TABLE OF CONTENTS

Inspired by the Ashanti people of the region and the chosen client, a professor and their family, this mud-house both embraced the traditions of the people and offered all the modern amenities. There is a stigma in the region that mudhouses are poorly made so great care was taken to create a family dwelling that was not only structurally sound, but sustainable for future gen-erations. Rammed earth was the main building meth-od, as well as timber from the forests south of the city.

This project was a competition hosted by the NKA Foundation and was completed with a team of two. The design problem addressed was design-ing a mudhouse for the Ashanti region of Ghana that meets the needs of the client as well as tran-scends the stigma attached to mudhomes in the area.

This project was a group project that took three different lo-cations (NYC, Denver, and LA) and applied the same FF and E. Each location has a different floor plan through which each member of the group applies the concept and finishes.

“Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket” painting by Whistler, circa 1875, was the driving force and inspiration behind the restaurant Nocturne. The idea of darkness with simple bursts of light, is what directed our ambition to use light as a teaser. The restaurants’ luminous quality attracts patrons’ curiosity and helps to draw them in from the street. Just as fireworks in the painting create a sense of clarity in the otherwise muted night sky, our restaurant has large-scale glass pane garage doors that enable passersby to see through each restaurant to the illuminated “backyard” ar-eas. The use of ambiguity combined with eye-catching lighting is a principle design aesthetic in each restaurant, as it helps to three-dimensionally convey the very con-cept and inspiration that the restaurant was founded on.

The architectural integrity of the spaces was very important for us and helped shape the simple yet rich palette of materials. Drawing from the essence of each location, we chose to focus on the use of concrete, wood, and iron to draw together attri-butes of the three very different locations. We chose to use unique materials such as translucent concrete to help further the idea of ambiguous figures and move-ment in the space and repurposed wood to bring life and dimension to the interiors.

The design of BRIX’s Canadian flagship store was inspired by the principles of pluralism, specifically “energetic engagement with diversity”, “actively seeking understanding across lines of differences”, and “coexistence”. From these main principles, the concept terms “transparency”, “movement”, “energetic engagement”, “reflection” and “balance” were used to guide the design. Transparency and reflection were implemented both by materials used such as glass and high gloss materi-al finishes and by an open space plan. “Energetic Engage-ment” was implemented through the use of 3 dimensional geometric shapes and bright pops of color in an otherwise neutral color palette. Movement was translated through the use of color gradation. Balance was implemented through a balanced floor plan that was mirrored on the ceiling plan.

This project was a group project that was a competition for RDI. RDI gave set guidelines for the space which in-cluded a preexisting, historically renovated space in Can-ada that has 2 stories and was for high end accessories.

Brix storefront mixes geometric shapes with brix’ original inspiration: bricks. The thermal glass offers both energy efficiency in cana-da’s cold climate and transparency which allows for views into the interior of brix.

This elevation shows a 3 form sculpture used to dis-play brix’ line of handbags. The neon geometric shapes against a neutral background showcases not only the handbags but the concept behind the design as well.

The men’s lounge blends sofistication with an exciting color palette. Geometric shapes are used to represent the concept while bright yellow is used to bring energy into the space.

conceptThe inspiration for this design was community engage-ment. This space was designed to be driven by the commu-nity that would use it. From the initial stage, which is a mu-ral painted by the children of the community to the wireless mesh network which is installed and run by the community.

This project was a group project for I D E C ’s Student Design Competition 2012. Students were asked to design some-thing that could benefit communities in South Africa that have been affected by AIDS. Our group chose to provide a space that allowed rural communities access to an internet connection that can be easily installed and maintained. The space itself was designed so that the community could build it themselves with materials that were readily available to them.

Pitch was inspired by the way the brain processes music. Music is one of the only known stimulants that can utilize almost every part of the brain simultaneously, thus the terms connect, grow, and flow became the concept for the space. This inspiration is implemented through the use of flowing curves that effortlessly connect the space much in the same way the brain receives music. The materials that are used are glass and wood to convey a natural, organic and translucent imagery due to the natural brain process. There was the use of glass, both clear and opaque to allow for an ambiguous feel. The sense of ambiguity was important because when listening to music the sounds and meanings are often not fully understood and misinterpreted. In some places of the restaurant the view of the art is just out of sight or halfway out of sight so it forces the clients to move through the space and to “process” the stimulant by flowing through another space.

flowing curves were used on the mezza-nine as well as the bar and front facade to create a connected feel as though one peice of the design flowed into another effortlessly, much like the process the brain goes through when listening to music.

  This design is inspired by several aspects of Japanese Zen gardens. The elements of balance through the re-flection of water, simple clean lines created by sand and wood, as well as contrast of colors and texture will guide the design. Contrast of texture and shape, as well as sim-ple clean lines and symmetrical balance will guide the ar-chitectural elements; the organization will be implement-ed through symmetrical balance and simple clean lines. The palette will be guided by contrast of color and texture.
