    THE BEGINNING

First train started in India 1853from Bombay to Thane.

    1853 first railway train

    journeyed distance 22 mile

    Bombay to Thana.

    Originally , operated by

    private English companies

1925-1950 GOI took over theall private railway companies.

    SERVICES PROVIDED BY INDIAN

    RAILWAY

Indian railway operates both long distance and

    suburban rail system.

It owns locomotive coach production facilities

    at several places in India.

Its operations cover twenty eight states and

    three union territories.

It also provides limited international services

    to Nepal ,Bangladesh and Pakistan.

    RAILWAY SIGNALLING

Railway signalling is a system used to control

    railway traffic safely.

CBTC is a railway signalling system that makes use

of the telecommunications between the train and trackequipment.

By means of the CBTC systems, the exact position of

a train is known more accurately than with thetraditional signalling systems.

This results in a more efficient and safe way to

    manage the railway traffic.

    INTERLOCKING

Earlier signalmen were responsible for ensuring anypoints (US: switches) were set correctly beforeallowing a train to proceed.

Mistakes were made which led to accidents.

The process in which Points and signals at junctionsoperate in harmony to ensure that no unsafe movesare set up is known as Interlocking.

The concept of the interlocking of points, signals and

other appliances was introduced to improve safety This prevents a signalman from operating appliances

    in an unsafe sequence.

The station is interlocked by means of RRI and

worked with control Panel located in the RRI cabin.

Station is provided with multiple aspects color

light signals and electric machine operated points.

The entire operation of interlocked points and

signal for reception and departure of trains is done

through Control Panel by signal man on duty. Signal man is responsible for correct & safe

    working of trains.

    MICROWAVE TRANSMISSION

Microwave transmissionrefers to technology oftransmitting informationor energy by the use ofmicrowaves

    Microwaves are widelyused for point-to-pointcommunications

Microwave transmissionis a type of unguidedtransmission

    12/26

    Indian railway has

allocated frequencyband of 7.125 GHz to

    7.425 GHz

    Typical microwave

    communication linkspeeds are 1-10 Mbps

    A disadvantage is that

    microwaves are limited

    to line of sight

    propagation

    OPTICAL FIBER COMMUNICATION

Optical fiber transmission is used mainly in guided

    transmission of a signal

Optical fiber communication is a method of

transmitting information from one place to another bysending pulses of light through an optical fiber

    Wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) is the

practice of multiplying the available capacity of

optical fibers through use of parallel channels, each

channel on a dedicated wavelength of light

    OPTICAL FIBER CABLE

Optical fiber is located atthe center of the cable

    An special silicone coating

    is applied outside the

    cladding to preserve the

    fibers strength

    The protective coating is

surrounded by buffer jacket Finally entire cable

    assembly is contained in an

    outer polyurethane jacket15

    OPTICAL FIBER

An optical fiber is a flexible, transparent fibermade of glass (silica) or plastic

Optical fibers typically include a transparent

    core(8 m)surrounded by a transparentcladding(125 m) material with a lower index

of refraction. Light is kept in the core by total

    internal reflection16

    THE PASSENGER RESERVATION

    SYSTEM

The Passenger Reservation System (PRS) iscomputerized reservation system for any trainfrom anywhere in country

This system has made the train journey quitecomfortable

When PRS system was not developed a stationcould give the reservation to the customer

Those train which get started from their stationbut after PRS get installed the customer can getinformation about any train running in India

    Interactive Voice Response System

The IVRS is the arrangement of a computer and a

    telephone set.

In this system interactive between telephone andcomputer are done and the results are in the form of

    voice.

In railway it is used in online train informationsystem and passenger reservation enquiry system.

    RAILNET

Rail net is nothing but an interconnection and

infrastructure medium of different railway zone and

    division in the Indian railway

The rail net is a railway open system for quick datatransmission and data using resources at different

    places

It is purely under railway and information and data

are collected at the headquarter through different

    divisions and unit

    ROUTERS

    Routers are small physical

    devices that join multiple

    networks together.

They use protocols such as ICMPto communicate with each other

    Technically, a router is a Layer 3

    gateway device.

Meaning that it connects two or

    more networks.

    CONCLUSION

I have learned about process of railway

    signaling and controlling railway network

I have also learned about process like

    interlocking and systems like PRS

I have also observed the atmosphere in which

    engineers of Indian railway works

Overall it was a great experience during the

    training period
