Figure 3Plan and Outline Contours You can outline the puppy with a grid or freehand:

• To outline with a grid, begin at Step 1.• To outline freehand, begin at Step 3.

1. Use an HB pencil to lightly draw a gridded drawing space (Figure 3).

The drawing space is 4 by 5 in (10.2 by 12.7 cm), and the grid is four squares across by five squares down.

You can create a larger drawing by using a larger gridded drawing space.

2. Add numbers along the top and letters down one side.

Burnishing: The application of one or more layers of a dry medium (such as graphite) over shading to lighten, darken, or remove imperfections.

Cast shadow: A dark section on an object or a surface adjacent to a subject that receives little or no direct light. The values of a cast shadow are darkest next to the object and become gradually lighter as they move farther away.

Hatching: A series of lines (called a set) drawn closely together to give the illusion of values. Depending on the shading effects desired, the individual lines in hatching sets can be far apart or close together.

Light source: The direction from which a dominant light originates. A light source identifies the light and shadow areas of a drawing subject, allowing artists to know where to add light or dark lines and values in their artworks.

Texture: The surface details of an object that can be identified by sight, touch, and/or a general knowledge of the subject.

As an Aside

A lightly textured, acid-free mat board was chosen for this drawing. The shading was created with variations of primary and secondary colors. The fur is blue, the insides of the ears and the pads of the paws are yellow, and the nose is red/pink. Stripes of primary and secondary colors are used for the rainbow ribbon/bow.

As an Aside

You have artistic license to use your creativity and make any changes you wish, including the colors of his fur, eyes, and/or nose. Drawing the rose is also optional. You can leave it out, change the color, or replace it with something else such as a nametag or dog biscuit.

3. Lightly outline the puppy with an HB pencil (Figures 4 to 6).

Remember: don’t press too hard with your pencil or the lines won’t completely erase.

Refer to the close-up views to better see his eyes (Figure 5) and the bow and rose (Figure 6).

4. Erase the grid lines and redraw any sections that were accidentally erased (Figure 7).

Use the edge of a vinyl eraser to erase the lines, a clean soft paintbrush to brush away the eraser crumbs, and a kneaded eraser to pick up any remaining eraser crumbs.

5. Use your kneaded eraser to lighten the pencil lines until you can barely see them.

Figure 7

Note that the lengths of the hatching lines vary slightly. Use a sandpaper block or fine sandpaper to keep your pencil points sharp.

The light source originates from the frontal left so the shading is lighter on the left. Darker shading is in the areas farther away from the light source.

Dark shading in the shadow areas (such as under the ears and in the creases of the stitching) creates the illusion of depth. Don’t miss the dark shadows on his belly and neck; under his brows and bow; and on the right side of his nose.

Tip!

If your goal is to create realistic-looking fur, make sure each hatching line is drawn in the direction in which the fur appears to “grow”. Also remember to keep your pencil points sharpened.

Figure 10 is shown slightly darker than the original drawing so you can better see the curved hatching lines.

7. Use hatching lines to shade the medium values of the fur (Figures 11 and 12).

Test sapphire blue (9) and medium blue (8) on scrap paper to determine which is lighter and which is darker.

As an Aside

Did you notice that this toy dog only has three paws (Figure 12)? I forgot to draw his right back paw, so I had to add it later.

Hatch Furry Forms6. Use color 10 and short, slightly curved hatching

lines to define the forms under the puppy’s fur (Figures 8 to 10).

• Use the darker blue to graduate values from the dark blue toward the light sections.

• Use the lighter blue to graduate values from the medium blue toward the sections of fur that are closer to the light source.

8. Add light values to the sections directly exposed to the light (Figures 13 to 15).

Use light sky blue (7) to graduate medium values towards the lightest sections.

9. Hatch the yellow fur on his paws and the insides of his ears (Figures 16 to 19).

The yellow fur is lighter on the left side of the drawing and is very dark in the shadow areas such as his back Figure 17

Step 3: Shade the lighter middle values with 2 (light orange).

Step 4: Use lots of 3 (yellow) to shade the light values. In the lightest areas, leave some sections of your paper showing between the hatching lines.

Step 5: Gently burnish the middle and dark values with 3 (yellow).

Step 6: Use 13 (white) to add a few highlights to the lightest values.

Shade a Nose and Eyes10. Add shading to the nose (Figures 20 to 22).

Use white to fill in the two circular highlights on the top of the nose and the two small oval highlights on the lower sections of the nose.

paw and under the flap of his right ear.

Step 1: Shade the darkest yellow sections with 16 (dark brown) and 17 (medium brown). Use very few dark shading lines; the fur needs to look yellow rather than brown!

Step 2: Shade the darker middle values with 4 (dark ochre) and 18 (rust).

