Welcome to the second issue of the UAMS Radiology Residency Newsletter. We havefinally wrapped up the residency interview season. Once again, a great deal ofpreparation has gone into the interview process. I would like to thank our interns, residents and staff who graciously offered their time to help in this very important task.In all, we interviewed 111 applicants. While the past three years have seen thedesirability for radiology residency positions go down across the nation, this year appearsto be much more competitive. Step 1 board scores of our applicants averaged 241.3 andStep 2 scores averaged 248.8. We interviewed 92 male and 19 females, a ratio reflectiveof the applicant pool this year. These numbers represent 73 MD candidates, 38 DOcandidates, 93 American candidates and 18 international medical graduates. In total, wehad 522 individuals apply to our programthis year.

Our residents and interns enjoyed pre-interview dinners the night before each interview, hosting the applicants at The Flying Saucer. As indicated, the quality of the applicantswas high, making the job of choosing the top candidates more daunting. Thankfully, dueto both the high caliber of those who choose to apply, and those who are invited tointerview, we are likely to be very happy with the match results, nomatter how they turnout.

It is once again time to start planning next year’s Radiology Boot Camp to welcome thenext generation of R1’s into the fold. I hope that interns, residents and staff are makingplans to attendthe annual Buffalo River Canoe Trip the third Saturday in July.
