Water overflow in domestic rainwater systemsundertheenvironmentalPlanningandassessmentact1979anditsregulations,allbuildingworkmustbecarriedoutinaccordancewiththebuildingcodeofaustralia(bca).inadditiontoreferringtoaustralianstandardsas/nZs3500.3(2003),andas/nZs3500.5(2000),thebcaalsocontainsrequirementsforthedisposalofsurfacewaterinvolumeone,inPerformancerequirementsfP1.2andfP1.3,andinvolumetwo,inPart3.5.2,namely,PerformancerequirementP2.2.1andclauses3.5.2.1.and3.5.2.4.

themostcommonmeanstosatisfytheserequirementsforroofdrainage(ie.guttering)installationsisviacompliancewiththenationalPlumbinganddrainagecodeas/nZs3500.3-2003.

furthermore,ineachstateandterritoryitisnecessarytosatisfytherelevantregulation.forexample,thensWcodeofPracticeforPlumbinganddrainage(2006)adoptsas/nZs3500.3-2003andassociatedamendments.(furtherinformationisavailableatwww.deus.nsw.gov.au/water/plumbing.asp)

inthedesignanddetailingofaroofdrainagesystemconsiderationmustbegiventoarangeofthefactorssuchasrainfallintensity,roofcatchmentarea,guttersize/capacity,gutterfall,gutteroutlets(sumps,rain-heads,nozzles),downpipesize,quantityandplacement,overflowconsideration,material selection, jointing, etc.

forresidentialroofdrainagesystemshighfrontedguttersareapopularaestheticchoicetohidetheloweredgeoftilesorroofcladding.somesimpleoverflowmethodsthatcanbeemployedonhighfrontedguttersarelistedbelow;

a) methodsrelatedtothedesignandinstallationofroofdrainagesystems;

• slottedfrontofgutter-asimpleandpopularchoicewhichallowsforwateroverflowthroughtheslotsvisibleonthefrontfaceofthegutter.

statutorywarrantiesnormallyapplyandconsumershavearighttolodgeacomplaintandhaveitdealtwithbytheappropriateauthority.innsW,forexample,thestatutorywarrantyis7yearsunderthehomebuildingact.

intheinstallationoftheroofdrainagesystem,particularfocusshouldbegiventothefollowing;

• attentiontotheuseofcompatiblematerialsfordrainagesystemcomponents,leaf-guardtypesystemcomponentsandcompatiblefasteners/sealantstoconnectandsealthecomponents.

• thepositionofthegutterinrelationtothefascia.

• installationofthespecifiedgutteranddownpipes,ensuringthatdownpipesareinstalledinthecorrectlocationsandnumbers.

• gutterfall,ensuringsufficientfallandthatitisinthedirectionofthedownpipes.

• overflowhasbeenconsideredandspecificdetailsareinstalledwhererequired(suchaswhenthegutterfrontishigherthanthetopofthefascia).

duringtheinstallationalldebrisandloosewastematerials(swarf,fasteners,etc)mustbecleanedoffattheendofeachdayandatthecompletionoftheinstallationtopreventblockagesofthedrainagesystemordeteriorationoftheindividualcomponents.anyprotectivefilmsshouldalsoberemovedaspartoftheinstallationprocess.

inthelongerterm,theabilityofaroofdrainagesystemtohandleoverflowwillalsodependontheregularcleaningofthesystem.forexampletheremovalofplantoranimalmatter(leaves,fungalgrowth,dropping,nests,etc.)anddebrisfromgutters,leaf-guardtypesystemsandthegutteroverflowdevicestoensurefreedrainageofwater.

toensurealonglifetheroofdrainagesystemthemaintenancerequirementsoftheroofdrainagesystemshouldbeforwardedtotheoccupier/ownerofthebuildingandshouldbefulfilled.adequatemaintenanceisarequirementofrainwatergoodwarranties.

Guidance in designing a perimeter drainage system for a domestic roofDesign Procedure

1.decideontheaveragerecurrenceinterval(ari).Wheresignificantinconvenienceorinjurytopeople,ordamagetoproperty(includingcontentsofabuilding),isunlikely,aminimumaricanbe20years. iftheseconditionsarelikely,100yearsisrecommended.

2.determinerainfallintensityforthesitefromtable1.moredataisinas/nZs3500.3.2:2003.

3.sketcharoofplanshowingdimensionsinplanview,pitchofroof,layoutofridgesandvalleysandlargeroofpenetrations.

4.calculatethecatchmentareaoftherooffromtheplan.toallowfortheslopeoftheroof,increasetheplanareaby1%foreverydegreeofpitchupto36°.forpitchesover36°refertoas3500.3:2003.

5.gettheeffectivecross-sectionalareaofthegutteryouintendtousefromtable2.

6.usingthecross-sectionalareaofthegutteronthegraphinfigure1,determinethecatchmentareaperdownpipe.

7.calculate(asafirsttest)theminimumnumberofdownpipesrequiredfortheselectedgutterusingtheequation:

roundthenumberofdownpipesuptothenextwholenumber.

8.ontheplan,selectlocationsforthedownpipesandthe highpointsinthegutters.Wherepractical,thecatchments foreachdownpipeshouldbeaboutequalinarea.

Whenselectingthelocationofhighpointsanddownpipes,considerationshouldalsobegiventoproximitytohighconcentrationsofwaterflow(e.g.valleygutters,diversionsaroundlargeroofpenetrations,dormers,etc.)moreguidanceisgiveninas/nZs3500.3:2003andbca.

calculatetheareaofeachcatchmentforeachdownpipe.

9.Withtheareaofyoureavesgutter,checkthatthecatchmentareaforeachdownpipe,calculatedinstep8,isequaltoorlessthanthecatchmentareashownbythegraph.

ifacatchmentareaistoobigthenyoucan:

•increasethenumberandsizeofdownpipes;

•repositionthedownpipesand/orthehighpoints;

•chooseagutterwithbiggereffectivecross-sectionalarea,thenrepeattheabovefromstep6.

11. decideonthedownpipesize.recommendationsin as/nZs3500.3:2003ondownpipesizes.asanapproximateguide,theareaofroundpipesshouldbeequaltotheareaofthegutter,whilsttheareaofsquareorrectangularpipesmaybe20%smaller(table2).

12. considermeasurestocounteroverflowofguttersintothebuilding.considerationofoverflowathighconcentrationsofwaterflowmayneedtobegiven.

METHODUsing the gutter cross sectional area taken from Table 2 (shown across the bottom of the graph) draw a line upwards until it intersects with the Design rainfall intensity (Table 1). Draw a line at 90º to determine the catchment area for each downpipe.

Roof drainage system design

4) rinse the gutter with water to soften and break up the dirt.

5) use a soft bristle brush and sweep the dirt out. rinse again.
