Type your answers in RED below each question/prompt.

5 pts. each

1.  Explain what the importance of the Rhetorical Triangle as described in your handbook.

When we write for others, we write about topic we want an audience to listen to. The three

components (writer, topic and audience) are what we need to remember when writing a paper.

2.  Briefly describe three different prewriting techniques.

Three different prewriting techniques are brainstorming, outlining, and clustering or branching.

Under brainstorming you have a general topic in mind, so you write thoughts or ideas that make up

that topic. Under outlining you structure how the paper is going to be paragraph by paragraph. For

clustering or branching, you write a topic in the middle and branch off ideas.

3.  Describe what a writer does when revising a paper.

You should let others read your paper, so they can fix come of the mistakes you missed and give you

feedback that will make you paper better. Read a paragraph at a time that way it is not too much.

Look for a purpose, thesis, and central idea of each paragraph, details, and who is the audience.

These are some of the things a writer does when revising.

4.  Describe the difference between revising and editing.

When revising you look at the general ideas. For example, do they have a thesis, an audience and a

general idea of each paragraph. During editing, you are fine-tuning everything in your paper. Here

you look at punctuation, grammar, and spelling.

5.  What is a comma splice? A fused sentence? How can these errors be repaired?

A comma splice is when independent clauses are joined only by a comma, but are missing a

coordinating conjunction. To fix this you can use a connecting word (and, but, for, etc.) after the

comma or use a semicolon instead. A fused sentence occurs when there is no punctuation between

independent clauses. To fix this you can separate the sentences into two or use a semicolon.

6.  Define paraphrasing as applied to a research paper.

When you paraphrase you take information from a source and put it into your own words. It goes

into more detail then a summary would and you still have to site it.

7.  In a research paper, what should be cited?

Any information you quoted, paraphrased, or summarized in your paper should be cited.

8.  Explain four reasons why plagiarism is wrong.

Plagiarism is wrong because you are trying to take credit for someone elses own work. That person

took the time to write what they did and so should you. Also, stealing other peoples work can make

you look like you appear to be more knowledgeable or skilled. This can go against you if someone

skilled tries to talk to you about it. You are losing on your opportunity to gain knowledge from your

topic. When we do the work we contribute more knowledge about the subject, so there is

something more to learn. Plagiarizing takes away from the learning process. Lastly, there are

penalties that can be at stake, such as your reputation or career.

9.  Describe the purpose of signal words and phrases in a research paper.

Signal words connect a quote or an idea with the source to make a connection to what you are

writing about. These signal words, can clue us in that a quote is about to be said. Signal words

include according to, suggests, believes, and more.

10. Give three reasons for using a direct quote in a research paper.

You use a direct quote when there is no other way to summarize or explain it (the quoting person

explains it the best), when it is someone who is more knowledgeable than you, and backing up what

you are explaining.

Reflective Essay

During my time in English Composition 101, I have learned things I will be able to use in

my continuing college days and maybe even afterwards. My instructor has made a great impact

in my writing process and has made me a better writer overall. Mr. Neuburger taught us what we

needed to know while helping us along the way. He did not need to be strict to get done

everything we have accomplished.

In English 101, we wrote a few big papers. Some of the papers were research,

descriptive, and narrative essays. For each essay, we were given time in class to work on them

which helped so we did not have to write a sloppy essay overnight. Technology in the classroom

has allowed us to work on our essays at school and home. We have also gained the ability to use

technology effectively, so it can help us with our work from school. One of my favorite essays

was the descriptive. This essay made me think outside the box to produce a great piece. All the

little details we added made the paper seem more real. By adding similes, metaphors, and other

descriptive things it was as if we were actually there to experience it since we could create a

mental pictures. Another essay I enjoyed writing was a research paper. I liked how I was able to

look up more information on the Holocaust, therefore gaining more knowledge about the topic.

We also had to put in in-text citations and correctly cite each site we got information on. This

allowed us to use what we learned about citations in our paper. Besides writing papers, we also

watched videos on grammar, commented on various videos and blog posts, and created a how to

video. This required us to understand how to use technology.

My experience overall was great. One thing I would change is the amount of time we

took preparing for the research paper (making note cards and annotated bibliography). More of

that time should have been spent writing the paper instead of the annotated bibliography. I felt

like I was cramming to get the paper done. Other then that I had a wonderful time in Mr.

Neuburger¶s class and would recommend him to anyone needing to take English Composition

101. He was a great teacher who cared about you and worked with you so that you could get

your work turned in.

Taking Composition with Mr. Neuburger has helped me become a better writer. He gave

us constructive criticism that improved our papers. With what I learned in his class I will be able

to use for the rest of my college days.
