Introduction1WelcometotheclinicalinternshipcomponentoftheRadiologicTechnologyProgramattheUniversityofHartford.Thepurposeofthemanualistoprovidethestudent,clinicalinstructors,clinicalsupervisorsandclinicalaffiliateswiththepoliciesandproceduresrequiredforasuccessfulclinicalexperience.Themanualprovidesrelevantresourceinformationanddescribesthestructureandfunctionoftheclinicalprogram.ThecontentofthismanualisdesignedtoguidethestudenttowardachievingthemissionoftheRadiographyprogram:tobecomeaneducationally-prepared,clinically-competent,andprofessionalentry-levelradiographer.Pleaserefertothisdocumentifyouhaveanyquestionsregardingclinicalpoliciesandprocedures.Itisthestudent’sresponsibilitytoreadandunderstandallaspectsoftheClinicalHandbook.Studentswillbestrictlyheldtothestandardsdescribedinthishandbook.However,thehandbookisnotacontractbetweentheProgramandourstudents.Wereservetherighttoamendormodifythesepolicies,rules,andproceduresatanytimedeemednecessary.
RadiographyProgram2Theradiographyclinicalcurriculumiscompetency-based.Thepre-competency,clinicalcompetency,andre-checkevaluationsserveastheprimarytoolsforquantitativeassessmentofindividualstudentprogressthroughouttheprogram’sdesignatedclinicalinternshipexperiences.Theseinstruments,aswellasallotherassessmenttoolswerespecificallydesignedtoensureobjectivityandconsistencyastheyareemployedbytheevaluator(s)togradethestudents’clinicalperformance.TheclinicalinternshipexperiencesaredesignatedasRAD320,RAD345,RAD365,RAD415,RAD425,andRAD435.Theseclinicalexperienceinternshipsaccountfor14creditsoftheradiologictechnologyprofessionalcomponentcurriculum.

TheCodeofEthicsfortheRadiologicTechnologistThemedicalimagingprofessionalisrequiredtoupholdacommitmenttoprofessionalconductinalloftheiractions.StudentsandgraduatesofourProgramareexpectedtonotonlyembodytheseprofessionalstandardsbuttoparticipateinactivitiesthatdemonstratetheircommitmenttosuperbpatientcareandadedicationtowardslife-longlearning.Theseactivitiesinclude,butarenotlimitedto,communityservice,researchandscholarshipinhealthcare,andparticipationinlocal,state,andnationalprofessionalorganizationsinthefield.Insupportoftheseendeavorsandasamethodofprotectingtheintegrityofourprofession,theAmericanSocietyofRadiologicTechnologists(ASRT)hasdevelopedaCodeofEthicsthatmaybeusedbyprofessionalsintheirpursuitoftechnicalandpatientcareexcellence.TheRadiologicTechnologyProgramoftheUniversityofHartfordfullyacceptsthesestandardsandrequiresallofourstudentstoadoptthemwithintheirdailypractice.CodeofEthics*
1. Theradiologictechnologistconductshimself/herselfinaprofessionalmanner,respondstopatientneedsandsupportscolleaguesandassociatesinprovidingqualitypatientcare.
2. Theradiologictechnologistactstoadvancetheprincipleobjectiveoftheprofessiontoprovideservicestohumanitywithfullrespectforthedignityofmankind.
3. Theradiologictechnologistdeliverspatientcareandserviceunrestrictedbytheconcernsofpersonalattributesorthenatureofthediseaseorillness,andwithoutdiscriminationonthebasisofsex,race,creed,religionorsocioeconomicstatus.
4. Theradiologictechnologistpracticestechnologyfoundedupontheoreticalknowledgeandconcepts,usesequipmentandaccessoriesconsistentwiththepurposesforwhichtheyweredesigned,andemploysproceduresandtechniquesappropriately.
5. Theradiologictechnologistassessessituations;exercisescare,discretionandjudgment;assumesresponsibilityforprofessionaldecisions;andactsinthebestinterestofthepatient.
