  • Description: I drew the rose and wanted to create a poster that encompassed more meaning.

Process: I scanned the image of the rose. I downloaded a photograph of the girl and brought them both into Photoshop. I also downloaded the image of the ink drop. I used the masking tool to create the entire flow of the image.

Message: This project conveys that this girl is more than just what people see and think of her. The Shakespear quote elludes to this.

Audience: This is directed towards people who are intrigued by designs that have layers of meaning.

Top thing learned: The best creations can happen when youre not pressuring yourself to create, and youre just putting thoughts together.

  • Description: This is a Robbon Cutting invitation that I created for a company that I work for.

Process: I created the entire image in Illustrator, primarily with the pen tool. I then placed the completed image in InDesign, and added the text and logos.

Message: I want people to know where, when, and what the event is. I want them to understand that this is an invitation.

    Audience: Business professionals

Top thing learned: I designed this, and then was asked to make it into full color, instead of just accents. Not all designs are ment to be in full color.

    Color scheme: Analogus, yellow, brick

    Title font: Sans serif

The ExperienceRachel OkelberryRachel Okelberry has been practicing at the Idaho Martial Arts Academy for 3 months. Her father said, It has built her confidence way up! She enjoys a sparring exercise where they use pool noodle floaties.

Belt CeremoniesEvery 3 months the participants can choose to be tested on their skills. They are asked to give a short speech, then demonstrate required skills. They begin as a white belt, then progress through yellow, orange, red, green, purple, blue, brown, and black belts.

GoalsTim Ladderman hopes to encourage the participants to be respectful, and active. through the training programs the participants are required to develop public speaking skills, and a strong work ethic. Regularly, Tim interviews the participants parents to make sure that they are behaving at

home, and doing well in school. If the parents give a negative review, the participant will be required to do pushups. The team is an extension of the family.

Description: This is a brochure that I designed for the Idaho Martial Arts Academy, located in Rexburg, ID.

Process: I used InDesign to design the layout of the brochure. I used Illustrator to design the logo. For the logo, I used the pen tool to draw the fighter. In Photoshop, I took the photo of the black belts and took out the background. In InDesign I created the QR code to link the the Facebook page.

Message: I wanted to communicate that this academy builds character and strength in its participants.

    Audience: Families

Top thing learned: I love how the systems work together. I used all of the programs, and linked them, and was able to make changes in the different programs, and they would change in the InDesign file.

  • Description: This is for my personal brand, Rachel Gillan Design. Gillan is my married name.

Process: I used Adobe Illustrator to create both my logo and business card. For the logo, I used the pen tool extensively to create both the R and G. Then I used the ellipse tool for the layers of circles. For the business card, I just copied and pasted the logo, then used the flare tool to add the flares. I think that the flares gave it a unique look. I then carried that aspect for a play on words on the back of the business card, Everyone needs a little flair.

Message: I wanted to convey that Im a designer, with a unique style. My design is very clean, so that shows a modern style as well.

Audience: My audience is companies that are in need of a designer, that want more modern style.

Top thing learned: I learned a lot about the importance of unity throughout a design. Its so important to continue the same color schemes, fonts, and logos.

    Everyone needs a little FLAIR

  • Description: This is for my personal brand, Rachel Gillan Design. Gillan is my married name. I really enjoyed this project for a few reasons. I loved the continuity of it. I enjoyed being able to carry the logo to multiple items, using the same fonts, and using the same colors. I would use this if I started my own little design company.

Process: The letter head was created in Adobe InDesign. I placed the logo, and sized it. The water mark used the same placement method. I just changed the transparency.

  • Description: Welcome to my first try at coding a web page. I wanted to explain the process that I used to create my personal logo, and try my hand at a new skill.

Process: For the actual coding, I used Note Padd ++ to write my code. Saving my code files, and the image of the logo that I wanted to use allowed me to link it into the web page.

Message: I also wanted to show that I have a good understanding of coding, and what needed to be in code to make sure that it would validate.

Audience: This page is geared towards people who are going through the design process. Top thing learned: CodingIt is very rewarding when you figure it out, and there are a lot of resources online to help you figure it out.

  • Description: The quote from The Family: A Proclamation of the World says, The family is ordained of God. This means to me that Christ is a the center of our home. God loves us and wants us to feel the joy and happiness that we can achieve in families.

Process: I used Adobe Photoshop. I chose a photo of Christ, that I found on Google. Then, I had taken a photo with a DSLR camera of concrete, for the texture. I used the masking tool to bring forward the texture, and to smooth out the edges of the engagement picture. I thought that it was important to stick to the rule of thirds. I have Christs eyes at the left top third, our photo in the right top third, and the text in the lower right third.

