• Are used to set off direct speech and information cited from other sources.
– NO QUOTES: • My dad told me to go to the store.
– QUOTES:• My dad told me, “Go to the store.”
Use QUOTATION marks when someone is talking.
• EXAMPLES:–“Where are you going?” Oscar asked.–“I am going to Reynosa,” responded Karina.–“Do you have family there?” he questioned.–“Yes,” Karina added.
Capitalization in Quotes
• Capitalize the first word in a direct quotation, even when it is in the middle of a sentence.
• Examples:– “Don’t talk,” said Ms. Pena–Ms. Pena said, “Don’t talk.”– “Don’t,” said Ms. Pena , “talk.”
Dialogue Rules • “Talk,” sentence.– “Don’t go out,” said Ms. P.
• Sentence, “Talk.”– Ms. P. said, “Don’t go out.”
