Dining Room
Design and full gut renovation of a residential apartment in Battery Park City, New York. It included the redesign of circulation, space planning and design of highly customized furniture storage units in living media and dining area, bedroom, bath and kitchen. The new design increased storage from 100+ cubic feet to 1,300 cubic feet. Custom furniture design consisted of a chair, sofa and cocktail table. Additional work included restoration of family antiques, highly finished walls and fabrics, floor finishes in marble, carpet and a custom designed, hand made area rug.

From New York Living:
“...Alston customized the loft by opening circulation paths to enable people to flow easily through their daily routine, as well as mapping out traffic flow when entertaining. Each area was customized: closets were de-signed with cherry wood lined in cedar, and in addition to standard hanging spaces ev-ery need was designed for, from tie hangers to make-up brush drawers. Color harmonies and materials were adjusted according to size, space, natural and man-made lighting. The result is nothing less than a work of art.”

UAP Black and White Oil Painting Copper Plate Installation
RAI’s work is inspired by Rebecca Alston’s vision of design as an art form. This loft renovation consisted of custom designs derived from Alston’s artwork. Alston used shapes from the ‘Urban Art Series’ paint-ing to create the copper mural at left that consisted of three large printmaking plates (7’ x 5’). These plates were burned in acid baths, followed by inking the plates and later applying a protective coat. The plates were then suspended from the brushed steel panel with materi-als used in aircraft to prevent the metals from reacting to each other.

Completed Breslin Lobby
This renovation restores some of the grand splendor that existed at the turn of the cen-tury when the building had been a hotel. Build in the mid-1800’s and last remodeled shortly after World War II, the building, now an apartment complex, was also brought into compliance with safety codes as part of the renovation.
A maze of rooms was demolished to create an open lobby, adjoining service offices and a retail shop. Original design details that had been despoiled in previous restructurings were recreated or restored.

A common thread woven throughout Rebecca Alston’s integrated design and art background has been the use of color and the understanding of technical as well as aesthetic elements, which form the environmental prod-ucts she creates.

Alston created color palettes for the Nike Headquarters in New York City, developed from her color and sound perceptual studies “Parative Ambiance”, which she conducted over a 5-year period. Parative Ambiance was a body of art that made use of color palettes and 2 & 3 dimensional forms to test the perceptual interrelationship of color/form and sound. Sometimes Alston refers to this as sensory balancing. The pattern and color system from Alston’s completed color palettes were used for the design generation of Nike’s NYC head-quarters.

!"#$#"%&'()#*&+,--'*%./&01#$#&Steel: The intense purple of the painted floating wedge serves as an abstract icon for the park.
Resin: an inclined, golden plan creates a seating area that hov-ers over the landscape.
Aluminum: The perime-ter of the park by a red anodized aluminum seating element.
Water: Flowing over polished blue stone, water joins the various levels within the park from source to pool
Sand: at the center lies a plane of raked sand; a contemplative coun-terpoint to the wedge of steel.
Flowers: the aroma and color of thousands of petals suspended in beds above the water animate the park.
Stone: abstract, black stone bridges sere as links between the vari-ous levels
Within the dense fabric of this urban environment, we are proposing a new kind of Urban Park. The concept was to tie each color to a cultural reference of Japan. The colors used referenced the Chakra colors and energy fields.
A vibrancy of color and dynamism of form characterizes this landscape. A range of au-tonomous materials take shape and create a three dimensional composition based on the painting ‘Purple Wedge’. The contrast between finished modern materials (steel, resin, anod-ized aluminum) to unfinished natural materials (sand, flowers, water) create a space with a unique and vibrant atmosphere. The park would create a new symbol for the community while providing a usable public space that includes many amenities. The water falling from pool to pool, the scent from the flowers, the analogous landscape within the sand of the garden and the floating planes of the sedges, bridges, and seating combine to form this New Urban Landscape.

Rebecca Alston’s entry, the sole winner from the United States out of 233 entries from 40 countries, was granted the Bronze Award by the Japanese Government for Excellence in Design.
Critic Peter Frank has termed Alston’s approach to environmental aesthetics, specifically the impact that light, hue and form have on an individual, as an “Aesthetic Ecology”.
