•Ragtime is a musical genre composed for the piano, generally in duple meter and containing a highly syncopated rhythm.•Its composition usually consists of three or four contrasting sections and each one has 16 or 32 measures in length.
WHAT IS RAGTIME?
DUPLE METER•It is a musical meter characterized by a primary division of 2 beats to the bar, usually indicated by 2 and multiples (simple) or 6 and multiples (compound) in the upper figure of the time signature, with 2/2 (cut time), 2/4, and 6/8 (at a fast tempo) being the most common examples.

THE POPULARITY OF RAGTIME•Ragtime has been a strong
presence in music, entertainment, and scholarship for over a century.•Ernest Hogan was an innovator and key pioneer who helped develop the musical genre, and is credited with coining the term ragtime.
ERNEST HOGAN•Ernest Hogan is the first African-American entertainer to produce and star in a Broadway show (“The Oyster Man” in 1907) and helped create the music genre of ragtime.
THE POPULARITY OF RAGTIME•This has been enjoyed during its
popularity peak between 1897 and 1918.•Its popularity quickly spread in Europe and there, as in America, soon became a fad.•Ragtime fell out of favor as jazz claimed the public’s imagination after 1917.

African-American composer and pianist.•Joplin achieved fame for his ragtime compositions, and was later titled The King of Ragtime.

MAPLE LEAF RAG•One of his most famous rag is the “Maple Leaf Rag” published in 1899.•For at least 12 years after its publication, the "Maple Leaf Rag" heavily influenced subsequent ragtime composers with its melody lines, harmonic progressions or metric patterns.
MAPLE LEAF RAG•This composition became the model for ragtime compositions.• The piece gave Joplin a steady if unspectacular income for the rest of his life.