6. Theradiologictechnologistactsasanagentthroughobservationandcommunicationtoobtainpertinentinformationforthephysiciantoaidinthediagnosisandtreatmentofthepatientandrecognizesthatinterpretationanddiagnosisareoutsidethescopeofpracticefortheprofession.
7. Theradiologictechnologistusesequipmentandaccessories,employstechniquesandprocedures,performsservicesinaccordancewithanacceptedstandardofpractice,anddemonstratesexpertiseinminimizingradiationexposuretothepatient,selfandothermembersofthehealthcareteam.
8. Theradiologictechnologistpracticesethicalconductappropriatetotheprofessionandprotectsthepatient'srighttoqualityradiologictechnologycare.
9. Theradiologictechnologistrespectsconfidencesentrustedinthecourseofprofessionalpractice,respectsthepatient'srighttoprivacyandrevealsconfidentialinformationonlyasrequiredbylawortoprotectthewelfareoftheindividualorthecommunity.
10. Theradiologictechnologistcontinuallystrivestoimproveknowledgeandskillsbyparticipatingincontinuingeducationandprofessionalactivities,sharingknowledgewithcolleaguesandinvestigatingnewaspectsofprofessionalpractice.

evaluationsduringthissemester.Eachstudentmustcompletetheprogram’srequired58clinicalcompetenciesbytheendofthesemester.ClinicaldaysareMonday,Wednesday,andFridayfrom7:30amto4:00pm,8:00amto4:30pmor5:00pmforanapproximatetotalof312*hours.Thestudentwillbegranted24hoursofpersonaltimeduringthesemester.*TheonlyexceptiontotherequiredclinicalhoursisaclassconflictattheUniversity.AlettermustbeobtainedfromtheDirectorofClinicalEducationwhensuchaclassconflictexists,inorderforthestudenttohaveearlydismissalfromtheclinicalaffiliate.GRADINGPOLICIESAsyllabusforclinicalcourseswillbedistributedonthefirstdayofeachclass.Eachindividualsyllabuswillcontainthespecificinformationregardingtherequiredminimumnumberofclinicalhours,clinicalcompetencies,recheckevaluations,professionalevaluations,clinicalevaluations,andstudentclinicalsiteevaluations.Eachinstructorwillfollowthesamegradingsystem,whichis:
A= 94-100 C+= 77-79 A-= 90-93 C= 73-76 B+= 87-89 C-= 70-72 B= 83-86 D= 65-69 B-= 80-82 F= below65StudentsmustmaintainaC+averageineachRADdesignatedcourseinordertocontinuewithintheRadiologicTechnologyprofessionalcomponentcurriculum.CLINICALCOMPETENCYEVALUATIONS5ClinicalexperienceIallowsthestudenttocompleteaspecifiednumberofpre-competencyevaluationsandclinicalfacultyassessmentsduringthissemester.Inordertodemonstratecompetencyinperformingradiographicprocedures,eachstudentwillperform58differentclinicalcompetencyevaluationsduringtheirclinicalexperienceII-VIinternships.Theseexaminationsaregradedemployingtheclinicalcompetencyevaluationforms.Thenumberofexaminationsrequiredpersemesterispublishedbysemesterinthesyllabusforeachclinicalexperiencecourse.
Thefollowingprocess,whichwillbeinitiatedbythestudent,isfollowedincompletingtheClinicalCompetencyandRecheckProcedure:
1. Thefour(4)pre-competencyevaluationsmustbeselectedfromthefollowinganatomicregions:chest,abdomen,upperextremity,lowerextremity,shouldergirdleandpelvisgirdle.
