Head coach Mike McGuire, the 2014-15 Big South Coach of the Year, enters his fourth season at the helm of the Highlanders.4

Radford was outscored 16-5 in the first quarter of last Friday’ season opening loss at George Mason.16

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS ▪ The Highlanders look to build off one of the best

defensive seasons in program history after holding opponents to 53.3 points per game.

    ▪ Coming off a 70-56 season opening loss at George Mason on Nov. 11, Radford looks for its seventh consecutive season that the Highlanders have collected at least one win in their first two games of the season, dating back to 2010-11.

    ▪ In the season opening loss, Radford fell behind early, trailing 16-5 at the end of the first quarter. The Highlanders outscored the Patriots 17-13 in the fourth quarter, attempting a late comeback.

    ▪ The 70 Patriot points are the most the Highlanders have yielded since Dec. 18, 2015 at Wofford. The Highlander defense only allowed two opponents to score over 70 points in 2015-16.

SCOUTING DAVIDSON ▪ In three games to start the season, Davidson has

been outscored 203-135, including 42-22 in the opening quarter and 63-42 in the fourth quarter.

    ▪ After the matchup against the Highlanders, Davidson travels to Cancun, Mexico to participate in the Cancun Challenge. The Wildcats will take on Toledo and Idaho State in the challenge.

ADIÓS AISHA ▪ Radford will need to fill the void left by 2016 grad-

uate Aisha Foy, a two-time Big South Conference honoree.

    ▪ A threat from behind the 3-point line, Foy made 129, ranking fifth all-time.

    ▪ Foy finished her career with a .351 3-point field goal percentage, ranking fifth in program history.

LAST TIME AGAINST DAVIDSON ▪ Radford received double-figure scoring contributions

from five different players to propel the Highlanders to a 79-68 non-conference women’s basketball win over Davidson Wednesday inside the Dedmon Center.

    ▪ After falling behind by eight (19-11) with 2:04 remain-ing in the opening quarter, Radford responded with a 15-0 run that was capped by back-to-back 3-pointers from Jen Falconer and Aisha Foy.

    ▪ That momentum carried the Highlanders into break on top, 37-35.

    ▪ Radford could not put away the Wildcats until late in the fourth quarter behind a 10-0 run spanning 4:40.

    ▪ The Highlanders held Davidson without a field goal for nearly six minutes during their late-game surge.

    ▪ Radford connected on a season-high 51.8 percent of its shots, including an electrifying 7 of 11 mark from downtown.

    ▪ The Highlanders outrebounded Davidson, 41-35.

The Wildcats entered the game averaging 43.8 boards per contest.

    ▪ Twenty-one of the Highlanders’ 29 made field goals were assisted. RU topped the 20-assist mark in back-to-back games for the first time under head coach Mike McGuire. Worthy, Falconer and Foy dished out five dimes apiece.

    RADFORD WOMEN’S BASKETBALL....................................................................................................................................................................

Radford University officials introduced Mike McGuire on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 as the Highlanders’ seventh NCAA head women’s basketball coach in program history. Widely recognized as one of the up-and-coming head coaches in the country, McGuire has quickly laid a solid foundation for the program moving forward.

Despite a 2015-16 season ravaged by injuries, McGuire steered Radford to its most wins (18) since the 2007-08 season. The Highlanders, who tied for third in the Big South regular-season standings, advanced to the semifinals of the Big South tournament for the first time since 2013.

Defense was the cornerstone of Radford’s success. The Highlanders concluded the season ranked fifth in the na-tion in field-goal percentage defense (.333), 14th in scoring defense (53.3) and 16th in blocks per game (5.6).

Individually, two Radford players (Janayla White and Aisha Foy) were named to the All-Big South first team for the first time since 1992-93.

In just his second season at the helm (2014-15), McGuire guided the Highlanders to their third WNIT in school history. Radford, which finished with a 17-14 overall record, including a 14-6 Big South ledger, finished tied for second in the Big South regular-season standings. It was the Highlanders’ highest finish in the conference standings since 2010-11.

McGuire’s work did not go unnoticed as the conference’s 11 head coaches selected him Big South Coach of the Year, marking the sixth head coach in program history to earn the accolade.

The Highlanders’ 10-win improvement from the 2013-14 season to the 2014-15 season was tied for the sixth-best

    turnaround in the nation.

In addition to his coaching responsibilities, McGuire is the Big South Conference Captain, a role he will serve until 2018. He is also the women’s basketball head coach representative from the Big South Conference on the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee, which is a three-year commitment.

Before Radford, McGuire spent 2008-13 as an assistant coach at the University of Richmond where he helped lead the Spiders to five straight postseason berths and a 101-60 overall record. For the second consecutive season in 2012-13, Florida Basketball Magazine named McGuire one of the top assistant coaches in the nation, and at the conclusion of the 2011-12 season, National Basketball Insider recognized him as one of the Top-14 Mid-Major assistant coaches in the country.

The Spiders posted three 20-win seasons during his ten-ure, including an appearance in the Atlantic 10 Tournament

    championship game in 2009.

At Richmond, McGuire served as the scouting coordinator. He was also charged with scheduling and the recruitment and the development of post players in the program. He also served as the academic mentor for perimeter players.

Prior to his move to Richmond, McGuire led Hidden Valley High School (Roanoke, Va.) to back-to-back Virginia Group AA state basketball titles in 2007 and 2008. He posted a 55-5 overall record while leading the Titans.

McGuire is a 2000 graduate of Roanoke College where he spent one season after matriculating as the assistant coach for the men’s basketball program. In that role, he served as the recruiting coordinator and junior varsity head coach. The Maroons posted a 17-10 record in his only season as an assistant.

McGuire and his wife, Nataleigh, reside in Riner with their daughters, Harper and Ellie.

George Mason opened the contest with an early 12-2 lead, highlighted by a 10-point swing on seven Radford turnovers. Chinyere Bell contributed five points during the run. The Highlanders ended the Patriot run as Destinee Walker found Lydia Rivers in the paint for a layup as Radford headed into the second quarter trailing 16-5 after committing eight opening quarter turnovers. Walker opened the second quarter with four straight points to cut the early deficit to 16-9 at the 9:17 mark. After Radford cut the lead to seven, the Patriots rattled off eight straight points as Tiffany Padgett’s 3-pointer forced a Highlander timeout, trailing 24-9 with 7:06 remaining in the second quarter. Coming out of the timeout, Radford’s offense started clicking as Rachael Ross and Sydney Nunley collected back-to-back layups, pulling the Highlanders within 28-19. Khiana Johnson followed with a jumper at the top of the key for her first collegiate points, cutting the Patriot lead to 30-21 with 2:11 remaining in the first half. After the Johnson jumper, George Mason closed out the opening half on a 7-2 run as Patriots took the ball coast-to-coast with five seconds on the clock. Kari Wright hit a running 3-pointer to beat the buzzer, sending George Mason into the locker room with a 37-23 edge. George Mason shot 40-percent in the first half, while making 11 of 14 free throws. Radford only got two shots to fall in the first quarter, but added 18 points in the second quarter on six baskets and 5 for 7 shooting from behind the charity stripe. The third quarter saw a three-minute span in which both teams only made one field goal, a Nunley jumper at the 3:39 mark. In the span the two in-state foes made 11 free throws. Claudia Quevedo knocked down a 3-pointer to cut the George Mason lead to 49-36, before the Patriots closed out the quarter on a 7-0 run. Radford outscored George Mason 17-13 in the fourth quar-ter on three 3-pointers, but wasn’t enough as the Patriots cruised to a 70-56 season opening victory.
