Read, reflect, create!

In your small team groups you are going to follow along in the text as I read the first chapter of the story in the middle of your tables.

Before Reading: Know that these two chapters are from a book called “The Phantom Tollbooth” by

While Reading: Think about who Milo is as a character, start formulating some predictions about his personality and the mood that he is setting for the story. Have you ever felt like Milo?

After Reading: Talk with the people in your group about the following discussion questions: What is a destination? What does it mean to “have your destination in

mind?” We is the risk if we don’t have a destination in mind?

Our “destination in mind”

My BIG GOAL for you this year: What you WILL do by the end of the year in my

language arts class!

100% of students will be able to read, write, speak and act with confidence, clarity and purpose. 100% of students will score a 3 or a 4 on their End

of Grade 6th grade ELA test. Students will write a 5 paragraph persuasive essay

that averages a Level 3 on the E3 Essay Rubric compared to grade-level anchor examples.

Our “destination” in mind, cont. My vision for you this year:

What you WILL accomplish this year in my language arts class!

This year you WILL read, write and speak with confidence, clarity and purpose in order to communicate effectively in an ever changing and evolving society. As an active participant in a society of progress, you WILL be able to advocate and act as a fierce leader in the fight for their own education as well as the education of others. With energy, grit, and sense of common you will independently seek out insightful opportunities to gain knowledge, learn from your mistakes and past attempts in order to lead with empathy and a generosity of spirit, both inside and outside of the classroom.

Our “map” to get there

Milo needed a map to get to his destination, just like we will need a mind to get to ours.

In your small groups, using the crayons in the box in the center of your table and the paper lining the center, I want you to list all the things you personally will have to do to be able to: 1. Get a ¾ on your language arts EOG 2. Write a 5 paragraph persuasive paper that score a level three

on the the E3 Essay Rubric (a level three is the best you can do!)Some things you might list could include: studying

hard, completing my homework, reading EVERY night!

Page 8: Radiant, Rousing and Relentless Readers!

Now…

Choose one of the things you wrote on your “map” and make that one of your personally goals for the year!

Such as: This year in 6th grade I am going to read for 30 minutes every night so that I can get a 4 on my language arts EOG.

Once you have this goal in mind, write it down on one of the post-it notes in you team box and then stick the post-it up on your blocks goal chart!
