PRINCIPAL MESSAGE
I am very happy to note that the Department of Civil Engineering
of Rajendra mane Polytechnic (Ambav- Devrukh) is releasing its Newsletter
enumerating the various activities and achievements of their faculty and
students. We can call civil engineer as a creative artist since they builds
beautiful structures, as we dream, using basic materials. We have to analyse
many case studies of structure failures as they remain as a new dimension of
knowledge to learn and to avoid any such failures in the future.

The Civil Engineering Department was established with a
prime objective to proliferate knowledge. We aim to promote Civil
Engineering by providing the much-needed practical exposure to the
students through its regular activities like academic curriculum,
technical seminars, research symposium, talks on ongoing research
practices throughout the globe and many other related topics from
distinguished practitioners.
MR. N. B BHOPALE Collaboration between the department and industry is important for the
advancement of engineering teaching and research. With this aim, to give our students some
practical insight into Civil Engineering, we organize several visits throughout the year to
ongoing construction sites thus giving them a chance to interact with key personnel of the
industry.
Student of Civil Engineering Association, organizes different events to provides a platform to
budding civil engineers to create, innovate and learn various aspects of civil engineering
through competitions, events.

The department of Civil Engineering of Rajendra Mane Polytechnic, Ambav (Devrukh)
was established in the year 2010. The achievements of the students have been prolific in
academic, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. The department is lead by Prof. N. B. Bhopale and has a well-qualified staff consisting of 07
lecturers (50% of faculties are pursuing post graduation in civil engineering) and 03 lab.
Assistants. The faculty members are engaged actively in enhancing industrially beneficial
activities.

The main target of the study is to clarify the process of load distribution and deformation and time dependent change of
strength and serviceability of structures.
CONCRETE TECHNOLOGY The laboratory allows the students test to assess the various fresh and hardened concrete properties that many affect the
performance of concrete member.
GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING
Integral part of soil mechanics and foundation engineering a proper evaluation of soil samples and analysis of test
results.

Use Waste Coconut Shell in Light Weight Concrete”

Introduction Concrete is one of the most widely used
construction materials in the world. However, the production of Portland cement, an essential constituent of concrete, leads to the release of significant amount of
CO2, a greenhouse gas, one ton of Portland cement
clinker production creates one ton of CO2 and other greenhouse gasses (GHGs). Environmental issues will play a leading role in the sustainable development of the cement and concrete industry in this century. Coconut shell (CS) is not commonly used in the construction industry but are often dumped as agricultural wastes. However, with the quest for affordable housing system for both the rural and urban population of developing countries, various proposals
focusing on cutting down conventional building material costs have been put forward. One of the suggestions in the forefront has been the sourcing, development and use of alternative, non-conventional local construction materials including the possibility of using some agricultural wastes and residues as construction materials. Concrete
“Concrete is defined as a uniform mixture of cement, sand, aggregate, and water in prescribed proportion which sets hardens and acquired strength over a period of time.”
The purpose of the aggregate with in this mixture is to provide a rigid skeletal structure and to reduce the space occupied by the cement paste. Both
coarse aggregates (particle sizes of 20 mm to 4 mm) and fine aggregate (particle size less than 4 mm) are required but the proportions of different sizes of coarse aggregate will vary depending on the particular mix required for each individual end use.
The demand to make concrete lighter has challenged scientists and engineers all over world. The challenge is to make lightweight concrete which decreases the concrete density while maintaining
strength and without adversely affecting the cost. A common way is to introduce an aggregate into the mix design to lower the concrete density. The familiar lightweight aggregates used in lightweight concrete productions are Pumice, Perlite, expanded Clay or Vermiculite, coal slag, sintered fly ash, rice husk, straw, sawdust, cork granules, wheat husk, oil palm shell, and coconut shell. The coconut shell when dried contains cellulose, lignin and ash in varying percentage.
The rapid urbanization and industrialization have increased the consumption of aggregates. So the researchers have to find the alternative for the coarse aggregate. The increase in population increases the industrial by-products, domestic wastes etc. In India coconut shell (CS) is an agricultural waste, which requires high dumping yards and also is environmental polluting agent. If this can be utilized as a coarse aggregate, then it should be a boom rather than ban for civil engineering society. As coconut shell is available at a low price in most of the tropical countries. The concrete obtained using coconut shell aggregates satisfy
the minimum requirements of lightweight concrete. Hence it is possible to made lightweight concrete making use of coconut shells as an aggregate in concrete. Coconut Shell
The coconut is one of the most useful plants in the world. Coconut is grown in 92countries in the world. Global production of coconut is 54 billion nuts from an area of 13
million hectares. South East Asia is regarded as the origin of coconut. The four major players India, Indonesia, Philippines and Sri Lanka contribute 78% of the world production. According to FAO statistics (Food and Agriculture Organization) 2007, global
production of coconuts was 61.5 MT with Indonesia, Philippines, India, Brazil and Sri Lanka as the major contributors to coconut production. The total world coconut area was estimated at approximately 12million hectares and around 93 % is found in the Asian and Pacific region. The average annual production of coconut was estimated to be 10 million metric tons of copra equivalents. Of the world production of coconut, more than 50 % is processed into copra. While a small portion is converted into desiccated coconut 5 and other edible kernel products, the rest is consumed as fresh nuts. Coconut shell concrete Limited research has been conducted on mechanical properties of concrete with coconut shells as aggregate
replacement. The concrete obtained using coconut shell
aggregates satisfies the minimum requirements of concrete. Concrete using coconut shell aggregates
resulted in acceptable strength required for structural concrete. Coconut shell may offer itself as a coarse
aggregate as well as a potential construction material in the field of construction industries and this would solve
the environmental problem of reducing the generation of solid wastes simultaneously. The coconut shell
cement composite is compatible and no pre-treatment is
required. Coconut shell concrete has better workability because of the smooth surface on one side of the shells.
The impact resistance of coconut shell concrete is high when compared with conventional concrete. Moisture
retaining and water absorbing capacity of coconut shell are more compared to conventional aggregate. The
amount of cement content may be more when coconut shell are used as an aggregate in the production of
concrete compared to conventional aggregate concrete.
The presence of sugar in the coconut shells as long as it is not in a free sugar form, will not affect the setting and
strength of concrete. Applications of coconut shell Light weight concrete
As construction materials in low-cost housing.
Used for the village road construction development in the developing countries.
Used in rural areas and places where coconut is abundant and may also be used where the conventional aggregates are costly. Used as structural lightweight concrete.
