A Tale of the Two Roses”.
THE ISLE OF VOICES
Kalamake is an evil wizard who lives in Molokai
a island in the kingdom of Hawaii. Kalamake is a
very strange man: his skin is whiter than the
normal, his hair have the colour of dry grass and
is also blind. “Blind as Kalamake who can see
the future” said the people of Molokai….
THE ISLE OF VOICES
Kalamake’s daughter , Lehua live with her
husband, Keola in her father’s house. Keola didn’t
know much about his father-in-law but one thing
troubled him. Kalamake had a lot of money but he
never worked. The people in Molokai said “Shiny
as Kalamake’s dollars”. But no one know where
the shiny dollars come from…
THE ISLE OF VOICES
“One day, when Lehua and Kalamake was not
home, Keola decided to find out where he hid his
money. He remembered that when everybody
slept, Kalamake sat at his desk and looked at
books. Then he could hear the sound of the
drawer and closing slowly…”
THE ISLE OF VOICES
“Keola went to the desk drawer and looked at it for a
moment. Then he opened it and saw Kalamake’s shiny
dollars. The next day, the ship which came once a
month with a lot of special food arrived in Molokai.
Keola stood in front of the house and watched the ship
coming into the bay. While he was thinking, Kalamake
came and stood behind him. The old wizard was
worried…”
THE ISLE OF VOICES
- Is that the ship? he asked.- Yes, answered Keola.- Well, then I must tell you my secret
Keola. Come into the house. So they went into the elegant living room.
There was a shelf with a lot of books, a Bible on the table and pictures on the walls. It was the living room of a rich
man…
THE ISLE OF VOICES
- Close the windows while I lock all the
doors, said Kalamake.
He opened the desk drawer and took out some
necklaces and some tree leaves.
- Now I’m going do something magic, said
Kalamake…
THE ISLE OF VOICES
“…He put the Bible under the sofa and got a mat. He
put the leaves on the some sand in a little pan. Then
he and Keola put on the necklaces and sat on opposite
sides of the mat. “Don’t be afraid” said the wizard,
lighting the leaves saying strange words. The smoke
and the strange words confused Keola. Suddenly the
mat and the living room disappeared…”
THE ISLE OF VOICES
“…A moment later Keola and the wizard
were on the same mat, on a beach near
the sea, under the hot sun. Keola was
very surprised and didn’t know what to
say…”
THE ISLE OF VOICES
- What’s happening? cried Keola. Why are
we on this beach and not in our living
room?
- Don’t worry, said Kalamake. Now we’re
here.
- Where we are? asked Keola…
THE ISLE OF VOICES
- That’s not important, said Kalamake. We’re
here now and that’s the important thing. Go
to the woods and bring me a lot of these
special leaves. Be quick. We must be home
before the ship arrives.
Keola got up from the mat and started walking
on the beach of bring sand and shiny shells…
THE ISLE OF VOICES
- Why don’t I know this beach? Keola thought,
looking around. This place doesn’t look like
Hawaii. One day I’ll come back and take this
beautiful shells.
He soon found the special leaves he was looking for in the
woods near the beach. Ashe walked towards the trees,
he saw a young woman with nothing on her body but
some leaves…
THE ISLE OF VOICES
“When she heard walking she was very
frightened and looked around but –
strangely-she did not look at Keola
- Good afternoon said Keola. Please
don’t be frightened…”
THE ISLE OF VOICES
The young woman ran into the woods
and Keola followed her. He saw other
people running away and decided to go
back to Kalamake with the special
leaves. Keola told the wizard about his
adventure in the woods…
THE ISLE OF VOICES
- All this is like a dream said Kalamake.
- I don’t thing anyone saw me said Keola.
- And no one did, because we’re invisible
thanks to my magic said the wizard. But
they can hear us, so we must speak
softly…
THE ISLE OF VOICES
“…Kalamake picked up some stones
and made a circle around the mat. He
put some leaves in the middle…”
THE ISLE OF VOICES
- “Now you must burn these leaves on the
fire Kalamake said. While the leaves are
burning, I’ll do my magic. Before the
leaves become black, the same magic that
brought us here will take us back home.
Be careful and call me before the fire dies.
I don’t want to be left on this beach…”
THE ISLE OF VOICES
“As soon as the leaves starting burning,
the wizard jumped out of the circle and
began running on the beach and
picking up shells. It seemed to Keola
that the shells shone as he took
them…”
THE ISLE OF VOICES
“When Keola put the last leaves on
the fire he cried:
- Come back, Kalamake. Come
back. The leaves are almost
burnt…”
THE ISLE OF VOICES
Kalamake ran back very fast and
jumped on the mat. As soon as he
jumped on the mat the fire died and
the beach disappeared…
THE ISLE OF VOICES
“In a moment they were suddenly back
in the living room, and there were a lot
of shiny dollars on the mat. Keola
opened the windows and saw the ship in
the bay…”
The isle of voices‘
There was an island that had
problems with invisible devils’, Keola
told the chief, ‘ and the people solved
it.’
‘
How did they do that? Asked the chief.
‘
There was a tree growing in the
woods that had magic leaves,’ he said,
‘ and the devils came to get the
leaves. ……

