Targoviste, first attested in 1396, in the Travel Accounts of Johannes Schiltberger, became the capital of the Wallachian voivodship, probably during the reign of Mircea cel Batran, when the Royal Court was built. Vlad III Dracula later added the Chindia Tower, now a symbol of the city. In 1597 Mihai Viteazul fought and won a decisive battle against the Ottoman Empire in Târgovişte.Târgovişte was the site of the trial and execution of Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife Elena in December 1989.

Romania. The fortress is situated on

the border between Transylvania

Suceviţa is the largest and also the last built of the painted monasteries of Bucovina. It was built in 1581 by the Bishop of Rădăuţi, Gheorghe Movila. It is situated in the village of the same name in the foothills of the Carpathians west of Rădăuţi. The monastery is surrounded by thick, fortified walls built by the Voievod Ieremiah Movila, brother of Bishop Gheorghe. Both the Movila brothers are buried at the monastery. Sucevita Monastery was first inhabited by monks in 1582. During the communist era, only nuns over 50 were allowed to stay at Sucevita. Today it is a nun monastery, the sisters living a simple life in daily prayers, and growing their land. The museum of the monastery holds precious objects, among which manuscripts and embroideries donated by the Movila family.

At 946 m high, Saint Ana Lake is

the only Romanian lake which has

a volcanic origin. It has an easel

shaped form. Almost distilled, the

water is considered to be the

purest in this world, but because

of its leak in mineral salts, it is not

drinkable.
