SUSTAINABLE AND DIGITAL – THE FUTURE AFFORDS OPPORTUNITIES

Dear readers,

Digitalization is changing the future world of work. It poses challenges and demands new skills. But more than anything, digitalization affords opportunities to save time and resources. This issue of R-M News presents the latest digital solutions that businesses can use to streamline and accelerate workflows and boost their long-term efficiency in the process.

Spectrophotometers such as the new COLORTRONIC 12/6 are more accurate than ever thanks to the latest software and hardware. They communicate wirelessly with the workstation in the body shop and offer spray painters reliable color solutions. The mixing formulas for the manufacturers’ current colors worldwide can be searched online in color databases and then adjusted very easily. After all, when it comes to colors, R-M always has its finger on the pulse of time. R-M’s experts work in nine color labs around the world to analyze colors and develop formulas that can be used to reproduce the colors quickly and easily. The project THE CODE sponsored by R-M’s Colors & Design initiative is also dedicated to colors and a new, innovative and dynamic approach. Twelve independent design engineers from throughout Europe use R-M paints to develop individual, trail-blazing designs that can be followed in the social media.

While the training film on the new MAZDA color Soul Red Crystal is already available on youtube.com/rmpaint, R-M’s training will feature a completely innovative digital solution in the future. The info-R-M online troubleshooting platform is to be launched and will provide answers and learning material that users can access as videos. Other challenges of the future include sustainability and environmental protection. R-M is using eSense to demonstrate how renewable resources can also be used to manufacture refinish paints. Progress never stops, and R-M products are no exception to this. The mixing processes for UNO HD CP have been improved and this is indicated by a “PLUS” after the name. In addition, the Matt Shade Concept has been simplified. In this issue, the winner of the Best Painter Contest 2016, Berry Kooijman, also divulges his philosophy. And the issue picks up speed in the final pages, describing R-M’s cooperation with the Netherlands-based car manufacturer Donkervoort, the builder of sleek roadsters.

Ecology and automotive refinishing – do they go together? For more and more people, environmental awareness is a determining factor in their lives. They want the two to go hand in hand – and R-M is demonstrating how this can be successful. After all, for R-M, sustainability has already been a future-oriented topic for a long time. The responsible use of resources and environmentally friendly products was a key topic at the Best Painter Contest 2016, for instance. Now, by using renewable raw materials, R-M is playing a pioneering role in the market.

eSense

R-M leads the way in raising environmental awareness in the use of automotive refinish products

For customers today, ecological products are becoming increasingly important. What about if these customers want to apply their high environmental priorities when refinishing their vehicles? R-M would like to team up with them to take responsibility for the future. With the eSense label, the R-M brand will be offering several products in the future that are produced using renewable raw materials. Body-shops can use these products to enhance their profile and become especially attractive for environmentally aware customers.

MASS BALANCE: IT’S ALL IN THE MIXTURE

R-M’s approach is called biomass balance. The principle is comparable to the use of green electricity. The basic idea involves using renewable raw materials, such as biogas or bio-naptha, together with fossil raw materials, during production. The biomass share is mathematically allocated to certain products according to a method certified by the German Technical Supervisory Association TÜV SÜD. This means that 100% of the fossil raw materials of R-M products are replaced mathematically by renewable raw materials. There are therefore no differences in quality or properties compared to products made of fossil raw materials. The same chemical components are manufactured from renewable and

fossil raw materials. The advantage: Customers can now deliberately decide to use environmentally friendly products for the repair of their vehicle. This saves fossil raw materials and in turn, CO2. And it gives bodyshops using products with the eSense certificate a considerable advantage in the market. In addition, the more customers choose eSense, the more the R-M brand will increase the share of renewable raw materials in its production.

The production process is certified in Germany by TÜV SÜD. Six R-M product lines with the eSense label will be available starting in late 2017.

A matt finish is always something special, no matter what. It stands out and lends vehicles an exciting luxury appearance. Previously, three clearcoats and various hardeners and thinners were required to achieve the desired effects. In the new Matt Shade Concept, R-M’s experts have considerably simplified the formula. Spray painters do not need to have additional training to use the concept, because the refinishing efforts have been substantially reduced. This means that bodyshops can now achieve perfect refinishing results more quickly and easily than ever before.

