Evolution of the State

• Ottomans expanded West:– Orkhan I led Ottomans against the Byzantines 1345– Absorbed Muslims, Christians, Jews- Asians and Europeans-

Serbs, Croats, Bosinians– Established settlements ruled by Turkish “beys”– Murad I succeeded his father, united Balkans 1360– Created on of the most cosmopolitan and diverse empires

in the world- bathhouses- mosques-libraries– Protected Religious freedoms as long as people were

obedient and paid the Jitza• Created new administration and new class of people “Janissaries”-

Christians recruited, educated, trained for the sultan

Fall of Constantinople– 1389 Ottomans defeated Serbs & Bosnians (Bayazid I)– 1396 Ottomans defeated Hungarian King– 1453 Ottomans conquered Constantinople- renamed it• Strategically- how did that happen???

• Why is that a big deal?– Represented the end of the Roman Empire– Transition from Latin to Arabic- Istanbul– Sultan Mehmet II- establishes himself as one of the

GREATEST MUSLIM RULERS (1451-1481)– Muslims gain seat of power in Europe• Seen as better rulers, est. better government, more educated• Created a panic through all of Europe-

– “The Terror of the Turk”

Ottoman Empire Eastward Expansion• Once conquest of Constantinople was complete- look East– Ottomans began to expand East into the (Shi ite) Safavids

• Part of this fight was trade dispute / part of this was religious disagreement

– 1514 Selem I Unites all of the Mesopotamia / Middle East• Then the Ottomans focused on Egypt and Syria

– By 1517 The Ottomans had conquered Cairo– Ottomans controlled several religious cities- Mecca, Jerusalem, Damascus– Based on this- Selem I declared himself the new caliph

» What’s going on in Europe during this time??????• Selem I then spread across the coastal cities of North Africa

– Used appointed pashas to rule the local people & collect taxes.– This allowed for the Ottomans to control trade in Med. & Middle East