Message: I wanted to convey that a gospel centered home is one of happiness and love.

Audience: My family, and friends. I always want them to know of our love and commitment to the Savior.

Top thing I learned: I really like the masking tool. Filter/Colorization and where it was applied: I used the vibrance tool on the engagement photo. The brightness pulled a lot of attention away from Christ. I also used the hue and saturation tool on the photo of Christ to bump him up a little bit.

Color scheme and color names: Monochromatic. I used varying shades of the darkest gold on Sister Esplins color wheel.

Title Font, name and category: Family is a Sans Serif.

Body Copy, name and category: All of the text, except family, is in an Old Style font.

  • Description: I took this photo in my kitchen. I have a small herb garden in my window, and this is an areal shot of my sweet basil. Once uploaded into Photoshop, I adjusted the vibrancy of the colors, and increased the highlights and shadows. I drew my first rectangle, filled it with the yellow color, then changed the opacity to 41%. The stroke is the lime color. I drew and copied the circles, so that each of the six circles would be the same size. I filled them with the yellow, lime, and green for my analogous color scheme.

Message: I want people to look at the world around them. This poster is designed to encourage people to look around at the simple beauties.

    Audience: Middle aged people.

Top Thing Learned: Photoshop isnt as user friendly as some of the other Adobe products. I really struggled moving things around. When I would try to move something, and I didnt have that layer selected, it would move the wrong thing, whichever layer was selected. It took a little longer to move things, and change things because of the way the layers worked.

    Filter: Hue/Saturation, Vibrancy, Exposure

Color Scheme: Analogous: Green, Lime, Yellow

  • Description: The Grove at Riverside is a company that Im currently working for. I thought that it would be fun to revamp their logo.

Process: I used Adobe Illustrator to create each logo. I was really cautious to align Grove and At Riverside. I used the rectangle tool to create house, using the shape builder tool to turn them into one shape.

Message: I wanted to convey that The Grove at Riverside is somewhere you could build a home. The bright colors suggests a young community.

Audience: The logo is designed to reach young modern people. The clean lines, and contrast are more eye catching for people who are 20-35 years old.

Top thing that I learned: I love illustrator! It was a lot more user friendly for than some of the other Adobe programs.

Color Scheme: Complementary Teal and Brick

Fonts: Heading: Moonglow, Body copy: Perpetua STD

  • Description: I really like the Water.org philanthropy. They bring water to remote countries, where they arent able to get clean water on their own. The event is a kick-off party for a Try-a-Try (youre given one month to complete an entire Triathlon). Worlds gym in Rexburg, ID is hosting this nonevent.

Process: I used Microsoft Word to create this ad. I scanned this image from Cosmopolitan magazines fitness section. I really liked her blue pants, and from that used a monochromatic color scheme. The Worlds Gym heading is aligned with both sides of the picture. The Try-a-Tri heading is aligned on the left with the photo as well. Message: I wanted to convey the athletic aspect of the event, and give the details of the charity. I feel like I achieved that.

Audience: My audience is athletic people, who are wanting to accomplish something an amazing feet, and those who want to donate to a charity.

    Color Scheme: Monochromatic

    Color Name: Blue

Top think that I learned: I learned that color schemes arent always as easy as I would like them to be. Title Font & Category: Impact- Sans Serif

Body copy font & Category: Adobe Hebrew- Old Style

Scanned Image: Cosmopolitan Magazine, June 2015 issue, page 98. I scanned it from my home HP scanner.

  • Description: This is a flier that I designed for the Vouant Graduation Leadership Conference.

Process: I used Adobe InDesign to design this. The text, photo, and logo were supplied by my instructor. This is actually my second design. My initial design was messy, and had too much contrast. This design is a compilation of several of my sketches.

Message: I really wanted to have it look clean and professional, so that graduating seniors would be able to get the message at a first glance. One of my favorite parts of the design is the QR code. If you scan this code, it will take you to the website to register for this conference. This QR code really reaches out to college students.

Audience: My audience is graduating college students.

Top thing that I learned: I really enjoy using InDesign! It has a bit of a learning curve to it, but once you figure it out, its a really fun program to use.

  • With my digital camera, I went outside and canvased my front yard. I saw this Dandelion, and loved the way the light hit the white plumage at the top. I knelt down to get rid of most of the background noise.

We got this shell while in Grand Turk. I put it on our black sheets. My husband held a flashlight over it.

The same trees behind my apartment, and the same leaf. This time I focused on branches behind the leaf, which distorted the leaf in the foreground.

The tree is in the vertical thirds, and the roof of the apartment building hits the top right third of the frame.

This duck was swimming in a nearby river. The space behind duck is great room, and leads your eyes to the duck and the direction that its going in.
