Adult ProgramsThe overarching objective o the Rainbow Village program is to acilitate a change in behavior in the amilies

that seek our assistance. A undamental component o achieving this goal is to help the adult heads o house-

hold identiy the learned behaviors that contributed to their homelessness, while providing the environment,

opportunities and resources that will allow them to replace those limiting behaviors with more adaptive ones.

Adults in residence at Rainbow Village attended more than 80 lie-skills cla sses this year. The Adult Lie-Skills

classes ell into six general categories.

    Personal Development

    Financial Management

    Parenting & Family Issues

    Home Management

    Career Development

    Fiscal Responsibility

Having successully completed these classes, as well as weekly group counseling sessions, our residents were

ar better equipped to successully break the cycles o homelessness, poverty and domestic violence in their

lives and begin anew. We encourage graduates to come back at any time to reinorce their learning and oer

support to current residents that are trying to put these new skills into practice.

    Heathers Story

I wanted to give up but Rainbow Village wouldnt let me.

I was so lost. They loved me through the worst time in

my lie. There was always someone there. They helpedme realize that I control my own destiny.

Heather was a criminal justice student with a

bright uture ahead o her. She was happily

married and learned, at age 23, that she was

pregnant with her rst child. Motherhood put her

education on the back burner. She had to go to

work to help support their growing amily.

The years passed quickly and beore she knew itshe had our wonderul children; but lie threw

her some big curves along the way. She and her

rst husband divorced and Heather ound hersel

saddled with big student loans to repay and no

degree to enable her to get a job that would

support the needs o her amily. She remarried

but her second marriage ended with a restraining order and a desperate fight to

the protective walls o the Partnership Against Domestic Violence. Heather was

doing everything she could to hang on and keep her amily together. It was then

    she ound Rainbow Village.

Heathers plan was to be back on her eet in about six months but then her

world began to unravel. Her second husband led legal charges against her and

launched an aggressive custody battle. As she

ought or her amily, Rainbow Villages network o

support kicked into high gear. We helped her get

legal representation and the counseling support

that she needed. She lost her kids or a short time

but Rainbow Village stood by her and helped her

ght. In the end she was able to bring t wo o herour kids back home. Her oldest daughter now

lives in Canada. She continues to ght to regain

custody o her 7-year-old son but cherishes the

    never-ending words o encouragement and

support she received rom the Rainbow Village

    community along the way.

In 2010 Heather stepped out on her own a gain

and remains very active in our graduate program.

On her rerigerator is posted her personal mission

statement that she wrote on January 19, 2010 dur-

ing one o our Lie Skills classes. It reads, To realize

I control my own destiny by my words, attitude

and actions. Heather shares, I used to be ull o

ear and worry. I no longer worry about what I

cant control. I take no day or granted. This is just

something I had to go through. It was not because

o anything I did; it was done to me.

As we strive to break the cycles o homelessness, poverty and domestic violence

or generations to come, our greatest opportunity is with the children. Ideally

children are taught good habits, values, and critical li e skills by their parents, but

oten the lie circumstances o our amilies have made that challenging. Most o

the children we serve have not been able to experience those things every child

should be able to take or granted. Many are hungry or a sense o saety and

security, encouragement, guidance and people to trust.

    Our 2010 Children and Youth

    Enrichment programs oered

    a wonderul opportunity or

    Rainbow Village children to

    heal, learn, and better them-

selves through many excitingprograms designed just or

    them. We modeled or them

    good behavior, set new expec-

    tations o them, and guided

them to make good choices so

they can be an integral part o

    breaking the destructive cycles

    in their amilies.

Ater SchoolEvery day ater school Rainbow Village children ound tremendous love and

support at our Ater School Program. We oered healthy snacks, playground

time, and un creative projects. Then we got down to business with homework

support and tutoring to help them reach their ull potential academically. Ater

School time was ull o lots o praise and encouragement, as well as a great time

    with riends.

    Children & Youth Programs

Big RecessMany o the children at Rainbow Village

have seen and experienced things that

most o us could never imagine. Big Recesswas held one night each week and was

specically designed to give them time to

blow o steam and just be kids.