2. Two(2)ofthepre-competencyrecheckevaluationswillbecompletedbyaUniversityofHartfordclinicalinstructor.
3. Itistheresponsibilityofthestudenttolocateasuitablecaseforacompetencyevaluation.Thisshouldoccuronlyafterthestudenthasachievedanappropriatelevelofexperienceinaclinicalprocedure.ThestudentmustnotifytheClinicalSupervisororstaffRadiologicTechnologist*that

theywouldliketoperformaClinicalCompetencyEvaluationpriortothestartofaparticularexam.Oncethecompetencyprocedureisinitiateditmustbecarriedouttocompletion.
4. ThestudentprovidesaClinicalCompetencyEvaluationformtotheTechnologistorClinical
Supervisor.Thestudentcompletestheradiographicexaminationinitsentirety–preparestheexaminationroom,communicateswiththepatient,andcompletesalltechnicalcomponentsoftheexamination.Thestudent,underthedirectsupervisionoftheevaluatingtechnologistorclinicalsupervisor,mustperformallfacetsoftheradiographicprocedure.
5. Oncethecompetencyisstarteditmustbecompleted.Theexammaybestoppedifthepatient
orstudentisindangerorifthestudentappearstobeperformingthewrongexam.Ifthestudentattemptstoperformthewrongexam,he/sheautomaticallyfailsthecompetency.
6. Uponcompletionoftheexam,thestudentreviewstheacquiredimageswiththetechnologistorclinicalinstructor,whoimmediatelycompletesthecompetencyevaluationform.Theformisplacedinasealed,signedenvelopeandgiventothestudentorsiteclinicalsupervisorforeventualcollectionbyUniversityfaculty.
7. Studentsarerequiredtoachieveaminimumscoreof85%onallcompetencyevaluations.
Scoresunder85%mustberepeated.Intheeventthatacompetencyprocedureneedstoberepeated,thefinalscoreearnedbyastudentwillequaltheaverageoftheinitialandrepeatcompetencygrade(s).
8. Onaroutinebasis,Universityfacultymembersreviewastudent’sclinicalcompetencycase(s)
duringsitevisits.TheUniversityfacultymembermayalsorequesttoreviewothercasesperformedbythestudent.
9. TheUniversityfacultymemberassessestheclinicalprogressofthestudentusingtheClinical
CompetencyRecheckform.TheUniversityfacultymembertransportsallcompetencyevaluationformstotheUniversity’sDirectorofClinicalEducation.
10. TheDirectorofClinicalEducationreviewstheformsforcompletenessandcorrectness,andthey
areincorporatedintothestudent’sclinicalgradeforthatsemester.Theformsarestoredinthestudents’clinicalfileforanyfuturereview.
*TheRadiologicTechnologistemployedinthisprocessmustbecertifiedbytheARRTforatleastoneyear,statelicensedandnotonnewemployeeprobationattheclinicalsite.ELIGIBILITYREQUIREMENTSFORTHECLINICALINTERNSHIPEXPERIENCE6CPRCertificationAllstudentsarerequiredtobeCPRcertified.TheUniversityofHartfordRadiographyProgramwillcertifyallstudentswhodonothaveaCPRcertificationduringthefirstweekoftheFallsemester.

