Olympians’ limelight

Their   performance   –   caught   on  camera   –   featured   in   TVNZ   news  highlights   at   4.30pm   the   same   day,  and   also   on   Te   Karere,   Sky   and  Te   Kaea   news   programmes   in   the  evening.  And  they  made  headlines  in  the  Waikato  Times  the  next  morning.  It   wasn’t   a   “huge   effort”   to

celebrate   the   athletes’   homecoming,  teacher   Angela   Massey   told   the  Chronicle,   but   it  was   certainly   a   big  day   and   an   unforgettable   one.   “The  kids   were   beside   themselves   ...   so  inspired.”  She   told   them   there   was   no

reason  they  couldn’t  get  a  gold  medal  themselves   one   day.   “They   (our  athletes)   had   a   dream   too,”   Angela  reminded   her   young   twins   Jack   and  Sasha   Kirkwood   who   were   buzzing  with  excitement.Friend   Margaret   Dillon   was

equally  enthused.  “There  was  no  way  my   boys   were   going   to   school,   this  was  a  day  they  are  going  to  remember  for   the   rest   of   their   lives,”   she   told  reporters  at  the  airport.

Her   sons   Awatea   and   Sean   –  Raglan   Area   School   students   like  Jack   and   Sasha   –   were   pictured   in

rowing   gold   medallist   Hamish  Bond   and   proudly   displaying   their  RAGLAN  LOVES  YOU  poster. They’d  all  left  home  at  6am  after

what  Angela   describes   as   a   spur-of-the-moment  decision  the  night  before  to  welcome  athletes  when  they  touched

from   the   Games.   Friend   and   former  Raglan   Area   School   teacher   Trish

in   Dubai   and   “passionate   about   all  things  New  Zealand”  –  joined  them.

very   nearly   stymied   their   efforts   but  they  made   it,   albeit   a   bit   late,   and   a  TVNZ  news   team  “spun   round”   and

and  banners  in  hand  –  at  the  end  of  an  interview  with  BMX  silver  medallist  Sarah  Walker.Moments   later,   recalls   Angela,

“the   teacher   in   me”   got   everyone  singing   the   national   anthem   in   te  reo  Maori   and   English.   “It   was   just  magical   ...   people   had   tears   in   their  eyes.”The   small   Raglan   group   waited

too   for   the   arrival   of   further   Games  competitors  and  chef  de  mission  Dave

singled  out  by  reporters,  he  told  them  he  was  there  because  Dave  Currie  was  from  Raglan.        Edith  Symes

Raglan   residents   were   to   get   this

shop   at   what’s   being   touted   as  a   “proper”   supermarket   for   the  town.

Raglan  Four  Square  closed  its  doors  for   the   last   time  at  7   last  night   and   the  building   was   scheduled   to   reopen   as  a   SuperValue   supermarket   at   noon  today,   Thursday,   following   a   blessing  by   kaumatua   Sean   Ellison   and   a   brief  opening  ceremony. This   morning’s   closure   was   mainly

to  allow  extra  time  to  put  up  the  new  red,  white  and  black  signage  and  to  get  new  computers  and  tills  ready  to  go.

But   the   work   involved   more   than  rebranding   or   technical   requirements,  and  shoppers  can  expect  to  notice  a  host  of  changes  over  and  above  what  they’ve  already  seen  in  the  past  month  or  so.Supermarket  general  manager  Shane

Temata  says  the  overnight  addition  of  the  likes  of  Homebrand  and  Select  Signature  Range  products  to  the  shelves  –  products  that  couldn’t  be  introduced  until  the  new  signage  went  up  –  means  that  all-up  the  new  SuperValue  will  stock  a  staggering  3500-odd   more   lines   than   did   Four  Square.

