Dear Editor,The spirit of giving in the Whaingaroa community is

wonderful. A few months ago we extended the invitation to give a little help to a community with few resources, on the other side of the world. In the winter it can be very cold in this more northern part of India (Rikhia, Bihar). Whaingaroa joined others around New Zealand to give a little warmth to the children of India by applying their love and creativity, in a very practical way, to a simple knitting pattern.

Students of yoga, their friends, families, work mates and their friends and whanau, as well as a great number of people who have absolutely no connection to yoga and some who have never even knitted before, took up the invitation, (without any thought of what they would ‘get out of it’ for themselves), to do a little good for someone else whom they don’t know at all. This is the true spirit of Seva (service), containing the very best of our thoughts, feelings, love and affection, sympathy and compassion, in order to uplift another being. It was clearly demonstrated by the kindness of so many people in Whaingaroa.

To those who could see where a little extra help was needed (including the Raglan Book and Gift Centre), and who provided wool and needles, thank you. To the Whaingaroa Knitting group and all others in this community who have set aside their own personal challenges and concerns as well as their own perceived limitations (time, money and energy), to do something helpful for another (whom they will never meet), my heart says thank you. Thank you for being the evidence right here, in the community of Whaingaroa and elsewhere, that the heart of Love still beats strongly. Thank you for reminding me of the value of Seva (service) as a true practice for the expansion of consciousness and reminding me of the deep value of the call of Swami Sivananda Saraswati, to...

“Do all the good you can in all the ways you can, to all the people you can, in every place you can, at all the times you can with all the strength, love and heart and interest you can, as long as ever you can.”In deepest gratitude, Atmavidya, Ruapuke

Remmers may have it all over Raggers in the privileged lifestyle stakes but Games chef de mission Dave Currie backs the likes of his hometown when it comes to producing medal-winning talent.

Research showed the country’s champions came predominantly from provincial New Zealand, he told 30-odd locals at Raglan Sunset Motel’s conference room last week as guest speaker for the year’s final Chamber of Commerce evening meeting.

And driving the kids to school from Remuera for instance just didn’t cut the mustard, he reckoned.

He laughingly agreed with one enthusiastic local’s lighthearted quip, from the floor, that running barefoot over thistles at Te Uku School’s cross-country was far more likely to produce tough kids.

Despite having managed New Zealand’s elite athletes on the world stage for 10 years now – first the Sydney Paralympics, followed by two more full Olympics and three Commonwealth Games – Dave admitted at last Wednesday week’s meeting that the Delhi experience was the “most difficult” event of his life.

Ongoing security, hygiene and safety concerns, he said, tested his passion for a job which aimed to ensure all athletes were in the optimum environment to achieve their personal best.

With 71 countries arriving to a state of chaos and unreadiness – toilets blocked, fuses blown and plumbing falling apart – “it was tough at the beginning for all of us”.

But it all turned out fantastic in the end, he conceded – a “very positive Games for us and for India as well”.

The Indians loved the New Zealanders, Dave told those at the meeting. They “embraced” the team and chanted “kiwi, kiwi, kiwi” in support whenever they could. And though Dave saw Delhi leadership as corrupt and self-serving it was the young people, he said, who took a real pride in the performance of their athletes.

With our high-profile historic connection to India through Kiwi great Sir Edmund Hillary, Dave wanted our athletes to emulate the mountaineer who conquered Everest – “knocked the bastard off” – back in 1953.

To this end, he said, the physical environment and all the imagery that went with Sir Ed was set up in Delhi to impress upon the team the concept of overcoming obstacles to be successful. Dave brought in the sons of both Sir Ed and his fellow climber Tenzing Norgay to talk about their

dads, and Peter Hillary spoke directly from Sir Ed’s diary.

Dave told the chamber he felt “privileged to be involved in it all, and to see young New Zealanders committed to what they do”.

It took “unbelievable commitment and courage” to compete at world-class level, he said. “It’s hard, gruelling and extraordinarily tough.”

