OF MALMÖMAPPING SUSTAINABILITY IN THE MALMÖ DNA
With 100 new inhabitants imigrating every week, Malmö is growing - fast. Several issues concerning the expand-ing has been discussed during the past weeks: the ris-ing sealevel threatening the new settlement on Western Harbour, desifi cation of existing structures within the city and the urban sprawl “eating” it’s way into the valuable farmland.

Looking into densyfying along an already established connection, the cyclepath between Malmö and Oxie, in order to limit the uncontrolled sprawl. The area is about to be taken over by area intensive businesses such as transport companies and cardistributors.
The ringroad also has an impact on the area. Cutting through the landscape, with only one possible cross-ingpoint for walkers and bicycles, it clearly states that this is not a place meant for people to stay. The jour-

ney along the cycle path is primarily a distance to be travelled, a monotone journey with few impressions or stimulating experiences. To avoid the area to becom a monoculture of asfalt and business, it needs to be claimed. Claimed in the sens of inhabiting, making a mark, testing out it’s posibili-ties, limits and boundaries. In order to make this area accessible to be “claimed” by the Malmö population, it must be made habitable for people, both travelling and staying.
Flash mobs are in their very essence rhizom-atic. A leaderless mass event, dissolving as quickly as it appeared. Acts may not be polit-ically or idealogically founded - often just for fun - but they still represent a need to make an expression in public space.

DENSIFICATION ZONESToday, only 30-40% of the plots are uti-lized for buildings, althought they mo-nopolize a lot of land, and to great ex-tent decide the use of the whole area. The density is low, on average one-storey in-dustrial buildings. Open areas are mostly used for parking.

DENSIFICATION ZONES
CONCEPT SCETCHstengthen the edges
Edges are established in order to high-light the inherent, but challenged natural qualities at the site. Increasing the pres-ence of nature by densifi cation of typolo-gies. The work on establishing, or fi nding, these edges lead to the development of a zoning map deciding where, and how to densify.
TYPOLOGYThe area is characterized by enclaves, or islands, of uniform programs. Together with the outer ringroad, Fosie industriby acts as a boundary between the city and the surrounding agricultural area.
SCENARIOMalmö is growing. With an estimated need of 100 000 new dwellings, fi lling in the narrow streach between Fosie and suburb Oxie is a possibility. When facing the future, could the area be looked upon avsa frontier - a meet-ing place or point of contact - a common ground, rather than the limiting and ex-cluding boundary it appears to be?
INVERTED MAPApply a new layer connecting the green structures. The red sites are points of interest; diverging programs that could work together with, or benefi t from, a new public layer of semi-natural character.

In the zonemap, different zones are dis-tributed according to their relation to the connectiong green area, and each other.A combination of densifying by building and densifying by planting, will establish edges along the open area. Enhancing the presence of open fi elds of productive and recovering land in the middle of the industrial area.
NEW CONNECTIONA forest is established on the rim of the zones, densifying by planting. The forest is spreading in between the buildings., and a trail through is established to make it accessable for all, creating a crosscon-nection between the existing bike paths running through the area.
Streaching all the way through the area, you could actually take a 3,5 km walk in the forest. A shorter more effi cient path is also established, running inbetween the zones and open fi elds. The path is al-ligned with alleys of birch trees.