specials   has   been   distributed   about  town,  Shane   stresses   that’s   only   a   taste  of   things   to  come.    “Our  prices  will  be  really  competitive  and  we’ll  have  really  good   specials   –   about   600   a  week,”  he  says. Many  new  products  will  be  regularly

on   special,   too,   “saving   shoppers  more  on  the  things  they  really  need”.The   big   increase   in   product   lines

might   seem   almost   an   impossibility  in   a   store   that  –   initially   at   least  –  will

of  aisles,  but  Shane   says   the  key   is   the  greater  capacity  of   the  all-new  racks  of  shelving.“We  want   to  accommodate  as  much

as   we   can   aesthetically   while   leaving

in   the   development,   and   that   another  two  stages  are  in  the  planning.    Owner/operators   Richard   and

Jane   Jacobsen   and   the   SuperValue  chain  –  which  is  under  the  umbrella  of  Progressive,  best  known  in   the  North  Island  for  the  Countdown  chain  –  have  already   talked   of   pushing   into   the  storage  areas  out  the  back  and  adding

Shane   also   mentions   the   new  checkout   system   “will   speed  everything  up”  and  help  reduce  queues  at  peak  holiday  time.Meanwhile   he’s   apologised   to

customers   for   the   inconvenience  caused   by   all   the   shifting   around   of  stock  in  recent  weeks,  and  has  thanked  staff  for   their  patience  and  for  all   the  extra  work  they’ve  taken  on.    “We’ve  had  to  move  everything  three  times  in  the  changeover,”  he  points  out.

Sports News:

A  wave   of   disbelief   has  met  Waikato

District  Council’s  decision  to  appoint

a   Hamilton   real   estate   agent   to   try

empty-looking  wharf  building.

Critics   say   they   cannot   fathom   why   a  Lodge   commercial   property   specialist   has  been   given   the   job   over   Raglan   realtors   to  market  the  building  for  lease. And   their   concern   has   been   heightened

by  rumours  doing  the  rounds  –  after  a  claim  made   at   last   week’s   Raglan   Community  Board  meeting  –  that  potential  lessees  have  been   told   no-one   could   come   out   to   show  them   around   the   $1.9  million   building   and  that  they  should  look  in  the  windows. The   issue   came   up   in   the   public   forum

preceding   the   community   board   meeting,  where   Raglan   Community   House   co-ordinator   Chrissy   Hodkinson   asked   simply  “Why  Lodge?”  Raglan   ward   councillor   Clint   Baddeley

referred  to  the  matter  being  an  “operational”  issue  –  in  other  words  one  handled  by  council  staff   based   in   Ngaruawahia   –   but   board  chairman  Rodger  Gallagher’s   response  was  less   diplomatic.       “It’s   another   example   of  council   disengaging   from   the   community,”  he  complained.Chrissy  told  the  Chronicle  she  raised  the

issue  because  “it  struck  me  as  kind  of  odd”  that  Lodge  were  doing  the  marketing.      She  said   the   council   needed   reminding   there  were  agents  here  who  could  handle  the  work  instead.

The  evening  before  the  community  board  meeting,   the  same   issue  was  discussed  at  a  regular  meeting   of   the  Raglan  Chamber   of  Commerce   board.     Chairwoman   Stephanie  Philp   said   board   members   couldn’t  understand   why   the   council   did   not   use  Raglan  agents.“It   doesn’t   make   any   sense,   no   logical

sense,”   she   said.   “They   should   have   gone  with  local  people.”A   chamber   representative   who

subsequently  went   along   to   the   community  board   meeting   said   she   shared   Chrissy’s  concerns   but   was   encouraged   that   Clint  undertook  to  take  the  matter  up  with  council.Meanwhile   it’s   understood   Lodge   have

rung  at   least  one  Raglan   real  estate  agency  to   ask   if   it  would   “conjunct”  with   them   in  marketing   the   wharf   leases,   and   that   the  agency   is   now   obliged   to   do   so   if   there   is  interest  from  potential  commercial  tenants. However,   one   agent   approached   by   the