HEALTHFORMS7Allstudentsmustarrangetohaveaphysicalexaminationperformedbyanindependentlicensedpractitioner.Thephysicalmustbecompletedbeforeanyclinicalexperiencemaybegin.Theformsareprovidedtothestudentaspartofthestudentorientationprocedure.PDFcopiesoftheformsmustbeuploadedtotheImmunizationTrackercomponentofthestudent’sCastleBranch.comaccount.Youshouldbeawarethatallhealthcareprovidersinvolvedindirectpatientcareactivities,whichincludesradiographers,areatincreasedriskofcontractingHepatitisB.HepatitisBinfectionsarespreadthroughdirectcontactwithaninfectedperson'sblood,bodyfluidsorsaliva.Whilethelikelihoodofyouactuallycontractingthediseaseisminimizedbytheuseofpropermedicaltechniques(UniversalPrecautions),youshouldconsultyourfamilyphysicianregardingyourindividualneedfortheHepatitisBvaccination.Varicellavaccinesaremandatory.Abloodtitermaybeperformedtoestablishthestudent’simmunity.Tuberculosis(TB)testingmustbeperformedonanannualbasis,andresultspresentedtotheDirectorofClinicalEducationinSeptemberofeachclinicalyear.Thefluvaccineismandatoryforallstudents.Studentshavetheoptiontodeclinetheinfluenzavaccineduetohealthorotherpersonalreasons.However,declinationofthefluvaccinemaylimitthestudent’seligibilitytorotateatcertainclinicalaffiliates,andmayrequirethatthestudentwearasurgicalmaskduringtheirclinicalexperience.Asecure,web-basedtrackingsystemisutilizedtouploadandmanageallimmunizationandhealthdocumentation.ORIENTATIONFORCLINICALSITESJeffersonRadiology,TheHospitalofCentralConnecticut,St.FrancisHospitalandMedicalCenter,ECHNaffiliatesandConnecticutChildren’sHospitalandMedicalCenterrequiresite-specificorientationbeforethestartofclinical.ThiswillbearrangedbytheDirectorofClinicalEducationbeforethestartoftheclinicalinternship.PoliciesIDENTIFICATIONBADGESEachstudentmustarriveattheclinicalaffiliatesitewearinghisorherschoolandclinicalsiteIDbadgesandfilmbadge.Additionally,eachstudentmustcomepreparedwiththeirUniversityissuedleadmarkerstousewhenpositioningpatients.ThestudentwillreceiveoneschoolIDbadge,filmbadgeandsetofleadmarkers.Studentsareresponsibleforthecost(s)associatedwiththereplacementoflostitems.RADIATIONPROTECTIONSTANDARDS8OccupationalProtectionStandardsTheProgramwillconstantlymonitorthelevelsofradiationreceivedbythestudentsinallrelatedclinicalandeducationalactivities.EveryeffortwillbemadebytheProgram,andmustbemadebythestudent

toensurethatthelevelofradiationexposureiskeptwellbelowthoseconsideredsafefortheoccupationallyexposed.Thestudentmustassumeresponsibilityfor:
1. Maintainingpersonalawarenessandresponsibilityofthelevelsofexposuretheyreceive.
2. Monitoringtheirmonthlyreportsintermsofestablishedsafelimits.
3. Adoptingresponsibleattitudes,behaviorsandpracticesregardingtheclinicaluseofradiationtoreducetheirownexposureandthatoftheirpatientstothelowestachievablelevel(ALARA).
4. SubmittingtheirradiationmonitoringdevicesmonthlytotheRadiographyProgramDirectoror
DirectorofClinicalEducation.Thesedevicesaretobewornonlyduringthestudent'sclinicalandon-campusenergizedlaboratoryexperiencesandnotduringapersonalnon-occupationalprocedure.
5. Safeguardingtheirmonitoringdevice.Lostordamageddevicesaretobereportedimmediately
totheProgramDirectororDirectorofClinicalEducationandwillbereplacedatthestudent'sexpense.
6. Wearingamonitoringdeviceinaccordancewiththepolicyofthefacilitytowhichthestudentis
assigned.