Organisers of Raglan’s two-yearly Food Bank Drive have good reason to have their fingers crossed for a bumper community response when collectors hits the streets this Saturday – the number of local households which can’t make ends meet, they say, has never been greater.

Volunteers will be out and about picking up grocery items or donations from all households between Greenslade Road to the east and Rakaunui Street on the west side of town.

And all being well, says co-ordinator Maree Haworth, there’ll be enough collected by the end of the day to stock the shelves of the foodbank’s Bow Street base for a good few months.

Three vans and a truck will be on the road from 10 in the morning, she says, with a team of volunteers wearing Surfside Church T-

shirts picking up the goodies which later get distributed to a “whole range” of people in the community who are finding the going too tough.

“That’s what Surfside is about,” insists Maree, “supporting people in our community.” And with a recent 16 percent increase in Raglan of people on benefits the need is greater than ever, she reckons.

Judging by the two “hugely successful” drives in the past, Maree’s expecting Saturday’s supplies to last through Christmas into January and February.

The local foodbank feeds about 10 needy families or pensioners every week of the year with a load of groceries and a meat voucher, she adds. Its service runs on donations and voluntary help, mainly from the churches.

Maree’s also excited at a new initiative which began last week in tandem with Raglan

Four Square – which already serves as a drop-off point for non-perishable items of food – in which shoppers are encouraged to add $5 or $10 donations for the foodbank to their grocery totals.

She reminds people too that excess fruit and vegies from their gardens are always gratefully accepted at the foodbank opposite the Community House in Bow Street. Any contributions can either be dropped off when the bank’s open on Monday and Friday afternoons, between 1 and 3pm, or a pick-up arranged by phoning the church on 825 5199. Edith Symes

Essence Hair beauty’s summer celebration

The next two weeks appear to be very exciting times at Vinnies. Firstly, on 11 November 2010, Mexican Night returns by popular demand.

Following the terrific turnout and fantastic response, Vinnies will once again convert itself into your favourite Mexican cantina. Featuring the Mexican classics, enchiladas, burritos, quesadillas....and more, it’s time to call your mates, clear your calendar, book the babysitter and book your table.

Please call between 11am and 8pm on 825 7273 Wed-Sun to secure your time and table. We look forward to making this night even better than last time. Join us for the fiesta. Dinner service starts at 5 pm and goes until late.

Cocktail Lounge Night with Chanelle Davis

Then on 17 November 2010 Kiwi recording artist Chanelle Davis graces Vinnies with her soulful musical beauty.

To add to the evening, Vinnies will have a special cocktail and nibbles menu, which will add to the lounge feeling.

Chanelle Davis’ music has been compared to Norah Jones shaken up with a healthy dose of self-depreciating humour.

Her second album Since Yesterday, release date 3 November, was recorded and mastered by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound in New York. Her first album, Better Than Alone, received a 5 star review in The Waikato Times, describing her music as ‘fresh, vibrant, and sure to appeal to a wide range of listeners’.

The evening starts at 8pm, with no cover charge, so all you need to do is come and enjoy. We look forward to seeing you there.

An onsite blessing tomorrow, Friday, will signal Raglan’s new Museum and Information Centre is finally about to become a reality.

The 8am ceremony will clear the way for the old museum building, Raglan’s original fire station, and an adjacent toilet block to be demolished.

Work on the replacement million-dollar museum – which has been a long time coming – will begin early next year on virtually the same Wainui Road site overlooking Kopua estuary, and the new community facility is scheduled for completion in June.

Handling the work will be Hamilton-based Livingstone Building NZ Ltd, the successful tender with a contract price of $867,363. A contingency sum of $160,000 along with money already outlayed brings the total project spend to an estimated $1.329 million.

If the project does run over budget the council will call on its last year’s contingency fund, up to a maximum of another $114,000.

The museum project comes effectively at no extra direct cost to Raglan ratepayers as it will be funded by grants, agencies and asset sales.Edith Symes

Chamber of CommerceQ: Are your meetings open to the public?

A: Yes and No. It depends which meeting you are talking about.