EASY TO MIX, EASY TO APPLY

Up to now, for a matt finish the SATINTOP and SILICATOP clearcoats had to be mixed with a standard clearcoat such as CRYSTAL-CLEAR CP or STARTOP. With the new Matt Shade Concept, now only two clearcoats are needed: SILICATOP and the new SATIN-TOP II. For SATINTOP II, the gloss level was raised from 53 to 65 units, thus eliminating the need for an additional standard clearcoat.

Moreover, hardeners and thinners mixed in complex ratios are also no longer needed. Now, only the hardener H 2490 is required, which is precisely tailored for use with the two matt clearcoats.

The addition of a thinner is no longer necessary, which simplifies the mixing process considerably.

The new SATINTOP II and hardener H 2490 will be fully available as of October 2017. The third update of the precise new mixing formulas for the Matt Shade Concept will already be available in the Color Explorer database in September 2017.

R-M for reliably creating a satin matt finish

The secret of exciting elegance

A matt finish is both elegant and mysterious. With its understated surface, which evokes the finest satin, a vehicle becomes a real eye-catcher. And R-M’s new Matt Shade Concept is now making it even easier for spray painters to achieve a professional matt finish. With R-M’s new ambitious concept, fewer products need to be added. This means not only that the mixing process is simpler, but also that the work flows in the bodyshop are accelerated. Possible sources of error are reduced. In the end, reliable results are achieved: the perfect matt finish.

PROGRAMS FOR SUCCESS

PERFECT RESULTS IN A MATTER OF FOUR STEPS

The number of cosmetic repair jobs that bodyshops have to perform is constantly increasing. Working profitably under these conditions is a real challenge. The solution is FLEX-REPAIR, which allows everything to be done in one place. The concept offers important advantages. The vehicle must no longer be moved around during the process, since entire steps are eliminated, such as oven drying. A single employee can therefore achieve perfect results in a matter of four steps. This not only saves valuable time; the work can also be performed much more easily and stress-free.

PLANNING THE WAY TO SUCCESS

Here's how it works: An R-M consultant works with you at your bodyshop to determine whether you perform enough cosmetic damage repairs to make the installation of a FLEX-REPAIR workplace worthwhile. The consultant then determines what purchases you need to make for the investment. The various items that have been analyzed are presented in an overall assessment. The consultant then creates an implementation plan.

The R-M experts accompany every step. The consultant and your bodyshop work together to select the equipment you require and the consultant contributes his or her

experience to the process. The equipment is then installed. The bodyshop staff also receives specialized training both at the FLEX-REPAIR workplace and on commercial aspects. The project is not yet completed at this point, however, since R-M also monitors the implementation in the long term and reviews its success.

R-M: PERFECTION MADE SIMPLE

R-M brand offers innovative concepts like FLEX-REPAIR as part of its Programs For Success to ensure that their customers can achieve long-term success and work profitably in a market that is changing more rapidly all the time.

The profitable way to repair cosmetic damage

R-M’s innovative FLEX-REPAIR concept:

Everything in one place: R-M’s innovative FLEX-REPAIR concept allows you to repair cosmetic damage more flexibly – and thus even more profitably. At the FLEX-REPAIR workplace, a single employee can perform all the steps of a repair. The FLEX-REPAIR concept is part of R-M’s Programs For Success service offer. R-M’s experts support and accompany the bodyshop, starting with the analysis and continuing with planning and ultimately, with the actual implementation.

COLOR UNIVERSE

The COLORTRONIC 12/6’s new measurement technology ensures that determining colors is even easier and more reliable. Twelve geometries and six color photos generate reliable measurement results. Now, R-M’s portable spectrophotometer has been enhanced and improved to create the COLORTRONIC 12/6 – for ideal matching.

COLORTRONIC 12/6Perfect color matching!

The new digital development and R-M’s unique database set up since decades, lead to a more ease of color identification: for an invisible repair, the spray painter must precisely match the color. That’s why R-M enhanced the technology used for the new portable COLORTRONIC 12/6 spectrophoto-meter. Twelve measurement values ensure reliable results. The integrated color camera recognizes the effect in metallic / pearl finishes based on six photos. The large display offer a vide review of the measure-ment target.

