OUR CAMPUS WAS CLOSED, OUR MISSION CONTINUED

Students bring flowers and crown the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary for the virtual May Crowning.

Junior, Luke delivers meals to health-care workers at St. Luke’s Hospital.

While schools across the country scrambled to adapt to the challenges of online learning, Notre Dame students and faculty were well-equipped to handle the crisis. Earlier in the Fall of 2019, thanks to the generosity of our donors, many of whom are alumni, we had just rolled out our 1 to 1 Chromebook initiative, ensuring that all students at the High School had a school issued Chromebook. Many teachers had already been using such platforms as Google Classroom in their classes, which facilitated a smooth transition to online learning. Classes continued remotely for the remainder of the 2020 school year.

In addition to academic preparedness during the pandemic, Notre Dame contin-ued to be present spiritually by providing virtual prayer resources, encouraging videos from faculty and staff during Holy Week, providing access to virtual and live streamed Masses with Fr. Joe Salerno at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, to even hosting a virtual May Crowning ceremony, where several students and staff gath-ered in a socially distant outdoor prayer service, where the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary was crowned, a time honored tradition in the Catholic faith. The event was live streamed on social media so that all could watch from the safety of their homes.

True to our mission as a Catholic school, several ND students took it upon them-selves to make a difference in our local community during these challenging times. One of our eleventh-grade students, Luke, organized a fundraiser to pro-vide meals for healthcare workers at St. Luke’s Hospital during the pandemic. Luke cited his goal of working in the health field as his inspiration. Hailey, a soph-omore, made hundreds of facemasks for those in need of them. Hailey combined her love of sewing and her new-found free time during the course of the pan-demic to make a big difference. One group of Juggler siblings organized a food drive, along with their Boy Scout Troop 14, to collect for the hungry during this crisis. The boys put flyers in the neighbor’s mailboxes, collected donations, and then delivered them to local food pantries.

Marian Club Dinner & Brother More,CFX Sports Hall of Fame Induction Postponed

Individuals chosen to be recognized this year by Notre Dame Marian Club are Mary Kate Emdin Rinko, St. Francis de Sales Class of 1954 and Brother Leonard Wojtanowski, CFX. ND ’63. Due to COVID-19, the dinner has been postponed to Friday, April 30, 2021 at Hart’s Hill Inn. The Marian Club is an organization whose sole purpose is to assist Notre Dame families with tuition aid. Membership dues, the dinner, and the sale of memo-rial bricks are the only source of funds. If you would like to become a member, information can be obtained at notredameutica.org. The dinner will also serve as the induction ceremony to the Brother More, CFX Sports Hall of Fame.

Brother More, CFX Sports Hall of Fame honorees to include: Rick Zimmer, Class of 1970, Football; Bobby Cer-minaro, Class of 1988, Football/Baseball; Captain George Wood (Posthumous), Class of 1988, Football; Lisa Reeves, Class of 1994, Cross Country; CJ Cantil, Class of 2000, Basketball; Kevin Roberts, Class of 2000, Football, Basketball, and Baseball; Coach Pete Curley, long-time assistant basketball coach and “Mr. do anything” for Notre Dame. Congratulations to all honorees.

Senior SendoffThe class of 2020 was celebrated amidst a clamoring of car horns, bells, and applause as several members of the faculty and administration surprised each senior with a parade. Cars carefully decorat-ed in blue and gold with well-wishes written in window paint, some with balloons, signs, streamers, and more. The parade route, led by the Notre Dame vans, covered the homes of all 46 seniors, stretching as far from the high school campus as Little Falls, Deansboro, Rome, Poland, and beyond, culminating in a near 12-hour expedition. Each senior was met with cheers and greeted with a small gift—a lawn sign and balloons and were photographed in front of their sign with their families.

It was only the first of several events planned to recognize the achievements of the class of 2020 amidst the uncertainty of the COVID-19 Pandemic. When it became apparent that a swift return to school was not on the horizon, and that many of the cherished and time-honored Notre Dame traditions would not be possible, planning immediately began to give the class of 2020 the sendoff they deserved.

A special drive thru yearbook, cap and gown pick up event was hosted by DJ Roscoe Red from Kiss FM. As a cheering faculty and staff lined the front driveway of the school, students pulled through sev-eral stations, where they received their yearbooks, full of encouraging and congratulatory messages left by the faculty and staff, as well as their caps and gowns for graduation.