Its all about play and adventure at Big

Recess. Volunteers o all ages added to the excitement with special holiday and

    birthday celebrations.

Character Building ClassesOne evening each week Rainbow Village children partici-

pated in an educational program that ocused specically

on values, virtues, good decision-making, positive attitudes,

giving back and more. We laid the groundwork or them

to take away a strong value system, high standards o

behavior, and sound principles theyll carry with them

    or a lietime.

Direct results we saw rom our work with our children and youth this

    year include:

Improved study skills and standardized test results

Improved reading, comprehension, and math skills

Improved school attendance and academic success

Increased high school and post-secondary graduation rates

Increased awareness of their responsibilities in the family

    Improved behavior and social skills

    Enhanced value systems

    Restoration of trust and hope

Thanks to the aithul members o the Duluth Rotary Club all school-

aged children at Rainbow Village enjoyed the simple pleasures o just

being a kid during the 2010 summer break.

The Duluth Rotary Club hosted several undraising events throughout the year to

und scholarships or Rainbow Village kids to attend the Gwinnett County Parks &

Recreation Day Camp. Duluth Rotary Club members kicked their summer adventures

o right by hosting a Family Picnic or all o our residents to enjoy in early June.

It proved to be a summer ull o un in the sun that they will a ll remember or a lie-

time. We are so proud to report that one o our teens received the camp award or

the Most Improved Counselor in Training! The support o our local Rotarians means

so much. This opportunity would not have been possible or our kids without their

    generous support.

The Hudgens Family Foundation has been supporting Rainbow Village to lay a solid oundation to

    stand on or many years.

In 1997 we had the privilege to sit down with Scott Hudgens himsel to explain the needs o homeless amilies and paint

the long-range vision or Rainbow Village. He challenged us to think big when he and his wie Jacqueline awarded us a

generous $500,000 donation which enabled us to buy our apartment complex in Duluth. Soon thereater his oundation

granted us an additional $500,000 to buy the adjacent property which prepared the way or us to dream even bigger. In

2010 the Hudgens Family Foundation enthusiastically endorsed and embraced our vision o expansion once again with

a lead git o $1,000,000 to our Building Strong CommunitiesCapital Campaign that will enable us to build an all-inclusive

village and triple our capacity. The Hudgens Family Foundation caught our vision rom day one and continues to be a vital

partner that is helping to prepare the way or us to expand our services so we can have an even greater impact on the

    lives o those we touch.

    Laying a Foundation of Support:

As we strive to teach our residents about sound budgeting, strong work

ethic, making wise investments, dreaming big, the value o amily and

community, and having aith in God to see them through, Clyde and

    Sandra are leading by example.

Their leadership and involvement at Rainbow Village is grounded in a message

o aith, hope and love and they are clearly living out the great commission to

Love One Another. Clyde and Sandra have a heart to reach out to the lost a nd

help them nd new hope and promise. They have been two o the biggest

champions or our amilies this past year. Theirs was the rst git on the table

when we unveiled the vision or our new village. They clearly wanted to send the

message with their $1,000,000 dollar lead git that the lives o those we serve are

precious and worthy o investing in.

    Leading by Example:

Angel investors provide vital operational support to Rainbow Village through

ongoing monthly contributions. These gits provide a steady, dependable source

o income that allows us to stay ocused on our mission and long-term goals.

In 2010 we were blessed to grow our Angel investor base by more than 40 Angels. Dr. Tony and Lori Landis are some

o the angels among us that recognize how much monthly Angel donations help Rainbow Village keep costs down,

stay scally sound, operate more eciently, and strategically ocus our resources to provide the greatest impact. Tony

and Lori support Rainbow Village nancially because they strongly believe in and support our mission. They understand that as a non-prot

we have day-to-day cash fow needs that are equally as important to meet as long-term capital needs. We continue to work hard to show them a great return on their

investment in Rainbow Village on al l ronts.