TRANSMIT DATA IMMEDIATELY

The new hardware and design used for R-M’s COLORTRONIC 12/6 is not all: the spectrophotometer’s large display makes it easier to operate, too. The spray painter can make settings and transmit the measure-ment values to the workstation via WIFI, even over longer distances. The measure-ment can thus be performed immediately as soon the vehicle is dropped off, with the customer looking on. The data can be processed immediately at the computer. The device also features a temperature warning, for instance, when the vehicle has been sitting in the sun. This reduces the risk of incorrect measurement values.

PRECISELY ADJUST MIXING FORMULAS

At the workstation the data from the measurement device can then be compared with the existing R-M’s color database. The colors are presented ly as colored bars next to each other. An index indicates the percent to which the measured color matches the mixing formula, which can then be adjusted. Newly invented algo-rithms deliver even more accurate results are then used to recalculate the formula.

TRAINING PROGRAMS

In the bodyshop, situations arise that spraypainters may be unsure about. Was the mixing ratio of paint to thinner 2:1 or was it 3:1:1? What filler do you use for which substrate? Which process should you use for complex colors? Bodyshop owners have questions, too: How do I market my bodyshop? And what key performance indicators can I use to measure the performance of my work? Whether or not the questions are of a technical nature or are marketing- related, R-M’s customers will find the right answer, 24 hours a day, on the “info R-M” online platform in the future.

QUICK ANSWERS TO SPECIFIC QUESTIONS

Users do not need to search for long, because “info R-M” offers a professionally approved solution in the wink of an eye.

You can view short videos or find an e-book on a topic. The platform provides tips and tricks and you’ll find product information, technical data sheets and processes, quickly and easily via PC, tablet or smartphone. This means that you can always use exactly the medium you prefer the most to find the answer to your question.

These days, if you have a question or are looking for a solution to a problem, the web is usually the first place you look. The quickest solution is found online for general questions like, What’s better for barbecuing: gas or charcoal? How do you clean a washing machine filter? Or: What soccer cleats should you wear for a particular playing surface? There’s an answer for nearly every question out there on the web. And on the job, too, web searches are very helpful. That’s why the R-M brand will expand its website and offers its customer a digital troubleshooting platform entitled “info R-M”.

EXPERTISE COLOR UNIVERSE

How does R-M manage to offer a straightforward, easy, yet perfect color solution despite the growing number of colors? To enable R-M’s customers – bodyshops all over the world – to reproduce exactly the right color, R-M’s color experts work in nine color labs worldwide to analyze the latest color trends in the market. Based on their findings, they develop new high-quality mixing formulas for R-M’s color matching systems. They also work on individual solutions and use the results to continuously expand the color databases. In Europe, the color laboratory in Clermont-de-l’Oise, France, is one of the hubs where decisions are made.

Mission possible: Perfect color matching made easy

R-M’s color experts are continuously working on mixing formulas for the latest color trends

The future is digital, with know-how, input and therefore the database the crucial elements. R-M’s portable spectrophoto-meters have been serving as indispensable tools for bodyshops everywhere for over 20 years. They help determine the right color for the particular refinishing job. R-M’s new COLORTRONIC 12/6 builds on these decades of experience. Even quicker and easier to operate, it delivers even more reliable results thanks to its state-of-the-art measurement technique. The COLOR TRONIC 12/6 was developed in R-M’s color labs.

THE “COLOR UNIVERSE” IS EXPANDING

During vehicle refinishing, one of the spray painter’s most challenging tasks involves color identification. It requires a good eye for colors and reliable technology. After all, no two reds are alike. Or the color of the original finish may have changed as the result of external influences such as sunlight. In this case, the spray painter has to adjust the

color individually. R-M’s color matching systems make this possible. But they have to be kept up-to-date at all times, in terms of both technical standards as well as the latest trend colors.

R-M’s color labs are responsible for this too. There, the car manufacturers’ latest trend colors are analyzed and new color solutions are developed based on the findings. The mixing formulas are then used to update the databases of the color matching systems. After all, new trends are evolving all the time, featuring brilliant colors or new effect pigments that make the finish sparkle or that play with color changes.

