TRANSCRIPT

Film is so much more than a recording, it’s a strong and vivid link to our history

WHEN THE PICTURES PLAY, WE’RE INSTANTLY TRANSPORTED BACK TO A MOMENT IN TIME, NEVER TO BE REPEATED. LEADERS SHAKE HANDS WITH CROWDS, SPORTSMEN AND WOMEN CROSS FINISHING LINES, THE HERITAGE OF NATIONS IS CAPTURED: ALL IN REAL-TIME…

As well as the large notes, the big proud occasions that have defined the world, there are the simple day to day notes: children playing, families embracing, men and women smiling, holidays in the sun - all images share an equal place in the archives of our history.

Film is one of our greatest cultural treasures and when it’s lost or damaged it can never be replaced, it’s cast away upon the winds of time. It’s our duty to ensure that memories and historical footnotes are preserved and retained for our children and generations to come, who’ll be able to recall an eternal record of how we lived and loved.

At R3store studios we understand its real value, so we’re meticulously working on a worldwide mission to restore film to its former glory and update it for a new digital global audience hungry for knowledge of the past.

Leaders shake hands with crowds, sportsmen and women cross finishing lines, the heritage of nations is captured; all in real-time

R3store studios was born out of acquiring the BBC’s restoration and archive division. Our highly skilled team of craftspeople is headed up by our COO, Jo Griffin, a recognised expert and industry leader in this specialist field and it’s her vision and experience that has resulted in R3store studio’s progressive methods and technologies that set us apart from our competitors.

Working with national and regional archives, museums, universities and galleries around the world, R3store studios has a deep understanding of the responsibilities of working with archive and historical footage similar to, perhaps, archivists refreshing fine art works or archaeologists transporting important finds.

INSPECTION A full survey is conducted into the suitability of our techniques, to establish how your media will respond to treatment and transfer before even begin attempting restorative work.

FILM CLEANING Using ultrasonic technologies, the surface of the film is carefully freed from foreign particles and build ups of material that compromises the quality and picture of the film.

DIGITISATIONWe use the industry leading Scanity HDR system to transfer all film formats into digital archives. With unique functionality that manages degraded, irregular and even damaged film, this equipment offers the highest quality transfer technology currently available.

GRADINGUsing the Nucoda Grading system, we are able to ingest any file format up to 4K and grade frame by frame then output again to any file format.

ARCHIVINGR3store is able to supply you with restored digital footage in your preferred format, fully catalogued, indexed and appropriately labelled to aid simple future retrievals. This includes uploading onto different digital formats and protected deliveries.

ACCESSIBILITYWith the wide variety of internet attached and cloud based storage, we can best advise on how to present the restored media to a wider audience, turning your archive into a more accessible archive of history.

Our process is illustrated on our Workflow and Services Presentation and includes:

Some Things We’re Doing and We’ve Done One of the most important tasks undertaken by R3store has been the prestigious Unlocking Film Heritage project. Commissioned by the British Film Institute, this task centres upon the monumental task of restoring, preserving and digitising over 10,000 pieces of nationally important film. Working with a number of collections and museums, each piece of footage captures a lost piece of an essentially British legacy. Prior to the creation of R3store, the team began working on the project and have now worked on over 3000 titles and continue to do so.

However, it was not only the skill and technique exhibited by Gerry, Richard and Andrew that led them to become the go to people for the project. In working with many of the smaller archives, communication, delivery dates and service became amongst the most important demands. Due to a clear and defined process, this is where the team stood out from the other restoration houses involved in the project.