With the loosening of restrictions at the end of June, previously put in place by the Governor’s office in response to the spread of COVID-19, and a new allowance of 150 people for graduation ceremonies held throughout the state of New York, the class of 2020 finally had their day. A graduation was held on Friday, July 17, 2020 for the very first time on Ben Rizzo Field. Graduates sported special “ND Class of 2020” face masks, and some, even wore face masks with the logo of the college they plan to attend in the Fall. Notre Dame Jr./Sr. High School

Notre Dame Year in Review 2019-2020ERIN WAKE CELEBRATED

AS AN OUTSTANDING EDUCATOR

Mrs. Erin Wake was honored with the “Outstanding Educator Award” from the Genesis Group. Mrs. Wake, a life-long Juggler, is a graduate of the Notre Dame Class of 2009 and currently serves as the Math Department Chair. Mrs. Wake’s passion for education is apparent the moment you step foot in her classroom and her dedication to Notre Dame and her students far exceeds her classroom walls. Congratulations to Mrs. Erin Wake.

FOOTBALL FIELD RENAMED IN HONOR OF FORMER COACH

The Notre Dame Football Field was rededicated in honor of former Coach, Ben Rizzo, on Friday, September 13, 2020 to mark 50 years since the 1969 Notre Dame Football Team went undefeated under his leadership. Alumni from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s football teams gathered at Victor Mc-Carthy, CFX Stadium at Notre Dame Jr./Sr. High School to celebrate the milestone.

STUDENT COUNCIL

For the first time in several years, Notre Dame held elections for student council. Under the guidance of several faculty advisors, the newly founded council’s by-laws were created and approved along with criteria and stan-dards for applicants. Elections were held in the Fall of 2019 with the elec-tion of several student council officers and representatives for each grade level. One of the very first projects of the newly formed council was the creation of a Winter Spirit Week to celebrate those student-athletes who participate in Winter sports. The Winter Spirit Week included Christmas themed activities and dress down days, which concluded with a spirited pep-rally.

SOCK OUT CANCER

Notre Dame Schools joined schools across the Diocese of Syracuse by par-ticipating in National Sock Out Cancer Day. Students sported multi-color socks, purchased to recognize the enormous emotional and financial strain and other challenges cancer brings to patients and their families. Sock Out Cancer, LLC, is a nonprofit initiative whose mission is to assist financially distressed cancer patients and their families pay for non-medical necessi-ties such as food, transportation, and housing so patients can focus their energy on fighting cancer.

JUGGLER CLASSIC CHAMPIONS

The Lady Jugglers took home the gold at the Juggler Classic with a final vic-tory over Cazenovia in a close game. Junior Ajla Sejdic scored a team-high 23 points in the championship game. The final score was 52-48. Addition-ally, the Boys came in third place with an exciting win over Bishop O’Hara.

ELEMENTARY STUDENTS TAKE THE COURT AT SU

The 6th grade basketball team of Notre Dame Elementary School had the oppor-tunity to go on the court at the Carrier Dome when the Orange played Niagara. They were on the court for the National Anthem and scrimmaged on the court at half time in front of 17,000 people. The boys did great and were very excited!

NJROTC AWARDED DISTINGUISHED UNIT WITH ACADEMIC HONORS

For the fourth consecutive year, Notre Dame’s NJROTC Unit has gained national recognition as a Distinguished Unit with Academic Honors. The NJROTC Unit, un-der the guidance and leadership of Lt. Terry LaBeff and Chief Brian Jaynes, con-tinues to soar to new heights. For the past three years, the unit has qualified for Nationals, and would have this year, if the COVID-19 Pandemic had not put an end to the annual competition. The NJROTC program is a multi-faceted leadership pro-gram that encompasses components of the various arts and sciences coupled with team and character-building education. For the first time, during the 2020-2021 school year, cadets will earn NYS High School health credit through the course, in addition to Physical Education credit, and the ability to become CPR and First Aid certified.

CAREER SHADOWING

In the fall, Guidance Counselor Erika Kistowski organized a career shadowing day for seniors. Students got to go out into the field and experience what a regular day is like in their chosen profession. 25 seniors shadowed at UTC Aerospace, Upstate Cerebral Palsy, Rome Hospital, Rome Police Department, Utica College, English Contracting, Felt Evans, Utica City Hall, Rome Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, Jay Groah Group, One Realty Partners, and Apex Surgical Center to name a few. Additionally, a virtual career fair was held in the Spring. These real world experi-ences are just another way Notre Dame makes students world ready.

