VEHICLE FILTRATION EQUIPMENT-CREATING RELIABLE AND SAFEAIR SYSTEMS

Global rail vehicle owners and operators demandcontinuous improvement in the reliability andsafety throughout the operational life of theirtrains. Critical to performance are vehicle airsystems that can be affected by poor quality air.

Norgren has developed dedicated filtrationsolutions to meet and exceed customers varyingexpectations and requirements for reliability andsafety.

    Critical vehicle air systems

Control valves employed in brakes and doorsystems, couplers, suspension or auxiliarysystems are susceptible to poor air quality, withcontamination by oil, water or particulate. Thismay lead to improper actuation or even failure tooperate. Their incorrect actuation may result inbrakes not being fully or correctly applied whilstthe vehicle is in motion. It may also lead toincorrect coupling, an uncomfortable journey forpassengers and complete vehicle failure.

Any of these undesirable actions can have greatfinancial implications for operators, dissatisfaction for customers and major safetyconcerns for both.

Air filtration equipmentNorgren is one of the largest suppliers of railvehicle filtration equipment in the world. Thishelps to overcome the demanding requirementsof continued safety and operating reliability.Critical systems where control valves areemployed can have filtration systems configuredto meet the increasing operational problemsexperienced with the air supply as vehicles age.Where more extreme conditions exist, standardequipment can be customised by design

modifications to exactly match the given flow, pressure and temperature demands. In this way, filtration systems can be provided that are not onlyfit for function but reliable, robust and designedwith minimum pressure drop thus achievingenergy efficiency as well as optimised runningcosts and compressor loading.

Dedicated filtration solutionsNorgren can draw upon its experience in diverseindustries to produce air filtration systems. Aircan be conditioned to meet each applicationsrequirement across all of the different elements ofa complete system. Norgren air filtration systemsdeliver air quality thus allowing equipment incritical areas of rail vehicles to operate reliablythroughout their working lives. Manufacturingmany on board ancillary systems andcomponents gives Norgren an unrivalledunderstanding of their needs and limitations

regarding air quality. Norgren has the ability tomatch the filtration system with the needs of thevalves and cylinders. If parts of the system proveparticularly difficult to protect with correctfiltration, the wide Norgren range of valves andcylinders can often be relied upon to overcomethese difficulties.

Engineering solutionsNorgrens engineers develop complete productpackages including modular 3stage 68 seriesfilter assemblies with special membrane dryers, heavy duty check valves, brass Ystrainers,Buschjost diaphragm and Webber solenoid valvesand drains to meet special voltage requirements.Norgren continues to exceed expectations byoffering fully customised solutions.

    CREATING UNRIVALLED ADDED VALUE

    FOR OUR FREIGHT CUSTOMERS

    08 RAILADVANTAGE

Moving goods by rail has become more profitablethanks to technological advances, marketrestructuring and more competitive regulatoryframeworks.

Norgrens engineers have extensive experience increating products and services for freightcustomers that are unrivalled in reliability, safetyand lifecycle competitiveness.

Iron ore wagon door operation systemsThe requirements of iron ore freight wagonbuilders demand door operation systems thatare tough and long lasting. A maximum productdischarge from the wagons as quickly as possiblecombined with minimal product hangup iscritical. Faced with these challenges, Norgrensdesign team engineer solutions which includespecially fabricated steel rear mounting on a 980cylinder and a special valve system allowing door

operation from either side of the wagon usingjust one spring return valve. Solutions provided byNorgren exceed expectations by enabling a 99.9%product discharge from the wagon in less than sixseconds.

State of the art grain wagonsNorgren supports the development of innovativegrain wagons through close partnership and fullunderstanding of the demanding applications.Having been awarded sole pneumatic supplierstatus with several customers clearlydemonstrates Norgrens determination toengineer a real competitive advantage for ourcustomers. This provides real cost savings onmaintenance and reliability over the entire life ofthe wagons.

ON TRACK TO SUPPORTOUR PERMANENT WAY CUSTOMERS

A healthy permanent way is the basis of a safe andpredictable rail transportation system. This makesa first class design and the innovative engineeringof long lasting solutions critically important.

Norgrens engineering teams are ready for thischallenge. Norgren provides solutions that arereliable, can resist a harsh environment over timeand improve our customers competitiveness.

Retarder cylindersNorgrens engineers work closely together witha specialist seal manufacturer to develop a sealresistant to any build up of ice on the piston rodas well as protracted acid rain. Retarder cylindersprovided by Norgren prove to be effective anddurable.

Pneumatic points motor controlsNorgren provides innovative pneumatic controlsolutions for track and point systems. Oursolutions exceed expectations by providingcompact designs based on ISO Star valves,Webber valves, pressure switches, associatedisolation valves and Pneufit fittings. Customsolutions, close customer partnerships andNorgren technical engineering excellence deliversworld leading designs.
