets when you create this type of question.

TRUE/FALSE QUESTIONS AND GIFT

• NOTE: For True/False questions, you’ll be using the following symbols:

• {} brackets to indicate answer choices

• TRUE to indicate that the correct answer is true

• FALSE to indicate that the correct answer is false

TRUE/FALSE EXAMPLE

• Normally the question may look like this:

• True or False: Abraham Lincoln was the 18th President of the United States. (The correct answer is False.)

• The same question, in GIFT format, would look like this:

• Abraham Lincoln was the 18th President of the United States. {FALSE}

• All you need to do is indicate if the correct answer is TRUE or FALSE by typing the correct answer within the brackets, as shown above.

NUMERICAL QUESTIONS AND GIFT

• For questions with numerical answers, you’ll be using the following symbols:

• {} brackets to indicate answer choices

• # to indicate that the answer is a number rather than words

NUMERICAL QUESTION EXAMPLE

• Normally, the question may look like this

• In what year did Abraham Lincoln give the Gettysburg Address?(The correct answer is 1863.)

• In GIFT format, the same question would look like this:

• In what year did Abraham Lincoln give the Gettysburg Address? {#1863}