SOLVING CUSTOMERS’ COLOR PROBLEMS

R-M’s customers can also ask the experts specific questions. To do this, they can contact the color information service, which they can use to send in paint samples or coated car parts, for instance. The experts

then analyze them more closely, using a microscope to determine the composition of the pigments in special colors, for example. If the color already exists in the database, they find the matching mixing formula or adapt it even more precisely if necessary. Or the experts create a completely new mixing formula, which is necessary in around 25% of all cases.

In addition to the technology, the experts’ knowledge and years of practical experience are the most valuable material in R-M’s color labs. The specially trained colorists check the reproduction of the colors and variations in practice as well. They mix the compo-nents, apply the paint, analyze it under differ-ent kinds of lighting and compare it with the sample. Using software and pretended algorithms, they fine-tune the color until it is absolutely perfect. Only then are the data saved and the sample is sent back to the customer. The new variations are then added to the database.

PROGRESS THROUGH DEVELOPMENT

The continuous improvement of R-M’s color matching system is a never-ending process. But it yields the progress that can be passed on to customers through new generations of color matching tools. The new COLORTRONIC 12/6 spectrophotometer, for instance, is easier than ever to operate. And the software also works with a newly pretended algorithm that can calculate the color matching even more to the target and in so doing, further improve the quality of the matching. Finally to confirm the perfect color matching made easy, the display of the new COLORTRONIC 12/6 allows to see the surface and so approve the correct place for the measurement. The spraypainter can view the anticipated results of the refinishing job at a glance.

EXPERTISE COLOR UNIVERSE

According to Kooijman, fixing up cars was always his dream job. He trained to become a spray painter at the Mondriaan Regional Training Center in The Hague, Netherlands. He has now worked as the head spray painter at Autoschade Herstel Verweij bodyshop in The Hague for seven years. And he loves working in the spray booth. In the future, he would like to extend his expertise and get to know the business-related aspects of the job.

The victory at the R-M Best Painter Contest 2016 was his biggest success to date. “I too k part in the contest because I wanted to measure my skills against those of my fellow spray painters,” he said. The experience was very positive for him, he said, because the different challenges made the contest so exciting. And that’s what he enjoys about the job. “In our daily work, we’re faced with new

challenges every day,” he said. “I decided to be confident and tackle the tasks and not let my nerves get to me.” On the job, the crucial moment is when you select the right color, he said. To do this, a spray painter has to be particularly attentive. When choosing the right color, you have to take your time and not allow yourself to be rushed. “But R-M’s color matching tools are really useful for finding the right color,” he said. “I use the COLOR EXPLORER ONLINE database and have the COLORTRONIC spectrophotometer available to

me if I need it. If I still can’t decide which color is the right one, I can even call the R-M color experts in Maarssen, Netherlands, and ask for help.”

Kooijman uses the COLORTRONIC spectro-photometer in his everyday work particularly to double-check his color choice. He can’t imagine life in the bodyshop without the digital tools

provided by R-M. Without the online color database, for instance, or the possibility to save certain formulas for the future, he couldn’t do his work, he admitted.

When it comes to the spraypainting techniques themselves, they have become second nature for him, he said, and they were easy to call up in the contest. “But the next task involved ‘reading’ a color, and that was way harder. I was supposed to look at the sample of a formula where a few drops of a color were left out or were added and was supposed to say what they were. But in the end, I was very satisfied with my performance.”

Challenges? “Bring them on!”A chat with R-M Best Painter Contest 2016 winner Berry Kooijman

When asked about his favorite part of his job, spray painter Berry Kooijman put it like this: “The fact that a vehicle that comes to us completely bent up and dented leaves our bodyshop looking like it’s brand new after the repair.” Kooijman, who hails from the Netherlands, represented his country in the international final of the R-M Best Painter Contest 2016 in Clermont, France. His outstanding performance convinced the jury and earned him first place in the contest.

