Cavotec Micro-control has always focu-sed on three key elements when makingadvanced Radio Remote Controls: reliabi-lity, safety and innovation. With over 20years of experience Cavotec Micro-con-trol has always ensured the highest levelof safety in its systems.
Our deliveries to high safety industrieslike the offshore oil industry show thatour systems fulfil the most stringentrequirements from our customers andthe market. This is why Cavotec Micro-control RRC’s have been certified by lea-ding institutes such as ATEX and IEC.
Cavotec Micro-control has developed itsRadio Remote Control systems in closeco-operation with the main operatorswithin the maritime and offshore sector. This ensures that when we design andbuild our systems, they are built to satisfyour customers needs and all formal requi-rements related to operational safety.
Improved safety through RRCThe use of wireless operator panelsimprove the integral safety of the com-plete system as the operator can place
himself in a designated safe area and ata safe distance from the machine or unitbeing controlled.
In applications such as offshore oil-dril-ling and mining it is often a necessity tobe placed away from heavy equipmentthat is being hoisted, moved or lifted. Atthe same time the operator can positionhimself to have an optimal view of theoperation, outside any dangerous area.
The use of wireless technology furtherenables the operator to move freely andto act quickly in any emergency situations.
In critical situations time is of the essenceand having the emergency stop at theterminal enables the operator to actquickly. By pressing the emergency stopbutton the operator can completely stopany operation within tenths of a second.
Safety built into the systemOur systems feature a number of safetymeasures that are built in as a standard. In particular the redundant monitoring ofthe Emergency Stop System and the useof both a main processor and an additio-nal safety processor, are worth mentio-
ning. These two processor systems areimplemented on totally different plat-forms using different design and softwa-re. This method is normally only used inmore complex systems, like for instancein control systems for aircrafts. Thismeans that one processor system failuredoes not affect the other.
Directives and StandardsThe Cavotec Micro-control radio remotecontrol systems have been developed, manufactured, tested and certified inaccordance with relevant internationaldirectives and standards. The radio con-trols conforms with EU R&TTE directiveEN 300 220 and EMC/ERM standards forShort Range Devices. Systems are manu-factured with Emergency Stop accordingto EN-954-1, Cat 2, 3 and 4.
Cavotec Microcontrol is certified as amanufacturer of equipment and systemsfor use in potentially explosive atmosphe-res, (ATEX) Directive 94/9/EC.
General InformationSafety in RRC systems
Cavotec Micro-control RRC's are among thesafest in the world. They are designed to beused in the most harsh working environmentswithout compromise on safety or reliability.

Radio Remote ControlMC-2-3 and MC-2-5
The MC-2-3 and MC-2-5 standardoperator terminals have been designedto provide one of the safest, ergonomic, cost effective, pushbutton remotecontrol for industrial applications withfeatures normally only found on top endsystems.
Both terminals are equipped with adisplay showing operational information. The MC-2-3 has 6 two steppushbuttons, 4 single step pushbuttonsand emergency stop pushbutton. TheMC-2-5 has an additional 4 two steppushbuttons. The units are poweredwith 2 AA batteries providing 40 hourscontinuous safe operation.
Both systems have easily configurablestandard settings based upon standardapplications. User options for PIN unlock
access only, battery saving timeout, automatic channel search are accessedvia the standard display andpushbuttons. Security is maintained withaccess codes.
The display showing signal and batterystatus also incorporates feedback fromthe machine being operated. This can beconfigured to show the load on a craneor winch for example.
The base unit of the system, MC-IRX-LITE, has preset selectable programs forease and flexibility. These includeinterlocking between motions andseparate second step relays for the twostep pushbuttons. A log of the last 10operating sessions can give indicationsabout usage and radio signal quality.
The MC-2-3 provides a simple and totallysafe solution to many radio remote needs.

Radio Remote ControlMC-3-6
The MC-3-6 is the system to use whenabsolute reliability is of the utmostimportance. An area to which thesystem is very well suited is materialhandling, where long start-upprocedures are the unadvoidableconsequence of a stop.
To guarantee this the terminal has a twobattery option which allows constantoperation, and “hot swapping” ofbatteries. The MC-3-6 is specially suitedfor two way communication, and hasthe option to house the well provensemi-duplex radio from Cavotec Micro-control. The terminal is fitted with adisplay which has been designed toprovide maximum visibility to theoperator. Depending on individual user
preferences, alarm messages can befollowed by audible alarm, and thedisplay lighting up.
With the optional double set of batteriesMC-3-6 system uninterrupted operationcan be achieved.
Options• Duplex operation.• Feedback on display. • Audio alarm.• Alarm signals may trigger the display
back light for a pre-set time.• Frequency selector.• Variety of joysticks - also push-and-stay
versions.

Radio Remote ControlMC-3000
The MC-3000 is one of the most flexibleradio remote control systems in themarket. Everything, from simple controlfunctions to complete processsupervision, can be done from the samesystem. This radio remote control cansolve any direct hydraulic and electriccontrol function and provide serialcommunication with most known PLCand frequency converters.
An important additional feature iscommunication through the TCP/IPprotocol. Included in this product familyare the MC-3000 Ex, for use in Ex zonesand the MC-3000 Extreme, which hasbeen developed to resist most extremeoperating environments.
The MC-3000 Extreme version has beenspecially developed for a tough maritimeenvironment. It meets ingress protectionnorm IP66/67 with regards to encapsulationof the electronic parts and operatorcontrol. The plug-in battery, battery
charger and extra battery ensure acontinuous operation without anydisruption.
Both the MC-3000 and MC-3000Extreme are constructed from specialimpact resisting and acid-proof plastic.
Options• Full duplex communication with
feedback to lamps or LCD display.• Advanced coordination allows for the
control of one machine from severaltransmitters and visa versa.
• Direct serial communication betweenthe receiver and PLC.
• Soft start/stop of the analog functions• Programmable output characteristics

Radio Remote Controls for use in explosive areasMC-3000 Ex and MC-3-6 Ex
The MC-3000 Ex and MC-3-6 Ex radioremote controls provide a secure and fle-xible control of many different types ofmachinery. To a wide extent they featurethe same functionality as the "ordinary"RRC’s. One addition however is the pos-sibility to use a cable control. This provi-des an extra failsafe against shutdown ifa fault occurs in one if the other typesof communication.
Both systems can be delivered with sim-plex or duplex communication. Theduplex communication option allows theoperator to receive messages (alarmmessages, status indications etc.)through led’s, control display, indicatorinstruments, etc.
Additionally the base units can be deli-vered with a serial interface for the mostcommon bus standards on market today. On request, they can be deliveredwithout explosion proof and increasedsafety encapsulation if this is deemednot necessary. The battery used in theterminal is intrinsically safe. As a conse-quence the exchanging of the batterycan be done in an explosive area.
Typical applications for these radio remo-te controls are offshore oil and gasequipment, mining applications andmaritime cranes and winches.
