With right sides
facing down, overlap
Cheek piece on the
Mouth piece, lining
the long edge of the
Cheek piece with the
2 notches marked on
the Mouth piece. Pin
or stitch in place.
(You are overcasting single layers to give the edge a finish.)
Repeat to make 2.

Open the face
section and Mouth
/Filter sections so
that each is facing
right side up. Flip
one over onto the
other so that right
sides are together.
Clip or pin together
then sew around
Turn right side out. Press with an iron using a setting that
matches your fabric selection.
Fold each 1” x 5” knit strip wrong sides
together and sew the long edges then
overcast the edge. Repeat. (This creates 2 –
½” x 5” strips that will make up the Ear Loop pieces.)
Pin to wrong side of Face piece created in
step 4 at sides within seam allowance (green
marks on Face piece).
Overcast the edges. This is the finished look
after this step. The left image is the interior
mouth/filter side of the mask. The right image
is the exterior side of the mask.
On the blue Filter/Pocket area of
the mask, on the top nose edge,
top stitch ½” from the edge
between the pocket section. This
creates a rod pocket for the nose
wire to slide in. Insert wire to
shape mask around nose. Insert
wire. Stitch rod pocket closed.
Completed mask.
(See optional ties
mentioned on page 5
with the pattern
pieces.)
We realize that one size
will not fit all. The ties will
help with fit problems.
Double sided tape on the
inside filter pocket area will
give a greater seal.

Optional Tie: If the mask does not fit snugly, cut a 1”x30” strip of woven cotton fabric
(like a bed linen) to use as a tie. After the mask is on the head, the 1”x30” strip would
thread through the ear loops and tie behind the head. Use 2 ties, if necessary, to keep
the mask secure on the head. They would be tied like a disposable surgical mask
would. There are other options, like a 3-inch piece of ½ inch elastic with a medium to
large button sewn at each end. Please ear loops around buttons.
Optional Tape: To get the most secure fit, use double sided tape on the interior
Mouth/Filter side, along the edges of the Mouth/Filter part of the mask. This will need to
be replaced often.
Alternative Wire: Flat copper box wire found at packaging stores, or on-line packaging
stores like U-Line. Jewelry Wire. 18 Gauge Copper Wire. Needs to be very flexible.
Filter Ideas: 2 layers of cotton t-shirt material (can be sewn into the seam and
laundered with the mask. Vacuum cleaner bag. Blue shop towels. The filter needs to
stop small molecules and be breathable. There is much research on-line.