COLOR UNIVERSE EXPERTISE

Kooijman also considers R-M’s new online training to be a useful tool for learning new techniques. The R-M Best Painter Context 2016 finalists had the opportunity to test the training, which has been expanded to include the new training platform info.rmpaint.com. “There are certain areas where you have to have practical experi-ence,” he said. “But there are other things you can learn by watching

a video, like how to use certain products.”

Among the best experiences in Clermont, Kooijman said, was meeting so many people who all work in the same profession as he does and seeing that they all use the same methods – basically all over the world. At home, his friends and family were very enthusiastic about his win. “They all knew more or less what I do. But now they also know that I’m good at my job,” he said. Kooijman’s victory was also covered on Dutch

TV and radio.

Thanks to the media spotlight, there’s never a dull moment at the bodyshop. But for Kooijman, that’s just fine. After all,

someday he hopes to manage his own bodyshop and before that, plans to gather much more refinishing experience. For high school graduates considering their next step, Kooijman recommends becoming a spraypainter. It’s an especially rewarding job for people who enjoy working with their hands, and of course for those who enjoy improving the appearance of cars.

The young spraypainter had a practical tip to share: “Before you refinish a vehicle, you should know what materials you need to carry out the task. And you should lay out everything on the table in front of you, ready to go. That’s essential, not just when you’re competing in a contest, but during your everyday work in the bodyshop, too.”

PARTNERS

Strong partnership with R-M!

The Zurich-based Emil Frey Group, with some 650 locations, has been Europe’s largest car dealer since spring 2017. The Emil Frey Group and R-M have been trusted partners for years. The successful collaboration with Emil Frey AG, Kriens subsidiary, in Switzerland attests to this.

A partnership on equal terms

Emil Frey AG and R-M

The building of the Emil Frey AG Kriens subsidiary is situated in a top location in the Sternmatt industrial park in the town of Kriens near Lucerne with a view of nearby Mount Pilatus. The company headquarters features a modern showroom for visitors. “In addition to our business with new cars and our sales of Opel, Suzuki and KIA, we offer the whole gamut of garage and bodyshop services,” said company manager René Schnarwiler. “We have a staff of 21 working in administration, sales and the bodyshop, including two trainees. At our bodyshop, we repair all makes and models and we offer all-around service for our three featured makes and.”

The subsidiary has been located in Kriens since 1998. The company values high- quality, impeccable service. “Our customer loyalty is extremely important for us. We have customers who have been true to us for many years,” Scharwiler said.

STRONG PARTNERSHIP WITH R-M

For refinishing damage to paintwork, this Emil Frey subsidiary also relies on the premium product on the market. “We have relied on R-M refinish products for over 10 years,” explained bodyshop manager Sebastian Schöpp. “We use the ONYX HD waterborne paint line and the UNO HD Line single-layer system.”

When asked about product quality, Schöpp replied, “It’s fantastic. The finish quality is excellent and the sprayability is super. For the clearcoats, we use the new Glossclear. We also use the new UV Primer Filler. They are both very high quality.”

At the last race of the Blancpain Endurance Series 2017 on the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Lorenz Frey, team manager and racing driver with the Emil Frey Racing Team, met with Ramesse Florean, managing director of R-M Autoreparaturlacke Switzerland.

TWO POWERFUL PARTNERS – R-M TO BECOME SPONSOR OF EMIL FREY RACING TEAM IN 2018

From 2018 R-M is new sponsor of the Emil Frey Racing Team for three years – across Europe. The Emil Frey Group and R-M have already worked together as partners for many years, committed to premium quality, teamwork, dynamism and a spirit of partnership.

PRODUCT OFFER

Everything is even easier now: Instead of two mixing clears, now only one mixing clear is needed: SC 08. R-M’s new topcoat, UNO HD CP PLUS, like R-M’s new clearcoats, are now mixed in an easy 300:100:100 ratio. In addition, for the VOC-compatible UNO HD CP PLUS paint line, exactly the same hardeners (H 2550 / H 2500 / H 2520) and thinners (R 2100 / R 2200 / R 2300) were used as for all other clear-coats in R-M’s new generation. This saves working time and helps improve the organization of your bodyshop.