Our “main” speaker night is a public meeting. This is for both members and visitors. Each year we have five of these meetings that feature a keynote speaker. This year we have been privileged to have Debbie Mayo-Smith, Sarah Trotman, Nandor Tanczos, Ernie Newman and most recently, Dave Currie. The Board of the Chamber has been thrilled that “little ole Raglan” has managed to secure these speakers, some if not all of them normally ask $1000 - $3000 an appearance. In each case they have waived their fee, or significantly reduced it.

We would love to see more people come to these evenings. They really are superb. If you are a visitor then all you pay is $15.00 at the door. Our next speaker night will be in February 2011 and will be well advertised in this paper.

The other meeting that is open to the public is our Monthly Networking Breakfast meeting. Our last one for the year will feature Annah Stretton, on Wednesday 10th November at Zaragoza 7.30am. There is no charge for this meeting. Just the cost of your breakfast.

Business Tip of the MonthWritten by Alan Vink - Chairperson

How Agile Are You? As I consult and interact with a variety of organisations from small-medium enterprises (SME’s) and not-for-profits, all of them have one thing in common:- they want to see forward motion, progress, movement from “here to there”. A newish idea that is talked about a lot in organisational life these days, particularly in these times of recession, is the ability of organisations to be nimble, adaptive and agile.

What this means is your ability as a business to respond quickly to the changing environment (marketplace) that you are operating in.

If we go back even 10 years certainly 15 years there were certain “rules of thumb” or benchmarks that conventional business wisdom said you needed to stick to. Take for example clothes retailing. 100% (or more) mark-up was the norm and fill your shop with as much stock as you can. That no longer works. Now clothes retailers have less stock on the shelves, offer free alterations and are keen to move the stock at a faster rate, and if they don’t have your exact fit, they will get it in for you within 24-48 hours. This says nothing about the affect the Internet is having on the marketplace. Look at how many car yards have closed shop in the last 2 years.

So the “trick” is to be inquisitive, be creative, be innovative and with the intention to stay as agile and nimble as you can. So off to the gym you go!

Old museum finally history

Sail into summerThere’s been nautical-themed fun aplenty around Raglan over the past few weeks and it’s all been down to the Raglan Sailing Club. The group, which aims to get people out on the water and having fun, has organised several events around town to coincide with the start of their summer season.

If you popped into the Old School Arts Centre recently you may have caught Seafarers and the Seven Seas, a nautical exhibition celebrating the relationship between man and the sea. Treasurer of the Sailing Club Clare Wimmer says the exhibition attracted lots of interest. “It was really busy over Labour Weekend,” she says. “We featured local artists and some from the Waikato.” Then last Saturday the Club organised a quiz night, also at the Old School, to raise funds for a kids’ sailing camp. “We’re trying to raise awareness of the Club,” says Clare, whose whole family are members and go along to the regular sailing days. “It’s a really positive family experience where people get together and have fun.”

Commodore of the Club Chris Mitchell certainly knows a thing or two about sailing. Chris and his partner Yann spent ten years island-hopping around the Caribbean in a sailing boat that they built themselves. Chris reckons we’re incredibly lucky in Raglan to be surrounded by so much water. “There’s so many places to go sailing,”

he says. “We’re teaching life skills that stay with you for the rest of your life.”

R a g l a n Sailing Club was started by Simon Kearns about three years ago. Sailing days, which take place twice a month on either a Saturday or Sunday to coincide with the high tides, involve a variety of different activities; from safety rundowns to practical exercises on the water. “We place an emphasis on safety,” says Simon. “We’re trying to get people aware of their surroundings. You don’t have to go far offshore to get a totally new perspective of Raglan.”

For the first half of the season the Club meets at the Kopua Domain and for the second half they sail from Lorenzen Bay. The group place a small sailing boat out on the main road on Club days to serve as a reminder. And you don’t even need your own boat to get involved. The Club owns an assortment of different sailing vessels – from T-Classes to a 16ft Hobie Cat. Like to learn to sail? The Club welcomes new members.

For more information call Chris on 825 0310.

Blacksand Café’s latest art exhibition fittingly incorporates one of its staple wares - coffee. Coffee Canvas He Mauri is by local contemporary visual artist Simon Te Wheoro and was officially opened last Thursday.