Our relationship with Siemens began several years back when

Cathe Reams, Director o Marketing or Siemens, selected Rainbow

Village to be the beneactor o their Siemens All Hands Daycorporate service project.

Several hundred Siemens volunteers worked or ten hours to make our communities

even more beautiul. Cathe then submitted their volunteer eort to Siemens

Foundation or a Community Excellence Award or recognition o their local community

outreach eorts. As a result, Rainbow Village received our rst grant rom Siemens

Caring Hands. Since then more than $10,000 in grant monies have ollowed and the

relationship with Siemens volunteers continues to grow. Siemens employees were spotted

throughout this past year cleaning, painting and doing other x-it-up projects at our properties.

They are also always one o the rst to sign up to adopt our amilies or the holidays. They certainly went above and beyond when they purchased, assembled and gited 21 bicycles so that each and every Rainbow Village child would have a new bicycle or Christmas. It was an amazing eat and it proved

to be one o the best Christmas Days ever or Rainbow Village children. Siemens continues to amaze us with their phila nthropic spirit. They are phenomenal

corporate citizens serving as true role models or other companies to ollow.

    Louise Stanton Education Fund

In 2010 Russell Stanton decided he wanted to make a memorial git in honor o his mother that would havea lasting impact at Rainbow Village.

Louise Stanton did not graduate rom high school and she oten claimed it was the greatest regret o her lie. Knowing this,

it only seemed tting that Russell establish a scholarship und in his mothers name that would enable Rainbow Village

residents to have greater access to higher education. The und is used to help our residents obtain their GEDs, get the

tutoring support they need, purchase books and suppl ies or school, cover testing and application costs, supplement tuition,

attend certication courses, and more. Thanks to the Louise Stanton Education Fund our residents have greater opportunities

than ever beore to meet their educational goals that will allow them to better prepare the way or their utures.

    Our In-Kind Champion

Champion Sel Storage on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Norcross generously donated a climate- controlled storage unit to Rainbow

Village this year to enable us to have a sae, secure place to store our educational resources, arts and crats materials, welcome home boxsupplies, toiletries, small appliances, linens, housewares and more.

Their in-kind donation allowed us to return more than $3,000 back into our operational budget because we did not have to incur annual storage

expense. We are grateul to Chris Ward at Champion Sel Storage or being a such a generous corporate partner that helped us keep our

valuable supplies well protected and in reserve so we are ully prepared to serve uture Rainbow Village amilies.

    2010 Collaborative Partners

There were many other organizations in our community that we strategi-

cally collaborated with to deliver services to our amilies as needed this past

year. We believe strongly in staying ocused on our mission and partnering

with others to enhance our services rather than duplicating services already

available. In doing so, we continue to keep operational costs down while

continuing to expand the support we extend to amilies. Wed like to thankthe ollowing partners or working with us this past year and being an

integral part o helping us prepare the way or our residents success.

The most difcult challenge we aceas an organization is responding

to and meeting the needs o the

    ever-growing number o homeless

    amilies in our community.

The average age o a homeless person is 9

years old. This aects many generations to

come because the traumatization to the

children will have a long-term eect i not

    properly addressed.

Since 2008 we have been preparing the

way to unveil our long-term plan to expand

our village allowing us to triple the num-

ber o amilies we can serve at one time.

Over the next 3-5 years we will build in

three phases a new campus in Duluth that

will house and support 30 amilies. The new

campus will include a much-needed on-siteEducation, Recreation, and Day Care Center,

as well as a Family Service Center and 30

new apartment homes. The new village will

allow us to say yes to many more amilies

in need and have a signicant impact addressing the homelessness issue in North Metro Atlanta.

The groundwork has successully been laid to bring this vision to reality. The plan is designed.

The strategic planning is complete. The easibility study is complete and the campaign leadership

    team is in place.

    Our Vision for the Future

The average age o a homeless person is 9

    years old. This aects many

    generations to come because the

traumatization to the children willhave a long-term eect i not

    properly addressed.

This allows us to bring all current

Rainbow Village amilies onto one new

campus and take advantage o some

economies o scale with all residents in

one location. K nowing that community