Select R-M customers have already tried out the new SC 08 mixing clear. In a blind test, customers compared the new innovative product with its proven predecessor. In the end, they were absolutely convinced of the results of SC 08 in the comparison test. The newly developed SC 08 mixing clear not only simplifies mixing processes; it offers other benefits as well. For instance, the topcoat’s properties during application have been significantly improved, especially regarding the applicability and overspray absorption.

PERFECT SURFACES, HIGHER GLOSS

The topcoat’s performance has also been improved with respect to drying, flow and gloss. With the SC 08 mixing clear, the topcoat dries harder, which renders surfaces completely smooth and highly glossy. The performance of the previous versions, SC 07 and SC 17, has thus not only been replaced, but with SC 08 was in fact surpassed.

In the end, you have absolutely perfect refinishing results.

The formulas with SC 08 mixing clear will be available in the R-M Color Explorer under UNO HD

CP PLUS starting in September. The mixing formulas in the UNO HD CP line, which use SC 07 and SC 17, will still be available in the database, however.

R-M’s long-proven topcoat line for refinishing direct-gloss and solid colors, UNO HD CP, has added a suffix to its name. It is now called UNO HD CP PLUS. So what does the “plus” stand for? For even easier mixing processes and improved product properties. With SC 08, a high-performance mixing clear has been developed that replaces the combination of SC 07 and SC 17.

Paint systems from R-M set the right tone for design concepts for electric vehicles

E-Mobility Design

Covestro, the manufacturer of high-tech polymer materials for the automotive and other industries, has already presented an innovative concept for electric cars that incorporates the latest trends in external design. The concept car was also occupy pride of place at the Covestro stand at the European Coatings Show 2017 in Nuremberg and around the world. An eye-catching presence is ensured by a specially developed paint formulation based on the color and design expertise of BASF’s Coatings division and its premium R-M brand. The formulation incorporates the ONYX HD waterborne paint from R-M.

The innovativeness and technical refinement of this vehicle concept is underlined by the exclusive ‘Verbosian Orange’ color tone. “The effect of the color orange is to draw the attention and create a sens e of presence. At the same time, the color is warm and passionate, expressing the energy theme. To create a special optical effect, we have used a metallic luminous orange, which ideally harmonizes with the black and anthracite gray accessories and really grabs the attention,” is how Mark Gutjahr, head of Automotive Color Design Europe at BASF, describes the effect of the basecoat. The paint system fulfills all requirements with respect to sustainability, efficiency and

performance and is comparable with modern polyurethane production line paints. The pigmented waterborne coating is protected by a transparent clearcoat based on polyurethane precursor materials from Covestro. This rapidly hardens even at low temperatures, creates optimum paint adhesion and – thanks to the low viscosity – ensures excellent flow properties.

The finished coating polishes up well and offers a high gloss. “It underlines the total effect of the concept car,” says Marc Schreiber, Marketing manager for refinish paints at Covestro.

The developments implemented in the design concept open up new approaches for the attractive design of comfortable, functional and energy-efficient cars. The focus is on lightweight designs using plastics. The use of these materials increas-es the range of electric cars and reduces the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of gasoline-powered vehicles. However, this places new demands on the paintwork which the worldwide design team of BASF’s Coatings division addressed in its annual Automotive Color Trends publication.

Dutch automaker Donkervoort is a manufacturer of hand-built roadsters that look great both on the road and on the racetrack. The stylish speedsters feature a low weight that lends them momentum and speed, thanks to a combination of a tubular frame with carbon fiber, also called hybrid chassis. For this purpose, it requires a finish that is both transparent and robust. The specialist for this is the R-M brand.

WHETHER ON THE ROAD OR ON THE RACETRACK: FULL-BLOWN DYNAMICS

That’s just one area where the two partners will be joining forces to find innovative solutions. Reducing weight is another basic pillar enabling dynamic driving. That’s why Donkervoort uses R-M’s innovative paints for its new vehicles exclusively and also recommends them for refinishing. This means that the two partners work together to develop new standards for the refinishing processes at its own and at attached bodyshops.

The two partners also plan to cooperate by offering VIP trips and joint marketing appearances and by presenting R-M colors. The colors will be on display both at the Donkervoort headquarters showroom in Lelystad, Netherlands, and at the Classic Remise in Düsseldorf, Germany.
