Raising Dragons

Mrs. Williams

Third Grade

Magpie

I’m going to read aloud a fairy tale from Sweden about a boy who always wanted things he did not have.

Salt on a Bird’s Tail: A Swedish Fairy Tale

Comprehension Skill:Drawing Conclusions

Why does Olle want to put salt on magpie’s

tail?

What can you tell

about Olle from what he does to

get the shiny little

knife?

Why does the magpie ask Olle to get her the items that he wants himself?

These are words . . .

We use them for . . .

Vocabulary

we want to know

Reading, writing, listening, & speaking!

appetite: the desire for food; hunger

chores: small jobs usually done on a regular schedule

harvested: picked or gathered

hitched: tied on or fastened by a knot, ring, or hook

plow: to break up and turn over dirt so that seeds can be planted

sown: scattered or planted

tended: look after; took care of

Predict and InferI can predict what happens as the dragon grows up. I can infer from the cover that the dragon is young at the beginning. I think that a dragon would be harder to raise as they get older.

Drawing Conclusions

I can use story details to figure out something the author does not state directly by constructing a graphic organizer of conclusions.