Tip!

Burnishing the shading helps create the shiny textures of the nose and eyes.

Note the reflected light sections on the left and bottom sections of the nose and remember to leave them very light.

11. Add shading to the dark section of fur (the cast shadow of the nose) on the lower right.

Tip!

Use the following colors (Figure 20) for the various parts of his nose:• 12: the darkest values on the inside of the nostrils, and

for the darkest shadow section of the fur on the lower right.

• 15: the outline of the left perimeter of the nose and the shading of the shadow sections on the right.

• 23: the dark values.• 21: the medium values. • 19: the light values.

Figure 22

12. Use the colors in Figure 22 to burnish the entire nose except for the highlights.

Use 13 to burnish the light values, 19 to burnish the middle values, and 23 for the darker sections.

Tip!

Use the following colors to shade the eyes (Figure 23):• Irises: 5 (dark green),

3 (yellow), 16 (dark brown), and 18 (rust).

• Pupils: 12 (black). • Lower eyelid: 14 (light

gray) and 15 (dark gray).

• Highlights: 13 (white).

Figure 23

13. Use the following nine-step process to shade the eyes (Figures 23 to 25).

Step 1: Fill in the two large and two small highlights with 13 (white). The larger highlights are a little below the tops of the irises because the upper sections are in the shadows of the brows.

Step 2: Use 16 (dark brown) and 12 (black) to outline the circular perimeter of the irises.

and 5 (dark green) for the sections on the right.

Step 5: Use 3 (yellow) to burnish these two colors so the iris seems shiny.

Step 6: Outline the lower edge of the rim of each eye with your 12 (black).

Step 7: Use 15 (dark gray) to shade the rim of the eye.

Step 8: Burnish the center of the rim with 14 (light gray) to make it look shiny.

Step 9: Shade in the pupil with 12 (black).

Create a Rainbow BowGraduations are the most important element of realistic shading.

Some individual stripes of the ribbon have more than one value of a specific color, requiring a graduation from one value to the next. The goal is to keep the transition between the different values flowing smoothly into one another.

14. Very lightly draw lines on the ribbon to identify the location of each stripe (Figures 26 to 28).

Step 3: Shade in the upper section of the iris with 16 (dark brown).

Step 4: Add shading to the lower sections of the irises with 18 (rust) for the sections on the left,

Figure 24

As an Aside

Examine Figure 24 and note the following:• The iris is darker at the top and on the

side where the large highlight is located.• The lower eyelid is dark gray. • A large highlight is on the upper left and a

small one is on the lower right. • The lightest value of the iris is around the

smaller highlight (on the lower right).

Tip!

As the puppy’s ribbon curves in different directions, certain sections are closer to the viewer than others. Foreshortening (a component of perspective) creates the illusion that some stripes are wide and others are narrow.

Tip!

You may need to apply a lot of pressure with your pencil to make the dark values. If the light colors are not quite light enough, you can burnish them with white.

Note that there are very few light values used for the sections of the ribbon on the right (further from the light source) and under his chin.

Tip!Three colors are used for each stripe in the ribbon. The first number in each color (Figure 26) is the lightest value; the second is the medium value; and the third is the darkest value in each row.• Purple: 20, 22, 11• Blue: 7, 8, 10• Green: 6, 5, 12• Yellow: 3, 4, 16• Orange: 2, 1, 16• Red: 24, 23, 16

15. Add shading to each stripe in the ribbon.

Each color in the bow is lighter on the left side of the drawing (closer to the light source).

Figure 26

Figure 27

Figure 28

16. Add shading to the rose if you have included it in your drawing (Figure 28).

You can use any three colors you prefer as long as they represent three different values (refer back to Figure 26).

Page 10: Rainbow Robby Blue - Amazon S3 · • Shade a Nose and Eyes • Create a Rainbow Bow • Add Finishing Touches Rainbow Robby Blue Draw an adorable plush toy puppy by shading the

Challenge!

Use your imagination, the basic process outlined in this lesson, and the same palette of colors to draw another plush animal.

With a tiny section of a fourth paw showing under his belly, he seems to be sitting more firmly on the ground.

18. Add shading to the cast shadow using lots of different colors (Figure 30).

First, lightly draw a few parallel horizontal lines as guides. The shading of the cast shadow is darker closer to him and becomes gradually lighter as it extends outward.

Cast shadows give the illusion of weight by creating the illusion that the subject of your drawing is sitting on a surface.

19. Check over your drawing, from the top of his fluffy blue head down to the yellow bottoms of his paws.

Touch up any areas you’re not completely happy with. If you want, you can outline various sections of your drawing with freshly-sharpened, dark colored pencils.

Sign and date your drawing!
