introductionWelcome to Race 4 Peace Congo 2015.
This year, we celebrate.
We celebrate five consecutive years of racing for peace in congo.and what we celebrate most is christ being glorified in congo and us.
• over 2000 witnesses praying and suffering for peace• over half a million dollars raised to activate Village peace
committees (Vpcs)• nearly 800 trained Village peace committee members and growing• m23 militia disbanded peacefully• uncharacteristic period of relative calm in north kivu• race participants experience healings• Faith in god to redeem brokenness in us and our world deepening
We’re not naïve. real challenges remain.but neither are we naïve to the real changes now occurring.
Hope is rising…in congo.Hope is rising…in us.
So this year, we race to celebrate this hope that is rising.
celebration is actually a form of resistance to anti-kingdom powers still trying to sow death-inspired seeds in congo. It’s that moment in a bas-ketball game when the crowd begins to sing Na-Na-Na-Na, Na-Na-Na-Na, Hey-Hey-Hey…Goodbye, that the opposition knows it will lose. but our celebration song is the praise of our lord christ jesus being glorified in congo who taught us to sing by faith, Sasa Ni Wakati wa Amani (Now is the Time for Peace).
the opposition is losing its grip. Hope is rising.and when we celebrate the kingdom ground being gained, it’s like blowing
Co n g o P e a c e b u i l d i n g . co m 5Co n g o P e a c e b u i l d i n g . co m 5
the breath of god over the freshly-lit flames of hope beginning to burn in congo.
make no mistake: these fires of real hope will grow and bring the beautiful light of peace.
and the darkness, will not overcome it.
just as in years past, we ignite these fires through our prayers and willing-ness to stand in some way with those who are suffering. but this year, we focus our prayers on celebrating what god has done over these years of our sustained prophetic witness in jesus’ name.
so, for the 16 weeks leading up to race day 2015, this prayer journal will help you to celebrate as resistance. each week is a different Hope is Rising story to celebrate, directly from Vpc leaders in congo! these stories were documented in 2014 as a part of a study funded by the united states Insti-tute of peace to verify the effectiveness of the Vpc movement.
some may be surprised by how seemingly simple and mundane the documented conflicts are that local peacebuilders are resolving in their villages. It’s helpful to understand that at the grassroots level, conflicts start relatively small and domestic—marital, land, business. but when these kinds of disputes occur between different ethnic groups in eastern congo, historically, no viable mechanism existed to help people resolve these disputes in a way that didn’t lead to a spiral of more and greater conflict. but praise god, the Vpcs are now that new mechanism—owned and operated by the community themselves!
these stories show god’s kingdom power at work and celebrating them only invites more of it; signaling to the anti-kingdom that their power is waning and Hope is rising.
so you are invited to pray and journal with celebration and hope in this turning-point fifth year of race for peace congo. our prayers are being answered. peace is coming to congo.
Listen to the voices of our Congolese friends as
you read the following stories. Let the message
of hope that rings through their words
motivate you to pray— for them and for us.

He doesn’t allow her to visit their only son mugisho. the conflict started when jacques’ new wife had a baby and mugisho got his high school certifi-cate. mr. jacques used the two events to verbally abuse sifa whenever they met because they live in the same village. during the mediation, sifa said that she is and will remain mu-gisho’s mother. jacques maintained that whenever mugisho is visited by his mother, mugisho becomes dis-obedient towards him. He conclud-ed that sifa advises him to disobey his father, but sifa disagreed. she promised to ask her son to respect and obey his father. realizing that he would not succeed to separate the mother and his son, jacques accepted the suggestion.

Théophile Mubawa
Week Six: Trust July 12-18
HoPe is RisinG stoRy:
mr. Fidel kanika and noella nasashi were engaged to be mar-
ried in 3 months time. mr. kanika paid the dowry to his future
family in-law. a month before their
wedding ceremony, mr. kanika
complained against another young
boy (named théophile mubawa) that
he was courting his fiancée miss
nasashi, because mr. kanika was al-
ways seeing mr. mubawa and miss
nasashi together all the time in the
pastoral activities of their church.
When mr. kanika came to re-claim
the dowry and call off the marriage, the
family of nasashi called the Vpc mem-
bers on this issue. the Vpc members
organized a mediation where mr. kanika, mr. mubawa and miss
nasashi were invited. It was found out that mr. mubawa is a
choir leader in which choir nasashi is
a member, and there was no intimacy
or romantic relationship between the
two. In this encounter, mr. kanika
was convinced that there is nothing
of love between noella and théo-
phile. Hence, the marriage proceeded
and today they are happily married.
