What is LEED?

Created in 2000 by the U.S. Green Building Council, LEED

is a voluntary third party certification program and the

nationally accepted benchmark for design, construction

and operation of high performance green buildings. The

program evaluates and gives points to everything from

rooftops to landscaping and alternative transportation

options. LEED is comprised of four levels (Certified,

Silver, Gold or Platinum) which measure the “greenness”

of a building. The point system for the levels is below:

• Certified 40 - 49 points• Silver 50 - 59 points• Gold 60 - 79 points• Platinum 80 points and above

It is important to note that a single piece of equipment

cannot gain points - all components of a building

contribute to an accumulated total for a final summation.

However, the individual pieces and parts of the building

contribute to points and are critical to each level in LEED.

Retail (LEED-R)

Cultivates and directs high-performance retail projects,

including but not limited to banks, restaurants, apparel,

big box, and electronics.

Homes (LEED-H)

Consensus-developed, third party-verified, voluntary

rating system which promotes the design and

construction of high-performance green homes.

Commercial Interiors (LEED-CI) Certifies high-performance green interiors that

are healthy, productive places to work; are less

costly to operate and maintain; and have a reduced

environmental footprint.

Neighborhood Development (LEED-ND)

Integrates the principles of smart growth, urbanism

and green building into the first national system for

neighborhood design.

With the right application, a ClimaCool chiller can take your project to the next LEED level. Types of LEED Rating Systems A multitude of unique projects seek LEED status, each

with differing requirements and demands. Therefore,

multiple systems were created to recognize the

individualistic needs of varying construction types

and space usages.

The following are the Certified Rating Systems:

New Construction/Major Renovation (LEED-NC)

Guides and distinguishes high-performance commercial

and institutional projects, including office buildings,

high-rise residential buildings, government buildings,

recreational facilities, manufacturing plants and labs.

Schools (LEED-S)

Recognizes the unique nature of the design and

construction of K-12 schools. It addresses issues such as

classroom acoustics, master planning, mold prevention

and environmental site assessment.

Existing Buildings Operations & Maintenance (LEED-EB)

Addresses whole-building cleaning and maintenance

issues (including chemical use), recycling programs,

exterior maintenance programs and systems upgrades.

Core and Shell Development (LEED-CS)

Covers base building elements such as structure,

envelope and the HVAC system. LEED for Core and

Shell is designed to be complementary to the LEED for

Commercial Interiors rating system.

Healthcare (LEED-HC)

Guides the design and construction of both new

buildings and major renovations, and can be applied

to inpatient, outpatient and licensed long-term

care facilities, medical offices, assisted living facilities

and medical education and research centers.

Sustainable Sites Modular chillers were initially

designed with the retrofit market in mind translating

into a minimal footprint that saves valuable space. For

example, the UCH can eliminate the need for water

heaters, boilers and

boiler accessories

while providing the

most heating capacity

per square foot in the

smallest operating

footprint. This is just

one example of the

reduced footprint of

ClimaCool chillers but

all models contribute

Site Development -

Energy and Atmosphere ClimaCool is committed

to manufacturing the highest efficiency modular

chillers available to reduce a buidling’s total energy

consumption. Buildings designed around a ClimaCool

modular chiller can help earn up to 14 points in Credit

1 Optimized Energy Performance. Most models can

be used with a geothermal loop. Geothermal loops

use the ground or ground water as a thermal energy

source to heat a building, or as a thermal energy

sink to cool a building. The temperature of the earth

below the frost line remains relatively constant which

reduces the amount of additional energy needed to

heat or cool and helps fulfill Credit 2 On-site Renewable

Energy and earn an additional 3 points. LEED requires

fundamental commissioning prerequisites are met

before any points may be earned. Additional points may

be earned for Credit 3 Enhanced Commissioning as well

as Credit 5 Measurement and Verification by utilizing the

CoolLogic Control System. The control system optimizes

There are several areas of focus that tie into each

level and point when evaluating a building for LEED

certification. This approach promotes a “whole

building” appraisal methodology. ClimaCool chillers can

help earn credit in four of the seven categories:

• Energy and Atmosphere

• Materials and Resources

• Indoor Environmental Quality

Indoor Environmental Quality The redundant

nature of modular chillers provides flexibility to obtain

specific project turndown and capacity requirements

while allowing for future expansion. This feature allows

portions of each building to be controlled separately

creating the ability to have unique set points for

different areas of the building. This ensures precise

heating, cooling and humidity controlled environments

and satisfies credit 6.2 Controllability of System -

Thermal Comfort, 7.1 Thermal Comfort - Design and 7.2

Thermal Comfort - Verification.

While ClimaCool modules do not contribute to a water

efficiency credit, utilizing factory mounted motorized

valves helps reduce water usage. For example, a

building with a typical 400 ton building load utilizing

a six module bank can reduce required water flow by

more than 90%. Our support of USGBC and ASHRAE

show our commitment to excellence. ClimaCool looks

forward to becoming your LEED and green building

solution partner.

compressor and valve staging to unload capacity

and flows to precisely match building demand. The

system also trends data and communicates chiller bank

performance to the Building Automation Systems which

helps track and minimize total building energy use.

All ClimaCool chillers utilize a micro charge of

environmentally friendly R-410A or R-134a refrigerant.

The use of brazed plate heat exchangers minimizes the

required refrigerant to approximately one pound per

ton. This meets and exceeds the refrigerant charge/

ton prerequisite and helps earn two points in Credit 4

Enhanced Refrigerant Management. Total, ClimaCool

chillers can help earn up to 24 points in the Energy and

Atmosphere category.

Materials and Resource All modules easily fit

through standard 36” doorways and onto typical

freight elevators eliminating the need for demolition

and reconstruction. This earns credits 1.1 Building

Green is Cost Effective Most builders view green as a more expensive project

and not always feasible for tight budgets. The fact is

most green buildings only have an average first cost

that is 1 - 2.5% more than the alternative. Even more

importantly, the pay back period begins immediately

after the building begins operating shrinking the green

premium. For example, the SHC onDEMAND® heat pump

and heat recovery system can cut HVAC total system

energy by 50% or more. The on-demand operation

allows any module to be indexed for heating or cooling

regardless of its position in the bank and the patent-

pending 6 header design eliminates the required space

between and external to the modules providing the

smallest operating footprint. ClimaCool was recently

named the winner of the 2012 AHR Expo Innovation

Award for Green Building for the SHC. Considering the

typical HVAC system usually uses about 60% or more

of a building’s energy, that reduction is significant. In

addition, tenants in green work environments often are

more productive, healthier and have a higher morale

while green housing is able to charge a premium, have

higher occupancy rates and enjoy the increased cash

flow that results from lower operating costs.