9 TO 5

Dolly Parton’s famed musical “9 to 5” was brought to life on the stage of the Msgr. Francis J. Willenburg Center by the Blue and Gold Players. Despite the early Feb-ruary snowstorm that caused one performance to be rescheduled, the show still sold out all 3 times, with rave reviews.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS

Despite several performances being cut due to the outbreak of COVID-19, our Campus Ministry team was still able to present the Living Stations of the Cross Through the Eyes of Mary at two parishes—St. Anthony & St. Agnes and Our Lady of Lourdes. The presentation of the stations of the cross is an opportunity for Catholics to reflect on Christ’s final days during the season of Lent.

Notre Dame Gives Back

A central aspect of Catholic education is learning the importance of service to oth-ers. When students take part in service activities—both local and beyond—they demonstrate the values and faith they gain through their Catholic education and learn how to make the world a better place. When they observe how others serve the community, they gain an appreciation for how they can continue to serve oth-ers their entire lives.

During Catholic Schools Week in January, our entire student body, including fac-ulty and staff, were either out of the building volunteering or here on campus engaged in various service-oriented activities. Students read stories to children at Notre Dame Elementary School and Rome Catholic School, served in day care centers such as the Thea Bowman Center, prepared and served meals at Mother Marianne’s Westside Kitchen and Hope House, played cards with residents in lo-cal nursing homes, helped out at the refugee center, worked with various veter-ans organizations, and some packaged materials for local charitable organizations such as Catholic Charities.

This day of giving extended beyond the Utica area, with students and faculty sign-ing up to volunteer at organizations within their hometowns.

CORNELIUS DEEP ’16, ANSWERS CALL TO THE PRIESTHOOD

Cornelius Deep, Notre Dame Class of 2016, recently graduated from the

Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where he studied the-ology and philosophy. Cornelius, son of Peter and Lucy Deep, and brother of Jeremiah, Notre Dame Class of 2012, attended Notre Dame Schools from Kindergarten through twelfth grade. We sat down with Cornelius to talk to him about his Notre Dame experience and the impact it had on his discernment of the priesthood.

What did you study at Catholic University and why?

Cornelius: When I started at Catholic University, I actually majored in ac-counting. It was during one of the first courses that every business major at Catholic U is required to take called “Business as a Vocation” that I realized, despite me excelling in my other accounting courses, this was not what God was calling me to. I was really enjoying my theology and philosophy classes during my freshman year and fell in love with them. So that, com-bined with my seriously considering the priesthood as an option, made me decide it was time for a change. Thus, the summer after my freshman year, I officially changed my major to the-ology and then added a second major during my sophomore year of philosophy. On the surface level, it sounds like a drastic change, but it took a lot of thought and prayer during my freshman year.

Why do you want to be a priest?

Cornelius: A good piece of advice I received is the closer you grow to God, the more your will conforms to His will. I want to be a priest because I am confident this is where God is calling me. One aspect of the priesthood that I am drawn to is the Mass and specifically preaching the homily. I think the homily is such a great opportu-nity to take Jesus’ Word and make it applicable to people’s lives in the here and now.

When did you realize that you were being called to be a priest?

Cornelius: To be honest with you, the priesthood was something that was always on my mind ever since I was little, but I kept trying to push it away. The thought would come to me for some period of time and then I would put in on the back burner. It wasn’t until my first year at Catholic U that I began to grow deeper in my faith more than ever, which helped me to grow closer to God so I could hear His voice. I began to go to daily Mass, pray the rosary, and attend campus ministry events, to name a few, all of which contributed in my discernment.

In what ways was your education at Notre Dame instrumental in discerning your call?

Cornelius: I think one way my education at Notre Dame has been instrumental to me in discerning my call to the priesthood as it has given my faith life such a great foundation. Jesus uses the parable of the seed falling on rich soil and it produces much fruit. Well, my education at Notre Dame has given me a great foundation for my faith life so that it could flourish, such as my religion classes as well as simply being around others who share in the Catholic faith.

How has your Notre Dame education impacted your life?

Cornelius: My Notre Dame education has impacted my life because it gave me the opportunity to express my Catholic faith at such a crucial point in a young person’s life. A few examples of these are being able to altar serve school Mass-es, participate in living stations of the cross, and not only learning, but discussing the beliefs and practices of Catholicism with others during class