devil: Didn't I mention that I just don't care?
tree: But think about it. My children are like me. If you kill me and my children
die, you'll have only one tree with magic leaves left, but if you let me live and
let my kids grow up, you'll have five trees with magic leaves.

D

Why would I do that?
-
I have my reasons. Besides, you’re a devil. You should be happy you’re doing this.
-
Being a devil doesn’t make me want to kill everyone.
-
Okay, that is stupid.
-
Then, how about making your magic power disappears? What if you get chopped down, so you will soon die.

You wouldn’t do that…

Oh really?

T
ree: That depends on what you’ll do to me!
D
evil: Ha-ha, I will take off one by one all of your magical leaves. That’s what I’ll do!!!
T
ree: OH MY GOD! NO! Don’t take my precious leaves!!! I need them! I can’t live without them!! Wait
a minute, everyone keeps talking about my leaves! Why is that so??
D
evil: Because, they are magical!! Why?? You didn’t know??
by Marianna Hortaria
T
ree: Ha-ha, no, you must be mistaken!! My leaves are not magical!? Do you see this tree
behind the hut??
D
evil: Yes, but why you are you asking?
T
ree: Because that’s the tree with the ‘’magical’’ leaves!!
D
evil: Oh I see… Sorry for bothering you! (The Devil walks away.)
T
ree: The nastiest of them all hah? That’s why I, a small tree, tricked you!! Go now to the tree
with the poisonous leaves!!

T
– I‘ ve heard that Keola is trying to escape from the Isle of
Voices.
D
– Let’s kill him then. He must never escape from the
Isle of Voices. I have an axe which the Cannibal chief left
here, when we attacked him.
T
– But, what if we fail to kill him. He’ll curse us all!
D
– That’s not true. One man from the tribe tried to kill Keola
and he only punched him.by

T – Do you mean that he says he’s a wizard although he isn’t?D –Yes! I attacked him when he first came to the Isle of Voices and he ran away screaming.T – Well then, I think that the best time to kill him is at night, when he’s asleep.D – Okay, let’s meet here at 11 o’clock and take our revenge!T – I’ll be waiting for you here.D- Fine! See you later then!

t
ree: Oh please! Don't cut me down.
devil: Why not? I have to cut you down because I need your magic
leaves.
tree: Oh please! I have four children.
devil: I don't care about your children.
tree: But how are they going to survive without me?
devil: Didn't I mention that I just don't care?
by Pavlos Vrettakos A1
t
ree: But think about it. My children are like me. If you kill me, my children
will die, and you'll have only one tree with magic leaves left, but if you let
me live and let my kids grow up, you'll have five trees with magic leaves.
devil: You are right. I'll let you live then.
T
ree: What a great understanding! You are incredible! God bless you!
d
evil: whaat? God?
by Pavlos Vrettakos A1
T
ree: Devil! It has been a long time since…
D
evil: Has it? I feel just like it was yesterday.
I’m here to take some of your magic
leaves!
T
ree: Never again! The forces of the forest will
prevent you from doing that.
D
evil: No! Listen. I have good intensions! Kalamake
uses all of your leaves every day to make
shiny dollars!
T
ree: Is that so? What would you suggest then?
D
evil: Why don’t we join our powers?
T
ree: Against whom?
By George Fragkogiannis A4
Devil: Kalamake of course.Tree: What can we do? He is a human after all! He can run, hide and fight at the same time. And don’t forget he’s invisible to us.Devil: He may be to you, but he is not invisible to me. I can give you the ability to see everything that is invisible.Tree: Hooray! We will catch him and then we will kill him. By George Fragkogiannis A4