7. Wearingamonitoringdeviceduringalllaboratoryexercisesutilizingtheenergizedx-rayfacilityinroom215AofDanaHall.
OccupationalradiationmonitoringresultsareavailablethroughtheDirectorofClinicalEducation’soffice.Itisthestudent’sresponsibilitytochecktheirresultsmonthly.Thestudentisrequiredtoinitialtheoccupationaldosereport,thusindicatingthattheyhavereviewedtheirdosagerecord.Studentsreceivingradiationexposureabove50mRforamonthlyreportmustprovideawrittenexplanationofthepossiblecauseofexposuretotheProgramDirector,withinoneweekofreceivingthereport.HOLDINGPATIENTSStudentradiographerswillnotholdpatientsduringradiographicprocedures.Thiscomplieswithcurrentradiationprotectionguidelines.Ifapatientrequiresassistancetomaintainapositionforaprocedure,mechanicalrestrainingdevices(cushions,etc.)shouldbeemployed.Otherwisearelativeorfriendwhoisnotpregnantornon-radiology(non-pregnant)personnelmayassistthepatient.Protectiveleadglovesandapronshouldbeprovidedandtheassistantshouldnotbeexposedtotheprimarybeam.DIRECTvs.INDIRECTCLINICALSUPERVISIONOFSTUDENTSUntilastudentachievesanddocumentscompetency(completionofclinicalcompetencyevaluation)inanygivenprocedure,allclinicalassignmentsmustbecarriedoutunderthedirectsupervisionofaqualifiedradiographer.Theparametersofdirectsupervisionare:
1. Aqualifiedradiographerreviewstherequestforexaminationinrelationtothestudent'slevelofachievement

REPEATINGRADIOGRAPHICIMAGESWheneverastudentisperformingarepeatradiographaregisteredtechnologistwillbepresentintheradiographicroomtosupervisetheprocedure.Thisincludesanyexaminationwhetherthestudenthaspassedtheirclinicalcompetencyevaluationonthisexaminationornot.TheprojectionrepeatedmustberecordedontheRepeatFormandsignedbythesupervisingtechnologist.APPROVINGRADIOGRAPHICIMAGESAregisteredtechnologistorradiologistmustreviewallradiographicimagingprocedurescompletedbyastudentbeforethepatientisreleasedfromthedepartment.Failuretodosoonthepartofthestudentwillrequireawrittenreportoftheincidenttobeprovidedtotheclinicalinstructoratthatfacility.DOCUMENTATIONOFALLRADIOGRAPHICPROCEDURESPERFORMEDBYTHESTUDENTStudentsmustdocumentallexamsperformedinclinicalontheUniversityofHartfordLogsheet.StatsheetsmustbecompletedandreturnedtotheDirectorofClinicalEducationalongwithlogsheetsattheendofeachsemester.PROFESSIONALLIABILITYINSURANCEAllstudentsarerequiredtohaveprofessionalliabilityinsurancecoveragepriortocommencingtheirclinicalexperience.ThisliabilitycoveragewillbeobtainedbytheUniversityofHartford.ATTENDANCEREQUIREMENTS9Therotationofstudentsthroughaclinicalfacilityenablesthestudenttoobtainthepracticalexperiencenecessarytolearntheskillsofanentry-levelradiographer/radiologictechnologist.Thestudenthastheobligationtotheirclinicalaffiliatetoattendhis/herregularlyscheduleddaysofclinicalexperience.Eachclinicalsyllabus(i.e.RAD320ClinicalExperienceI)willspecifytherequirednumberofclinicalhours,thenumberofclinicalcompetencyexaminationsandre-checkevaluationstobecompletedinorderforagradetobeassignedforthatspecificclinicalcourse.If,duetoextenuatingcircumstances,studentslack 9 Revised 2015, Reviewed 2016

