The following data has been compiled from many sources including online, user submissions and di-rect inquiry. This information has been edited, corrected and compiled into the reference list that fol-lows.

Where information is available, interior colors are included.

E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. Prefixes and SuffixesDuPont was the preeminent paint and coatings supplier to the railroad industry. We’re slowly build-ing a list of DuPont prefixes and suffixes to help decipher the older product lines. We’ll add more as we learn more. Additions and corrections would be welcome.

The old color codes are still valid and can be used by the PPG Industrial Coatings lab to make cur-rent formulations. Be aware that the sheen would likely be different which may affect the color’s appearance in varying light. They’ll work to get as close of a color match as possible. These differ-ences are due to current VOC requirements and the lack of heavy metal pigments. It’s best to also send a sample if you have one.

Ditzler and PPG Codes:

Pantone is a standard color ink matching system for printing, not for paint color formulation. Ink and paint standards do not cross as they are different systems for different processes. However, if you want your paint to match a specific Pantone color card, send the card to the coatings manu-facturer’s lab to have it scanned and formulated. Where we do have a match to a specific Pantone color, the Pantone color number is provided.

We’ve not yet investigated on whether other manufacturers’ codes are still valid. If you have any information on the validity of other codes, please feel free to contact us and let us know.

Revisions:

DuPont started changing their product line in the ’90s. The higher VOC and heavy metal pigment products were discontinued and were replaced by new formulations with a new coding system that did not correlate to the old system. In 2014 DuPont sold their industrial coatings division to Axalta. Axalta has their own code system. The only way reliable to get a color match to historic Du-Pont colors is to send a color sample to your supplier for scanning.

Current Applicability of Historic DuPont Codes

Munsell is an international color defining standard based on Hue (color), Value (light or dark), and Chroma (intensity). When available, we’ve added Munsell notation. These can be used by your sup-plier to determine the color.