Simon’s choice to use coffee in several of the exhibition’s pieces was a way to support Trade Aid and Fairtrade. He’s broken the drink down into washes. “I kept layering the canvas, pouring it on, splashing it on,” he says. “Different coffees give different tones.” He admits the downsides of using the beverage were the smell and the addiction factor. “My studio was reeking,” he says. And I’m now a coffee lover.”

Another theme that runs through this exhibition is the idea of a life force. “One influence was my partner being pregnant – the idea of “eternal energy,” he says. Several of the pieces incorporate copper which he says is beautiful to work with. “I love texture. I find that if people want to touch it then you know you’ve got them.”

Simon works with a number of different media and he has three studios in Raglan - one for painting, one for sculpture and one for Ta Moko (tattoo). Having spent the last few years establishing himself as a Ta Moko artist he hasn’t found time for a solo exhibition. But with a few national exhibitions lined up for next year he felt he was ready to show the local community what he’s been up to.Emma Brooks

Kiwi songstress Anika Moa returns to Raglan on Saturday 6 November, as part of a 21 date national tour.

Performing songs from her new album “Love In Motion” and of course her extensive back catalogue, Anika’s love for touring Aotearoa and meeting people, not to mention sampling local wine and cuisine is infectious. She is sure to charm audiences far and wide with her heartfelt songs, razor sharp wit and a passion for performing live.

Anika was recently nominated as a finalist in this year’s New Zealand Music Awards for Best Female Solo Artist, Album Of The Year and Best Pop Album. Her fourth album “Love In Motion’ was released locally in April of this year and sees an Australian release in September through EMI. In addition Anika’s track Running Through The Fire has been nominated as a finalist in the 2010 Apra Silver Scrolls – her second Silver Scroll nomination

Anika kicks off this tour in Auckland at the Mangere Art’s Centre Ngā Tohu o Uenuku on 21October. The 21 date tour will take her to all

corners of New Zealand before she plays her final date in Wellington at the Ruby Lounge on Saturday 4th December. West Coast singer songwriter Mel Parsons will join Anika for all dates on the tour. Her album “Over My Shoulder” was released last year through Border Music.

So watch out for a Mazda with guitars hanging out the windows and souvenir flags waving on the aerial - proof that Anika has arrived in town.

Under a beautiful sunny Labour weekend sky, the Raglan Golf Club hosted the second annual Wairau Farm Open.

Seventy two golfers from all over the upper North Island competed for a range of prizes put up by Rob and Sandy Mitchell and with the kind support of Century 21.

On a day of excellent scoring it was local father and daughter duo of Ken and Melissa Shea who topped the tables with the best gross score in the men’s ‘Division One’ and ladies sections. Ken, for some years the undisputed king of Raglan Golf, shot a 69 whilst his daughter, the club’s best lady golfer, managed an 85. The Division Two best gross score went to R. Anderson who shot an excellent 76.

The best Net Score competition with the golfers handicaps taken into account went to Chris Parker in the men’s ‘Division One’ with a par busting 63, men’s ‘Division Two’ went to Jon Webb with a personal best 62 and the most popular winner of the day Phyllis Buchanan took the ‘Ladies Division’ with a 66.

The Stableford competition saw Mike Dixon take the men’s ‘Division One’ with 41 points, Willie Barlow take ‘Division Two’ with 43 points and Kathy Ashby take the ‘Ladies’ division with 40 points.

The wonderful day’s golf was topped off with a meal and much merriment as all the golfers agreed both the weather and the course had lived up to all expectations.

There was another cause for celebration for Club Champion Ken Shea as he defended his title on Sunday taking the match play final by six and five from Danny Te Moananui

The next big competition at the club will be the Christmas Tournament on Sunday 5th December and Raglanites and visitors alike are reminded that the club is open to all golfers with green fees at only $20 for a whole day’s golf. There are still memberships available to suit all pockets and a Summer twilight competition on a Friday evening is now under way for everyone to enjoy. Stuart Doran
