classes began, more than half a dozen tickets were issued to students walking around the streets of Potsdam late at night, assumingly partyhopping and enjoying the

nightlife they will come to know and probably love. The cause of these tickets was not necessarily drugs or parties, but OPEN CONTAINERS! NCNow News reported, “Vil

lage police issued tickets for open container and underage consumption of alcohol with intent to consume Saturday evening and early Sunday.” These tickets were issued primarily on Bay Street and Pierrepont Avenue, two main ‘highways’ where the cops crawl around, seeking anyone who might have some

kind of beverage in their hand.Seriously people, use a little

common sense. You’re underage, 9%,:5#$ '.1;;9$ )1+)6.7$ )"#$ &5##-%<$from overbearing parents and you’re making friends who want to party. Here’s a little advice from a senior who’s learned the hard way:THINK BEFORE YOU ACT!

When you’re going to a party, and you know you’re going to drink, bringing a bottle full of anything when your underage can be tempting, but it’s grounds for immediate ticketing. Your name will go on the

record, and you’ll probably regret it the next morning when everyone is talking about it. Not to mention the buzz kill any cop can make you feel. Just don’t be STUPID! Use better judgment! (Freshmen,

I’m talking to you).It goes without saying that we

all could exhibit a little more care and attention to the little things. So don’t walk around with an open container, don’t be so obviously obnoxious late at night, don’t walk in large groups and be more careful to not get caught.

es’s very own Hurley’s Nightclub kicked off the Fall semester lineup with touring act Highly Suspect on Saturday, Sept. 6. While the crowd seemed mostly subdued, the band seemed unfazed as they tore up the stage over the three sets of diverse originals and covers.Hailing from Cape Cod, Highly

Suspect is a group of friends who collectively create some incredibly well crafted tunes that explore themes from punk rock, funk, reggae and at times the psychedelic. While their live sets are comprised of songs that segue seamlessly into each other and extended instrumental breaks, Highly Suspect lacks several of the tropes found in “jam band” music. At one point during the performance, bassist Rich Meyer even expressed the band held some enmity towards the term.Whatever the case, the solo sec

tions were remarkably concise, and sincere musicianship was a constant throughout the performance. Also, unlike most jam bands, Highly Suspect had a repertoire of wellcrafted tunes that were made all the more interesting with catchy vocal melodies and wellexecuted harmonies. Rounding out the set were some very tasteful covers including “Billie Jean” by Michael Jackson, the theme song to The Fresh Prince of BelAir, and a rendition of “Seven

Nation Army” that I actually preferred to the original recording by The White Stripes. While these are all be integral

factors for a great performance, Highly Suspect went above and beyond with their use of effects, pedals and other peripherals. Guitarist Johnny Stevens had an uncanny knack for knowing exactly when to toss in a bit of guitar delay or engage an octave pedal, and it made the performance all the more

engaging. Also utilized were two synthesizers at the front of the stage that Meyer and Stevens would use occasionally for atmosphere, and sometimes as primary instruments for songs. Needless to say, the band made a great deal of sound for just three guys.Though the performance was ex

cellent, SUNY Potsdam’s student !"#$%#&'()*&+$%#,"--&#%*.&%!/++%"(%this show as attendance couldn’t have been more than thirty or forty

people. It hurts to see a band play almost unnoticed on campus when they are very accessible, especially if they’re hardworking musicians like the gents in Highly Suspect. Regardless, the band has made some recent headway with Atlantic Records, so there may be a major release on the way. If you haven’t already checked out the band, please do so. I’d hate to say, “I told you so,” when they’re touring the country.

Dan Adhoot, a well known comedian from New York City who has appeared on Comedy Central and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, performed for SUNY Potsdam students on Friday, Sept. 2 in the Union MPR.From the beginning, Adhoot made the

show hilarious. He began the show by intentionally picking on certain people in the audience, particularly those who had entered a few minutes late. He asked questions about them, which were the basis for his funny, tasteful jokes. This comedian, unlike others who have performed at SUNY Potsdam, did not rely on racist or offensive jokes. His standup was entertaining, impromptu, and had most of the audience in stitches. Adhoot’s repertoire was appropriate for college

age audiences and relatable to everyone, which truly made it an entertaining show.At the end of the performance, Adhoot did

something entirely unexpected. Given the impromptu nature of his standup it could have been predicted, but nevertheless the '(/+&%A/1%&(*),&+$%18,-,)1)(=% *"%/++5%B#.""*%called up a member of the audience and prankcalled the student’s parents, telling the shocked father that his son had been found with marijuana. This was a spectacular ending to the performance, one that had people walking away still laughing and in a much better mood than before. Dan Adhoot was a talented, tasteful comedian. Student Entertainment Services (which meets Saturdays at six in the union forum room) did an excellent job of choosing him for a great night of entertainment and alternative fun at SUNY Potsdam.

Having a desk calendar will help you deal with this evergrowing task list in a calm and collected manner.Read your syllabus! You can use your desk calen

Welcome back, Potsdam! I’m hoping your summer was better than mine. I spent the summer !"# $%&'()*# &+,!"-# &%# ."(# )# /%0# !"#a town that essentially closes for three months. This summer taught me the value of a dollar and other life lessons.Thank God summer family va

However, food stopped being an issue when I walked into a beach chain store. Here, my North Carolina fate was smithed around the most epic pet available, a hermit crab.My girlfriend and I were walking

The crab pinched that knife so hard that when the Russian let go, it stayed vertical for ten seconds. “See, very strong,” he said. I was sold and named the crab Bruce. Now, Bruce may have had a pink and purple shell, but he was very secure with his masculinity, and could hold his liquor like a pro. Unless the shell means he can hold his pink Cosmos like a pro. On the night before we left the beach, Bruce prepared himself for the greatest escape in hermit crab history. He saw his opening: I had left the lid to his cage unscrewed. Perhaps he thought of this as a challenge. It was not. He still set out to accept that challenge and prove me wrong. I immediately regretted getting him that Houdini autobiography. I still wish him well on his new adventure. Perhaps I’ll read about him snowboarding Mt. Everest, or stopping a wouldbe train robber. But, if he didn’t survive, or his highoctane life claimed him, then all I can say is Bruce...goodnight sweet prince.