Chronicle  for  comment  was  pessimistic  over  the  appeal  of  the  wharf  building.    “The  major  concerns  that  ring  in  my  mind  are  the  [high]  rates  and  the  lack  of  parking,  especially  on  a  nice  day  when  a  lot  of  boats  are  out,”  he  said.   “Retail   depends   on   easy   parking   –   I

wouldn’t  sign  a  lease  without  it.    It’s  going  to  be  hard  getting  that  kind  of  money  down  there.”The   “kind   of   money”   the   council   has

been   seeking   in   annual     rent   for   the   seven  premises  is  understood  to  range  from  around  $30,000   for   a   large   space   fronting   where  the  trawlers  moor  to    half  that  amount  for  a

Marketing  the  Raglan  wharf  leases  may   prove   a   challenge   but   there’s   a  mood  of  positivity  now  in  the  Raglan  CBD,   with   one   commercial   landlord  optimistic   that   town   retail   premises  will  soon  be  “pretty  well  full”.  He  told  the  Chronicle  he  believed

the  uptown  bakery  could  reopen  under  new   management   as   early   as   next  month  and  a  new  restaurant  in  the  old  Zaragoza  premises  by  October.    There  was  also  interest  in  the  former  Splurge  shop  on  Bow  Street,  and  the  reletting  of   the  old  Raglan  Information  Centre  premises  around  the  corner  in  Wainui  Road  was  close  to  a  “done  deal”.Meantime   the   increasingly   busy

“Lost  Lane”  precinct  off   the  seaward  side  of  Wainui  Road  has  gained  a  new  outdoor   eatery,   Juantanamera.     From  a   shiny   black   caravan   there,   Juan  Vicente   Gomez   is   cooking   up   and  serving   –   on   weekends   only   at   this  stage   –   what   he   describes   as   classic  Venezuelan  food.

next  year  there  is  a  really  good  chance  the  teams  will  do  very  well  in  their  grades.    One  thing  that  won’t  be  lacking  is  enthusiasm,  no  matter  what.        Sue  Russell

againRaglan  Club  Inc.  has  a  proud  record  of

achievement   at   the   annual   Whangamata  Club’s   mixed   sport   tournament.       By  bringing  home   the   trophy  again   this  year,  talented   all-rounder   Maureen   Wahanga  has  won  the  pairs  trophy  three  times  in  the  last  seven  years.    This  year  Thomas  Lord,  who  works  part-time  at  the  club  driving  the  courtesy   van,   partnered  Maureen   as   they  tackled  8  ball,  indoor  bowls  and  darts.“I   wasn’t   expecting   to   do   so   well   at

the   indoor   bowls   part   but   I   played   better  than   expected   and   with   Maureen’s   skill  level   in  all   three  events  we  were  a  strong  combination”,  says  Thomas. Both   plan   to   go   back   to  Whangamata

next  year  to  defend  their  title.

“I  really  enjoy  going  to  Whangamata  and   seeing   the   same   players   year   after  year.     The   competition   is   full-on   so   it  was   great   to   bring   the   trophy   back   to  Raglan  again”,   says  Maureen  who  won  the  event  in  2011  and  in  2006.      Sue  Russell

The  Raglan  11th  grade  team  have  had  a  great  season  and  secured  themselves  a

up   against   Melville,   who   they   had  already   played   twice   and   lost   on   both  occasions.   However,   the   team   brought

Heather   Park   against   the   favourites.  Melville   had   slow   start   and   Raglan  capitalized   on   their  mistake   and   scored

opportunity  to  score  again,  going  to  the  break  with  a  10-0  lead.  In  the  second  half  Melville   never   looked   like   they  were   a  threat  and  Raglan  ran  in  another  two  tries  and  a  conversion  to  win  the  game  22-0.

Heather   Park   against   Te   Rapa   on  Saturday,   so  get   along   to   the  game  and  support  them.Congratulations   to   the   Team   and