Theclinicalsupervisoratthestudent’sassignedfacilitymayrequireastudenttoleavetheclinicalareauntilthestudentisincompliancewiththedresscode.Timemissedbythestudentfornon-compliancewiththedresscodewillbeattributedtotardiness.DECLAREDPREGNANCYPOLICY13Thedecisiontoinformtheprogramofapregnancyistheindividualstudent’sdecision.Thedecisionofapregnantstudenttoremainintheprogrambasedonherpregnancyisalsotheindividualstudent’sdecision.Ifthestudentdecidestoinformtheprogramfacultyofherpregnancy,notificationmustbeinwriting.OncethestudenthasdisclosedherpregnancyinwritingtotheRadiologicTechnologyProgramDirector,arrangementswillbemadewiththeRadiationControl/SafetyOfficerand/ortheRadiationPhysicistatherdesignatedclinicalaffiliateand/ortheRadiologicTechnologyProgramDirector.Thismeetingwillallowthestudentandtheradiationsafetyofficer/RadiologicTechnologyProgramDirectortodiscussanyadditionalmeasuresofradiationprotectionrequiredatthatfacilityduringthecourseofthestudent’spregnancy.TheRadiationControlOfficeorRadiationPhysicistwillalsoprovidethestudentwithacopyoftheNuclearRegulatoryCommission’sGuide8.13forthedeclaredpregnantworker.Afterreceivingradiationsafetycounseling,thestudentmustreadandsignaformacknowledgingthatshereceivedcounselingandunderstandsshemustimplementtheappropriatemeasurestoensurethesafetyoftheembryo/fetus.Followingthemeetingbetweenthestudentandradiationsafetypersonnel,arrangementsforthecompletionofthestudent’sclinicalexperienceswillbemadethroughtheradiographyprogramdirector.Withapprovalfromthestudent,accommodationsmaybemadeattheclinicalsiteinorderforthestudenttocompleteherclinicalrotations.Atalltimes,thestudentretainstherighttocompletetheRADprograminitsentiretywithoutmodification.Ifappropriatemodificationsareagreedupon,thestudentmayberequiredtocompletemake-upclinicalhourstoachieverequiredcompetence.Thestudentshouldmakeeveryeffortpossibletocontinuewiththeirnormalclassroomattendance.CompletionoftheprogramandeligibilitytositfortheARRTcertificationexaminRadiographyiscontingentuponthestudent’stimelycompletionofallprogramrequirements.Thedecisiontoinformtheprogramthatsheisnolongerpregnantistheindividualstudent’sdecision.Astudentmaywithdrawadeclarationofpregnancy,inwritingtotheProgramDirector,atanytime.Underthiscircumstance,thestudentretainstherighttocontinuetheirprogressintheRADprogramwithoutmodification.UNDECLAREDPREGNANCYPOLICY14Ifthestudentchoosesnottodeclareherpregnancyandnotifytheprogramfaculty,theprogramwillbeunabletoprovidethenecessaryaccommodationsforthestudentinordertoensureproperprotectiontotheembryo/fetus.However,itisthestudent’srighttocompletetheRADprograminitsentiretywithoutmodification.

STUDENTORPATIENTACCIDENTSAstudentinjuredasaresultoftheirdirectparticipationoftheirassigneddutiesduringtheirclinicalexperiencemayreceivetreatmentthroughtheemergencyservicesprovidedattheiraffiliateortheirpersonalphysician.Paymentforsuchservicesisthestudent'sresponsibility,asstudentsarenotthehospital’sorclinic’semployees.Inaddition,anincidentreportregardingthenatureoftheaccidentmustbecompletedbythestudentandforwardedtothedepartmentmanager.AnadditionalcopymustbeforwardedtotheRadiologicTechnologyProgramDirector.Intheeventthatastudentisinvolvedinaprocedurewhereapatientisinjured,thestudentmustinformthesupervisingtechnologistoftheirconductduringtheprocedure.Anincidentreportmustbecompletedbythestudenttoproperlyreflectthemechanismofinjury.AcopyoftheincidentreportmustbeforwardedtothedepartmentmanageroftheaffiliateaswellastheRadiologicTechnologyProgramDirector.Anincorrectexambeingperformed,orincorrectpatientbeingimagedalsowarrantthepreparationandforwardingofanincidentreport.STUDENTHEALTHINSURANCEVERIFICATIONTheUniversityofHartfordrequiresallstudentsenrolledintheprofessionalcomponentcoursestobecoveredbytheirownhealthinsurancepolicy,eitherthroughoutsidecoverageorthroughcoverageprovidedbyaUniversityapprovedcarrier.Studentsmustdemonstrateproofofmedicalinsurancecoverage,acopyoftheirmedicalinsurancecard,priortothecommencementoftheirfirstclinicalinternshiprotation.Studentswhodonotcomplywiththispolicywillbeprohibitedfromparticipatinginclinicalinternshiprotations.UNIVERSALPRECAUTIONSDuetotheassociatedriskofindividualsemployedinthehealthcarefieldforcontractingsomeinfectiousagent,eachstudentwillberequiredtoattendtheirclinicaleducationsetting'sIn-ServiceProgramforthefacility'spoliciesregardinguniversalprecautions.Thissessionwillbescheduledpriortothestudent'sfirstassigneddayofclinicalexperience.Inaddition,thetopicofuniversalprecautionsandtheproceduresandtechniquesemployedtoreducethetransmissionofinfectiousagentsarethoroughlycoveredinRAD310:PatientCareI,whichistaughtconcurrentlywiththestudent'sfirstclinicalexperiencecourse.LatexAllergiesLatexfreeproductsareprovidedateachclinicalsiteforthosestudentswhomayhavealatexallergy.Studentsmustutilizelatexfreeproductsforpatientswhoareallergictolatex.Nolatexproductsmustcomeincontactwiththepatient.EMPLOYMENTASATECHNOLOGISTAIDEConnecticut'slicensurelawforRadiologicTechnologistsDOESNOTALLOWunlicensedradiographerstooperateionizingradiationemittingequipmentunlessdirectlyrelatedtoanactivityassociatedwithanacademic/clinicalpracticewhiletheyareenrolledinanaccreditedprogram.Therefore,whilestudentsareenrolledintheUniversityofHartford'sRadiologicTechnologyProgramandareunlicensedtheycannotbeemployedasradiologictechnologists/radiographers.

UniversityofHartfordRadiologicTechnologyProgramstudentswhoareemployedinmedicalfacilitiesasaradiology(technologist)aidemustcomplywiththefollowingpractices:

5. ThisagreementappliestopositionsascomputedtomographyaidesorMRItechaidesaswellasradiographytechaides.
HEALTHINSURANCEPORTABILITYANDACCOUNTABILITYACT(HIPAA)ComplianceforStudentRadiographersinClinicalandAcademicSituationsStudentsmusthaveaccesstomedicalinformationregardingthepatient'sclinicalhistoryinordertoeffectivelyevaluatepatientsintheircareandensurethatproperradiographicexaminationshavebeenordered.AccordingtoHIPAAguidelinesstudentsarelimitedtoinformationonlynecessaryfortheperformanceoftheirdirectduties.Studentsmustnotdiscusspatientconditionsbyidentifyingtheirnamesinpublicareasofthemedicalfacility,forexamplecafeteriasorelevators,asthisviolatesthepatient'smedicalprivacy.StudentsmustalsobeawareofHIPAAforcomplianceinaddressingissuesrelatedtopatientidentificationinoralandwrittenreportspresentedasacomponentofanacademiccourse.Studentsareadvisedthatwhentheyprovidecasereportstheymaynotrevealanyinformationaboutpatientssuchasthespecificbirthdate,patientname,locationoftreatmentoranyinformationthatcouldbeusedtoidentifyaparticularpatient.Failuretocomplywiththeseguidelinesmayresultindismissalfromtheprogram.CLINICALGRIEVANCEPOLICY15Appealsrelatingtoaradiologictechnologyprogram’sfacultymembers’decisionsintheimplementationofaclinicalpolicycanbemadeonlyonthegroundsofdiscriminatory,unjustorcapriciousaction.Intheeventthatastudentfeelsthatanappealiswarranted,itisthestudent’sresponsibilitytoinitiatetheappealsprocedure.Theappealsprocedureshallnormallybeasfollows:
1. Thestudentshalldiscussthematterwiththefacultymemberassignedtotheclinicalcourse.Thismeetingmusttakeplacewithin10academicdaysoftheoccurrence.
